Saving up numbers on mobile instead of a diary?

Earlier we used to have the system of jotting down telephone numbers on a diary; nowadays with caller ID facility available we save it on mobile telephones or our landline telephones. Recently, our land line telephone suddenly crashed and after struggling with it a bit, it got back to form; but lo! Its memory got erased Important telephone numbers are available elsewhere and so we did not have much problem. But as a rule, it is better to save up important numbers on a note book or some reliable back up system instead of just the phone. What are your views?

Kalaji I am very forgetful these days, might be due to my diabetes, hubby has noted the numbers in a diary of all our relative here as well as in Chattisgarh, so when i want to talk i use my land phone usually.

Oh Kalyani! I am also getting forgetful; I suppose nothing is wrong with that except that there is a bit of clutter in my mind as to different kinds of simultaneous work. Keeping a record is the best.

Dear Sister I have land phone since 1958 and cell phone since the day we had BSNL service. The first one i purchased was by Nokia from grey market for 6500 rupees, it became defective after 3 months. I always note down the number of contacts in a small note book. Now i have Nokia and Samsung wave with 2000 phone book. I have saved all there and grouped them too, as FAMILY, FRIENDS, CLOSE FRIENDS, DOCTORS, PAINTER-PLUMBER etc

there is always the danger of losing everything, especially if you just rely everything on your phone's memory without having back ups. i mean for our landline, it does not have such facility and no caller id as well. the thing is, we do not keep important numbers on phone alone and i sure have copied some important numbers in a notebook.

True; there is always this danger if we rely totally on technology.THe same is the case with our important documents in computer too.We do mail them to ourselves as a safeguard. Thanks for the participation.

Hi Kala! You are very right that back up for every data we feed in our mobile is very necessary, else we may find ourselves in soup. I have noted down the important numbers in a diary. Besides, I've an old mobile handset which I use for saving tele numbers etc. Means, important numbers remain on more than one mobile, therefore, if any mobile crashes, other one could be used to check the numbers.

I think it is a good idea to have both. Having the numbers in the phone is very convenient but it is also a very good idea to have a hard copy as well. That way if technology breaks down and the phone doesn't work then you still have the number in hard copy. Always good to have a back up.

That applies to so many other digital recordings kala. I have not updated my manual diary but it is indeed a good idea to do so. Look at the data we save on our computers. If we do not have a back up we are doomed should the computer crash. I had that experience once when I was new and I was experimenting with my computer. My hard disk went kaput and had to face the music. Nothing like our age old account books and diaries. What say?

True allknowing! We cannot take technology for granted.I must also do something about saved up documents. My husband always believes in account books and painstaking record keeping methods; I am lazy in this aspect.

There is only one way and that is to store your data by sending yourself an email and attach the details there. If you computer crashes atleast you have this in the so called cloud storage!! May be you could have it in a pen drive. Just some thoughts. But still nothing like a manual record.

Email is a way which I already resort to.In this new comp, I have still not whipped myself to storing data in a pendrive . Must never take it for granted, old or new.

I have a address book that i keep all address and phone numbers in. and i can carry it with me in my purse. so i have it at all times. sometimes the old fashioned way of doing things makes some sense.

Hi Kalav, i saved my numbers in both my mobile and also in my little phone book. We can't saved our important numbers only in the mobile. It will frustrated us a lot when those number accidentally got deleted. It ever happened to me before and i had loss contact with quite a few of my ex-colleagues due to it. Now, i always prefer to jot down any new number in my phone book as well after i had saved it in my mobile. It is always better to do the double job of saving up those phone numbers.

A back up is always a good idea..:) A digital back ...we can always take a print, and edit easily. Traditional telephone directories were difficult to correct, right? :)

Directories are another thing. THe numbers of our friends used to be stored in memory earlier on ; now as Sid has pointed out, we take the short cut. BTW,how is the driver [next door]?Just wrote a response there.

Dear Kalav My earlier handset had computer connectivity. So I had no problems and all the phone numbers were backed up and copied as an excel sheet. The current handset which I have since the past 4 years, doesnt have any computer connectivity. So I have a copy of all the phone numbers in the traditional diary/notebook thing. Technology in this case has made us lazy no doubt - just because of the ease of Caller Ids, we dont even try to remember the phone numbers. I still remember the olden days when we had those black (or green) phones for the landlines and we had to dial the numbers. That did allow many numbers to remain in our minds and many a times we did not even bother to look out for what the number was even though it was stored on the Diaries and elsewhere.

How right you are Sid! THe same thought crossed my mind too; we used to remember so many telephone numbers earlier but nowadays even important ones pop up at teh press of a button and we get lazy in the process. One of the ill effects of technology!

Hi aunty. I know it has been a long time since I logged into mylot. My parents are back, my son is a little grown up and finally am able to use mylot. I always have a backup, have all the mobile numbers stored in a book or diary in case my mobile let's me down. I guess it comes from being too careful most of the time. But it has helped me a number of times when I did not have acces to my mobile. It is something my father does, being meticulous, just like your husband.

Thanks for reminding me about it. Coz i have relied on my mobile phone on all important numbers that I have. And sometmes we should also check our mobile phones if the number we wanted to keep is in the phone memory or sim card itself. Coz I found out that some of my phonebook numbers were no longer in my list when I switched to another phone.

Hi I agree. Actually i dont save numbers in any diary . I just save them in mobile. But after reading your discussion i have decided to write all the important numbers in the diary. we never know we may even loose the mobile or the memory may get erased. Even after knowing this truth we somehow ignore it.

I use both.I have my mobile and a diary in which I write down all important phone numbers and addresses along with emails. At first I did not know how to save a particular number in my cellphone.Gradually I learned the skill from my son.I agree with you that saving phone numbers in cellphone is a good habit. You can save a particular number in your xellphone and later write it down on your diary.

The most important numbers I have in a notebook, on the computer and in my e-mails, too. But others, I just keep in the phone. The SIM card would always work, I hope. Also, it's far more practical. It can keep almost endless numbers of phone numbers, whereas the notebooks have a limit. Not to talk about that no affordable notebook is of a quality that it won't go wrong and rip to pieces if you use it day by day. My mom had a really sturdy looking one when she was young - now it's paper everywhere...
