Hi Galactic_gurl and welcome to my lot. I can't tell you what the core of a desktop is either. But I can tell you that it would be best to research what you want online. Unless you know a little bit about what kind you want. I had a gateway I had a hp never and a dell they are all good computers you got to decide on how much space you want on the hard drive what your going to use your computer for. You need to decide how much memory you want. Depending on how much stuff you put on your computer depends on how large the hard drive and how much memory you want on your computer. I use my computer to make stuff on like greeting cards business cards and calanders and crafty stuff like that. So I have a pretty large hard drive and 512 memory that is still a little slow for me but better then 128 or 256. I would love to have a couple of gigs to run my computer faster. Best advice I can give you is look online for the computer you want and find a store. I usually buy used ones when I can find them cause what ever is wrong with them I can usually fix. And if I can't fix them I can use them for parts to fix other computers. Good luck!

Your welcome Galactic_gurl. I have an Amd mother board it is a good one I don't know but think there are other kinds. Any time I can help you let me know. I have rebuilt a few and still got more to work on. I taught myself how to do what I do with a computer because I really enjoy it but I did it looking through the internet. When I got my first computer it was a desktop and I didn't even know how to turn it on. It was a brand new gateway. But I had trouble with it brand new I thank God I got a 3 year warranty when I brought it. After I had it 7 months the mother board went out took them about 6 months to come out and fix it. That is one of the reasons I started learning everything I could. I watched computer shows call for help and screen savers they have sites where you can ask questions and look up stuff. Good luck.

It's not that confusing as you think it is.Laptops and desktops are no different they both require processor aka CPU that has a core, hard disc,RAM,motherboard, etc.Remember the main component in computer is its CPU the more powerful the CPU the more smoother and faster your computer will run.So when ever you go to assemble your PC just buy a good processor I mean anything but Atom processor they are cheap and very, very slow.
When you go to the computer store look for monitor at least 20 inches LCD,then you need keyboard mouse get anything any colour you like, then here comes the component part buy dual core cpu with 3GHz speed or higher and at least 2GB of ddr3 RAM.Now buy mother board that supports dual core cpu and ddr3 RAM..Then get hard drive with at least 120 GB of space and DVD writer and tell them to connect all things(it's free of cost at most shops)and later they will ask you if you want to install programs such as windows and office suite(this service is not free of cost but also not that expensive) Let them install it if you don't know how to do it.See it's done this way you can get your desktop at a cheap price..
