if they cancel school

Today it's super cold out -8F last I looked and no my friends that's not even with the wind chill here. But I was thinking as my kids like others that school would be cancelled.... what do parents do when they cancel school and you have to work? I know some of you will say leave them at a relative of friend for the day. But if that isn't an option and you need to take the day off too are US employers required to allow you to take the day off w/o penalty (outside of loss of a days wages) ? I know people leave if school calls and says their child is sick which is along the same lines I would think. IDK how are things like this handled? I do ponder these things as I work on my resume in hopes of getting a job in fall when my kids are all in school.

A news item in England yesterday was covering the "Snow Day" weather and the effect it had on schools...some had closed due to facilities not being available,or due to transport difficulties in getting there..(One truck driver had apparently been snowbound with his rig for a couple of days until he can get moving again..)Another School had the Head being interviewed and it was all "business as usual for us.." as a sidebar it was noted that school performance "League Tables" could be affected by poor attendance,so it was erring on the side of caution whether to take a performance hit or close the School..! It would be tough for Parents too, having to deal with the fallout of a Snow Day,assuming they were able to get to work themselves!

I didn't realize schools were graded by attendance numbers as well. But I guess it would show either a problem within the school or the community if kids do no attend school.

hi 3snugglebunnies I have often wondered what parents do when they have to work abd get the notice that school is cancelled if they have no close relatives? perhaps a davcare center for kids or like one mom I remember took her kids to work with her which turned out badly . She did not lose her job but the kids drove the work crew crazy ande everyone had to baby sit them. Hope you get the jopb

That's true perhaps a daycare center would do on-call child care for such days but at a high price I'm sure. I haven't applied for anything my youngest won't start school til fall but I'm starting to ponder, plan, and work on my resume here and there now. I did find the perfect job for me this past fall but alas it was a year too early for me to apply and the way things are falling apart around here and such a full time job would be helpful or even a job with consistant hours. I like my current job but the hours fluxuate so much like my availability that with slow season right now I make enough to fill the tank up half way in both cars if I'm lucky a week. But what can I do if I don't have anyone who can get my son to and from school or be home with him in the afternoon and or what do I do about summer? How are they going to get transported to summer school if they go to a day camp sort of thing? Too many questions and not enough answers I guess.

this is a disaster. i know some people calling their supervisors and asking a day off so that they can fetch and attend to their children. usually, their supervisors allow the workers to do that. in case they don't, parents are calling their friends or relatives or neighbors whom they know are at home and will be willing to do the tasks of fetching and attending to their children.

I've never worked outside the house since my children have been in school so this has not been something that I've ever had to deal with. However, I do think that if I was working and school was to be cancelled as a result of the weather, I would call in and it wouldn't matter to me if there was a penalty or not. The reason that I would do this is because of the fact that my children are too young to be left at home alone and I don't have a backup babysitter.

If the kids is still young, some parents leave them to their relative, or nanny. But if their are already teenager, they can handle some task in home with less supervision. Just updating through call what is going own, if they are okay.
