Let's be frank people nowadays are aware that smoking is health hazard not only for the smoker but also for people around them (2nd hand smokers) smoking can cause lung cancer, emphysema and other diseases so why do they still continue to blow their cigars? Same thing with doing drugs its bad for your health (physically and mentally) and yet some people indulge in doing drugs.

I know what you mean. Nothing like having chidren to give you a good kick in the rear to assist in quitting. We had tried before, but that is what made it really serious. Also, what makes it all the more terrible everytime we have started back up.

There are a lot of reasons why people end up with these vices. I can't really judge them immediately because if you try to delve on their history, they are the ones who are going through tough times in their lives. These people have complicated issues. Other may not be able to understand it but some may.
Others see these vices as a way of coping up with pressure and stress. Say smoking for example, some smokers will say it makes them feel better if they smoke especially when they're under pressure. Peer-pressure is another reason why some people ended up with these bad vices. If you're someone who feels the need to belong and you end up with the wrong group of friends then there's a great possibility that you'd end up doing what you're friends are up to because you're scared no one will accept you if you don't follow what they're doing. Family issues can also be considered.
Yes, you are right. These vices are definitely not good for the health. It may also have bad effects (genetically) on your kids later on. However, we all have our ways of coping up with our problems in life. Maybe for those teenagers, I guess their parents should be more open to them and try to listen to their kids' view and perception on things. Open communication with your loved ones is a great factor to make these teenagers stay away from this bad lifestyle. If you come to think of it, most of them are hanging out with their friends more because they have no one to talk to in the house or no one is interested to listen to what these kids have to say.

There are lots of things that are not healthy. Yet we do it. Have you thought about people that eat too much or have bad eating habits? Isn`t violence worse than a physical disease, as it is a disease of the moind? Yet there are always wars going in the world, besides the violence at home and in the streets where we live. It seems that human beings have a lot to learn yet.

A lot of people see it as a way to enjoy their life. And many feel it frees them up from a lot of the problems that they face. It does cause a lot of health problems but many people don't care because it's not happening to them right now.
