I am about to go on a official tour for a month or two.Presently I am using a Sony vaio laptop (model -NW vgn-NW23NE). It is about 3 kg in weight. I am thinking of buying a new system to take with me on my trip. I want a light weight one only for using the net and doing my online work of writing in various sites. Please suggest what should I opt for-laptop or tablet? If possible also recommend brands, model and price(I am from India). Thanks in advance.

Go for a mini laptop, at least it'll have Windows, you'll be able to use the system as a computer even after the trip and using a Windows OS is much easier than using some other OS installed on a tablet. As far as brand is concerned, you can buy Compaq, it's better than Dell and IBM and cheaper than other HP laptops. If you can install OS by yourself, buy a laptop that doesn't have a pre-installed OS, this will save approximately 5000 rupee.

Yes, that'll be the best option. I bought my laptop 3 years back, I had got the best configuration then (4 GB RAM, dual core processor, 320 GB HD) at a very low cost. It was approximately 4000 cheaper and still a good one in market. Buying a computer with an OS should only be an option when you don't know how to install a fresh OS otherwise, it's waste of money, at least that's how I think, I may be wrong. I think you'll get such a mini laptop within 12K-14K.

Well, you can go in for a tablet itself, as most of the tablets nowadays have a "transformer" capability, wherein you can attach them with a detachable or foldable keyboard which either comes built-in within the body of the device or comes as a separate attachment which is sold separately. If you want to view your movies in it, you can take it in the tablet mode, or if you want to write in some sites, you can whip up the keyboard and use it in notebook mode. The Lenovo Yoga seemed pretty good to me in this regard.

Thank you so much for your response abhi. That seems quite a nice option and I can use it for my writing job.I use mobile net(GPRS)for net connection. Can I use GPRS in tablets for internet? Please let me know.

As for using GPRS, that is not an option available for all tablets. As for that, you will have to specifically ask the dealer whether the device is only wifi or accepts a sim card. If it's the latter, then you can go for a GPRS plan convenient for you.

As your priority is to carry a lighter gadget while travelling, and given that your major work with that would be just surfing and writing, tablet is the best option. But since you already have a laptop, it's better if you think about the utility of a tablet after you return from the trip!! Anyway, I think you can go for Micromax tablet available now at around Rs 5000, or Samsung Galaxy tab, Note and the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Grand at around Rs 21000.

Well I understand that you do prefer something light and if that is the only thing you are worried about then choose the tablet. But please remember it is more efficient to type on a laptop. But as far as I can see you already have a laptop so I don't see the sense of getting a lighter laptop to just go on a trip. So i recommend the tablet. Sorry if I cant recommend brands though because the only tablets I am interested in are Ipads. I don't think you would be so much interested in that.

In my opinion, it seems to be better for you to have a netbook with you for your tour. Why would I recommend netbook instead of tablet? There are several reasons. Let us start with the price. A netbook nowadays cost a lot cheaper than it was, it is also cheaper than most tablets. Next, a netbook has more functions compared to a tablet. And as you are doing work which requires you to write a lot, a netbook is easier for typing compared to tablet. Not to forget the weight of a netbook can be as light as one kilogram.

Thank you so much. I can now agree with you totally. So ultimately I bought a HP netbook. It's light and affordable for me. As regards writing comfort and others I also agree with you.

HI rolly! You could try Samsung tablet, which should be around 10K to 15k. Else, you could go for Glaxy Note II, which you could carry very conveniently and I hope you could use it for your on line work. It will cost around 36000/-. Alternatively, you could buy Micromax version of Glaxy Note II which will cost you around Rs.11000/- with same features as those of Samsung version.

Well,i would suggest you the laptop and not tablet. This is purely based on what you have written over here.Tablet is meant for browsing, but it would be slightly inconvenient for typing. There are few ones with USB but then it will be inconvenient in some ways.Tablet helps for quick browsing and its like smartphones. With Laptop, you can be multipurpose with things. There are lightweight laptops available.Since you are looking at lightweight and also support during travelling, i would go for Dell.Dell gives home business support across the world. They come to your home and fixes the things as long as you have the warantee or guarantee. With regards to the brands, model or price, i would suggest you to check indiaplaza, flipkart. These are based on your interests and your budget. And all these vary from person to person. But Dell should be good. But if you are looking at cost part, i think you need to check others ones like Toshiba or acer.Look for a laptop which works for long term.Hope you understand. Thanks!

well yeah tablet will do what want to do as you have mentioned in your post. A tablet is lightweight as compared to a laptop. I myself use a Samsung tablet and that is equivalent to a laptop. I hope that is going to help you a lot.

I had the same problem, and I have to say that it depends on what you're going to use it for. If you want to take notes at university or at work you should buy a laptop because it has a keyboard and it is easy to use. I think tablets aren't useful for working, but they are less heavy. For a laptop I would use ASUS and for a tablet I would choose windows surface.

dear friend, i have worked for more than 1 year in the field of tablet pc business. My suggestion for you is to buy one tablet pc 7 inch or 9.7 inch or the size as you want, as now the tablets are easy to bring and can also satisfy the demand of network, skype video chatting, phone call, etc, it will be very convenient for you to use, thanks.
