are libraries becoming extinct?

Do you think laptops and tablets will soon make libraries a thing of the past? Nowadays we can see a growing number of people carrying and using their laptops in doing research. Internet can be accessed anywhere as wifi is also available everywhere, even in buses and boats. In school students, especially college students, are already using the laptop in doing their school work which you can do anywhere. Thus, the library has become just a storage for books that are already gathering dust due to misuse. Real books are replaced by ebooks. Do you see that time when there will be no more libraries? What do you think?

There is no substitute to the feeling of holding a book in your hands and turning the page when reading. Sometimes my eyes feel bad about looking at rectangular screens most of the day and it needs paper in front of it, I don't think they should get extinct in any way. Books are a necessity, otherwise schools wouldn't be demanding students to buy them.

It is also one source of income for the schools as they also profit from book sales.

dear, from my point of view, i think many people still like books. Although online we can search for many books, the feeling to touch the boooks is also great for many people. Also long time facing to the screens make our eyes sore and hard to concentrate, with a book, you can really enjoy the content the books try to convey.

Whether we like it or not, it is a fact that libraries have seldom visitors nowadays because of the new gadgets like computers, laptops and tablets. It is getting a problem. What happens to kids who are just starting to read? Instead of books, I can see that what thye have is tablets. I still prefer books over ebooks. I think it is still better visiting the library too. I know there are still lots who go to library and I wish parents will still give books to their toddlers than gadgets..

I agree with you Blue. Kids should still hold real books to read, flip the pages etc.

I don't think libraries are gonna be replaced by this technology. For some, reading actual books is still the preferred version of studying, data/idea collecting etc. I myself read my novels and stuff in a paper book form, for me it's more convenient and easier for the eyes. Also, not every single book is digitalized, and that would take decades to digitalize every single book.

Right, Doro. Ebooks can never equal real books in terms of usefulness because the former is still very new and limited.

What I think is that libraries will never extinct because at least some people will definitely use them. But, as you said, the number of libraries has gone down to a very low level. Infact I have only seen libraries in an educational institutions only and no public library I have ever seen in my life and the reason for that is internet.

definitely not in the near future for sure because there is still a demand for paper books right now and also, most little kids don't have laptops or tablets (yet, anyways!) i read ebooks but i also like old books as i love history and some of the books i like to read are not in ebook format. i cannot see the library disappearing any time soon.

I do not think so. Though now there are many resources on the internet, people can almost get the information they want from their computers or laptop, there are still many people can not use these equipments. Some old people are used to paper information, it is hard for them to adjust to the electrical equipment. While to the one who can not afford the computers, they have to use the library to get the information.

I don't think that the libraries will disappear completely, but I have seen some changes. Many of the small libraries in my country disappear little by little, and I think that in the future only the big libraries are going to remain and people from the small towns will have to visit the libraries in the large cities. In the past there were several small libraries on my island, today there is only one library left (in the largest town) and the same thing happens in other parts of the country. I don't think that the big libraries are going to disappear as well. I visit the library very often and I always see many people who borrow real books.

I remember having one small library in our city, and even at that time nobody would go there to read. The books had gathered dust and eaten by termites. Books by Shakespeare, Milton, Plato, etc. were thrown away because of these dusts and mites.

I regularly go to the massive downtown library, and everytime I go, it is just packed with people, and there are a few good reasons. Reason #1, everything is free. You can get books, use the computers and go online, get movies, or use the space for whatever kind of work you want to do in a quiet environment, and it's all for free. If you want to get an e-book, or a laptop, or use the internet somewhere else, it's going to cost money, and if you're going to a restaurant or many coffee shops, it's going to be loud. It's way easier to do it at the library. And the biggest number of people going there are students, and they don't have the money to be getting food and coffee from the expensive places, and they want a place where they can be at peace while they work. Plus, it's all government money, it's something that taxes go towards to help out everyone, and loads of people have jobs through it. I don't think they're going anywhere soon... come something like 20 years from now, who knows? But I bet they'll be sticking around for a while.

No, I volunteer at as library and people are always coming in and getting books to read and movies too. People ask for books for school too, and I live in a small town and out library gets a lot of use, people come there to use the internet to reasearch too. But there will always be a need for hard copies of books no matter what new electronic device comes out that could "replace" books.

Sharper, in the future but today, there are still in use. You have to take into account that not all books are avail via the net. there are still books which are stored in libraries, sometimes special or customs ones to protect old books or some book paraphernalia which has a strong connection to history. Other books are not available to commercial or public use (e.g. the special edition books that other love to collect). Libraries will exist as long as the people need them.

I don't think so. At this modern time and age, people still go to the library. If not to borrow books, just to be there and do some reading and research while tapping away on their laptops. A library will always be a haven for researches, studies, reading. There are also those who doesn't have computers or access to the internet and they troop to the library to do their online stuff.

In my country, I don’t believe that libraries are on extinction because our local library caters to both tech savvy and the traditional book reader. This means that the library is equipped with devices that meet the new trend in reading such as putting up Wi-Fi enabled rooms, internet rooms, media rooms, and also the traditional book cases. So that students and readers would have a lot of options on which reading material would benefit them regardless if its paper or gadget.

The libraries might still be there - but their concept might have to change significantly. They're no longer providing just real books, but also scanned version of those books (e-books). In fact, there still lot of things that aren't available on internet but available on library. Time flies, things change. Libraries should makes some changes as well.

i think that there use of actual books will decrease not a full extinction of libraries, they have been there since the early stages of history and i firmly believe they will keep going as for the increase of tablets and technology to read i agree with you, I for one think there is nothing better than holding a solid good book. Did you hear about that library in Texas? they are making a library with no books, as in only eBooks, computers etc. i personally dont like this idea but, in this sense libraries will live on but the traditional library may lose more ground due to the technology generation.
