They took the whole Cherokee nation
Put us on this reservation
Took away our ways of life
The tomahawk and the bow and knife
Took away our native tongue
And taught their English to our young
And all the beads we made by hand
Are nowadays made in Japan
Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe
So proud to live, so proud to die
They took the whole Indian nation
Locked us on this reservation
Though I wear a shirt and tie
I'm still part redman deep inside
Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe
So proud to live, so proud to die
But maybe someday when they learn
Cherokee nation will return, will return,
will return, will return, will return
I love this tune. I was listening to it the other day and I wondered what if in some science fiction movie/reality the greys or whomever have taken over and they took all our technological toys away from us, all our name brand bags and shoes, even the American flag and everything that made us feel American and human. They then took our youngsters and taught them their language. Our corporations and companies all gone. What would we do? How would we exist? What is really important to us? What things do we really need to be who we are? Do we have enough on video and film to bring it all back if the time came that we could find technology again. Would we survive or are we weak? Would we overcome or meld ourselves into their way of life? Are we proud of who we are, the way we live? Do we care to keep it all together? Would we fight to have it all back again?

I remember this song.. Always have loved it. My stepdaughter is 1/8 Apache, I believe. She has all of the definitive physical features of her tribe, but we've been told her blood quantum is not enough to enroll her. I wish that her real mother were a bit more traditional so that my lilun could better learn about that part of her heritage firsthand.

It's Indian Reservation and by Paul Revere and the Raiders. I am part Cherokee. That is where my username came from. The Celtic is my Irish heritage and the Eagle is my Native American heritage.

yes i do. it came out about the time i was really into celebrating my native heritage. i can hear it in my head now. my kids and i and hubby at the time was living in a kind of camp down by a lake with a lot of our sioux friends. we would go to pow wows and i learned all kinds of sioux bead work which is some of the most beautiful art. i even learned some of their language altho i think some ive forgotten. my kids played with theirs, etc. we even had row cards issued because we had enough blood in us for that.

Great opportunity you had there. Those arts are dying out.
