I am unapologetic

Fair warning – this is almost a rant post.
I am just notified hours ago that my cousin’s dog is dead. The said dog was a playmate of my own dog and the one which was I was partly caring for before my current dog showed up at my doorstep. I am still friendly with that dog but I have to say that I didn’t have time anymore to do his walks lately because I am already busy with another one. That said, I have to say that I was quite frustrated on how my immediate family treated their dog, even when they knew that it has a illness.
I don’t wish to cross other people when it comes to how they treat their dog. It lies with the dog owner on how they should treat and care for their dogs. But it seems my immediate family just want dogs for the sake of having one to guard the house and play with. Granted that the dog was treated fairly well, but when it started to fell sick, nobody bothered to even check the condition of the dog or give it some treatment. As if they were just waiting for it to die or something. Like they already surrender the dog to its fate. If I don’t buy the medicine for the dog, nobody will. And I don’t usually do this (buying the dog medicine) because the dog’s care is under his owner and technically, not mine. Having dogs should also means taking care of them when they are sick because dogs are living beings and it utterly normal condition (heck, mine did have his own fair share). I just can’t wrap round this mentality.
When I was greeted by this news, I muttered under my breath with the owner of the dog present that it was the lack of care. They were plenty of time to treat the dog and everybody treats it like a trivial thing. When it gets serious, they leave it be like there is nothing they could do about it. Really sad because it is the dog who suffers the most in the situation. He made me repeat the statement and I did. I am unapologetic in that because I don’t skimp on my dog, especially his health. The dog might have been a local breed but it doesn’t mean it should be cared for by its supposed family.

Basically, if they weren't willing to take care of the dog, they shouldn't have the dog. You have nothing to be apologetic for.

Yes, usually because due to reasons being cute or adorable. A dog is much beyond appearances and services to humans.

I know how you mean and I feel the pain you are feeling. The dog should have been given to a vet for treatment. My family used to mock me kind of at times for taking my one cat who lived to be over 20 to the vet when he needed alot of care. He was a high maintenence kitty, meaning since he was an outdoor cat and his demeanor (he was a fighting type plus very curious...)To this day my mom will bring up the fact that we had to take him to the emergency vet one Sunday and cost her $300. for that trip when his mouth was bleeding and the other vet said not to take him there. She took his side and agreed, but the other vet most likely said it cause he wasn't getting the business or something. I paid for al of the other trips and stuff for my cats though, that was about the only time she contributed anything and I was grateful. Not like she hadn't contributed anything other times or vice versa. I paid them $2,000. for the bathroom to be redone for example and she was like you did? She forgets when I give her money so I don't always offer like that anymore.
Anyways I am with you that those people were careless in treating that poor animals, and it is sad. The last time I went to take my current cat to the vet there were two people there who either abandoned their cat (one lady actually said the cat wasn't hers and she has no money, after being told her bill would be $900. but they looked her up and found it was really her cat and she had brought it to another vet before them once before, so they said they would still bill her. I guess the cat would then be orphaned, sadly. UGH.) or the guy said he would leave the feral cat he brought in out in the street before he had to pay any other extra bills. The cat had a injury to his leg after he said he dropped him. The receptionist was trying to get him to have the cat fixed for $75. with the anesthesia he had to have anyways in order for them to look at the leg and she said it would a package deal so it was actually cheaper. Now if that cat would have a broken leg it would have cost more, which I hope to God he didn't.

Some people shouldn't have animals just like some shouldn't have children. There is a coldness in some humans that makes animal care or even child care a non-importance. It is very sad to hear that this animal had a less than good life due to lack of care and real love. Responsibility for an animal is important and it is so sad that some can't seem to find it within themselves to give it.

Part of owning a dog si responsibility and not all the liking and cuteness factor. Some people don't realize that but give up easily when they are faced with it.

I think you should suggest them to never get another dog. If they are not able to take good care of a dog, they better give up at the idea of being a dog owner.
A dog is not an object, a dog is a living being. Dogs have needs like people do. There are some bills that must be paid for a dog. And veterinary care is something that costs quite a lot in some countries. If they are not prepared for the vet bills, they better abandon the idea of owning a dog.

I hope they will realize their shortcomings but I cannot be sure if they will not take a dog in the future. I don't want to be the 'voice of doom' that remains them of their failures - I think they know my feelings about the issue. If they do take in one, I really hope that they take really good care of it. It just sad that two dogs have to die early because some human needs came first. And I have to agree, vet costs are soemtihng to be considered when one has a pet, dog or otherwise.

I live in the US and here it is a crime to neglect an animal. This is total neglect. I wonder if they would neglect their own kids? They should not be allowed to have an animal if they are going to totally neglect it.

In my country, you could have a dog (stray or not) as long as you take good care of it. Even if there is legislation,it's hardly enforced especially when it's a stray or a local bred. People tihnk that local breeds should be low-maintenance. Perhaps the mentality is that strays should be grateful that they even had a home but if you really love the dog, you care for it, no matter what. The dog I mentioned had a lot of care but when he fell sick, it seems to disappeared.

I find it quite brave of you for standing up for what you believe in. Usually when people face conflict, they say sorry tight away even if they don't mean it. And there is nothing more annoying than a fake apology, at least I think that. And dogs are beings with life, and they deserve to be treated as such.

I agree. I mane, whether you have a breed or not, dogs are really companions for life. they shoudl be treated with respect and as humans, we should come to their aid when they need it.

No matter the condition a dog should be taken care of. If you won't take care of it then you shouldn't have one. I live in Tennessee and the care they show their dogs down here is awful sometimes. Dogs and cats are just allowed to roam free and because of that I see them lying on the side of the road and it hurts even though I don't know the dog. Some people here treat their animals with care that it amazes me to see animals that aren't treated well.
I can remember I went to a yard sale with my family and this family had a beautiful husky female. She lost her one front leg and when I asked what happened I was appalled. They said that she got hit by a car while on vacation and they saved her leg. But then a few weeks later she got hit again and they had to take her leg. If she got hit once you should have been more careful with where she was going. The other thing that upset me was that she told me like it was just another event. Nothing major it just happened.

I guess the whole thing was an accident but I am glad they kept her around. Some people don't have the heart to take care of disabled dogs and just leave to shelters and otehr people to care for them.

Here, I am not sure where you are from, but here you can report them and be charged with neglect and abuse. I would never talk to them if I knew they treated there dog like this, and just let it die without giving it required medication. It is very irresponsible and yes it is the owners responsibility, sadly many don't see an animal as part of the family or even a living being. I hope they don;t get another dog, and I personally would never talk to them again knowing this.
