wiper blades up?

We are expecting snow tonight to turn into freezing rain tomorrow afternoon into the over night. And I was thinking on and off I've seen people who flip their wiper blades in the air during such events and possibly cover the blades with a plastic bag. Has anyone done this? Does it make things any easier than if you left them at rest on the windshield? I know it's a PITA to get frozen windshield blades thawed from the windshield itself during such weather. Just wondering if anyone has tried it and if it's worth a try so I will have one less battle when I get outside monday morning.

Hi Snuggles, I'm in New England so I don't even bother listening to the weather because it is just wrong so often. Beyond that, it is what I like about living here...the never knowing what it is going to be like outside day to day. I have never tried putting my wipers up but I guess it could maybe help. It makes sense that it would.

Yes we never know here either if stuff is going to truly hit us or not. They always say if you don't like the weather it'll change sometimes we get several seasons in a day... you just never know. As we have some light snow on the ground, it's going to go to freezing rain and in the next day or so it's going to get up into the 50's!

LOL sid you're totally right.i live in new england too. a friend of mine puts his up-he says it's not so much the snow, but the ice. if they freeze to your windshield, you might possibly damage the rubber piece prying them off.so,i guess it works for him..

I've never done that either, but we don't often have freezing rain here. It's more likely to start out as snow and stay that way. The only time I've seen blades frozen to the windshield is when I was driving in snow and the defroster was on. The window was warm enough to melt snow, but when I turned the car off, it froze the blades against it. I think it would make sense to flip the blades up away from the window. Not only are frozen blades hard to thaw, I would think that you could cause damage to them by trying to move them before they're completely thawed.

My get frozen a plenty with the snow and what have you in winter. Though they were almost damaged the other week as they were frozen and the wiper was turned on and no matter what I did I couldn't get it to turn off because the arm was still going by the commands of the programming and wanted to execute the movement though it couldn't with being frozen so you heard is this thump thump. I was quite worried the motor would get burned out.

I've never heard of it, but it makes sense, I guess, as long as no one comes along and puts them down again, or worse yet, snaps them off (if you're parked on the street).

I should have read this discussion yesterday. I got home from work just a bit ago after trying to scrap all the ice off my windshield. I did warm the car up though so it came off easily but I might give this a try!
