I have never owned a dog as a pet. I have always been a cat person, and my husband has birds, so those are the two pets we have had in our family. Lately my little boy has been saying that he'd really like to have a dog. I'm not ready to go there yet, but when he's a little bit bigger I think we will get a dog. Would you recommend basset hound for a small child? I was also thinking about a retired greyhound who used to race at the dog track. I have heard that they can be wonderful pets.

Absolutely, Bassets are the greatest breed I have ever owned. I have a Basset and a Lab. I have to say my Basset is much better with the kids just because she is much gentler. My lab is huge and hiper. I also love Greyhounds, I have never owned one but I have this love for them, I guess cause there's a lot of them that are abused.

The reason my mom got me a basset way back when was because she read that they're active and playful when you want to play with them, but they're also fine left on their own to sleep. And sleep they do when there isn't food around or you aren't playing. They're plenty energetic, though.
My basset is just great with my two-year-old nephew. They're a nicely mellow breed. He thinks she's a great toy because they're about the same height.
Bribery with food is the only way to train them, in my opinion.

I have been a Basset owner for the past 10 years. They are the best dogs. My Basset is named Maxine. I got her when I was 21. I am now 31 and she has been a big part of my life. Alot of people say they are lazy dogs but I disagree. My dog is 10 years old and she is extremely active.

Yes, I agree with you. I have heard this misconception about the breed. They are lazy and sleep all the time, not true. My girl is very active, she loves to play and run. She is only nine months old but still she is quite active. They are such wonderful dogs, she is just like one of my kids.

I became a basset hound owner about about a week ago, her name is Chloe. She's seven weeks old and just like a baby, I haven't gotten much sleep this past week. I have been trying to introduce her to the crate, so far so good. I'm used to the chewing, because we also have a beagle. She would chew everything when she was a puppy. Did it take a long time to house break your Basset? Or, I should say how long did it take to house break yours?

i have had basset hounds for 4 years. The smaller one is named Fred. He is red and 55lbs. He is the boss, and is mischevious and cheeky. The larger one is Max. He is a European, so he is a lot larger and weighs about 100lbs! He is so big and cuddly and has 11inch ears!

Yup! I have had and bred basset hounds on and off for 41 years and I LOVE them to bits! (Slobber and all.)
I rarely let a dog breed? But I have done that a few times..like 4 in 41 years! (They were espcially beautiful bassetts and it would ahve been a shame not to let them produce a litter! LOL!)
Once you have one..you fall in love! They are saggy and beautiful! I have a 2 year old right now..only as a pet. she had been abused and I brught her home and she is a sweetheart! (MANDY.)
They are great woith kids and families. I also have a black lab female and they love to play together. It is great!
I will ALWAYS have a bassset hound in the home!

hello, i'm from the philippines and i own a pair of basset hound breeders. they're actually nice and funny but not cuddly. do you want to own one? then i suggest that you research them in the internet. they're not easy to breed but very easy to take care of.

We have a 4 year old basset named Georgia. She's a sassy, stubborn, drooling, thieving sneak and we wouldn't have it any other way! :)
