It has happened to me a lot of times. Well, about the smiling part, I could smile back at a stranger but that depends on my "gut" feeling that time. Coz there are people who have just seen and yet you feel that the person is fine and you feel safe. Other times, I just turn away. As with the yawing, oh yes! Very contagious indeed!

I am always smiling at strangers. Saying hello, or good morning, or good evening. I enjoy smiling and making the other person smile back. Knowing in that moment, I was able to put a smile on someone's face. A simple smile is a powerful gesture

I would definitely smile back when someone smiles at me. Because it is only considered polite that way and it is the right thing to be done. So in a way smile is contagious but not to everyone because I have seen some people who do not smile at you for some reasons. By the way, I did notice that yawning is quite contagious too because when one person yawns, someone around the person would do the same too. There must be scientific explanation to this.
