Why criticize my dream for a collection of.....?

I have seen so many people who put their whole life into getting a card collection. And after years, those cards become priceless, sometimes one card can cost over a million dollars. But still it is just a card.
I have seen people who put their life to owning rare pennies.
So what is the problem when my dream is to own a car collection? I do have an idea why, it is when I tell them I want to become a neurosurgeon. Everybody just assumes it is all for the money to buy those cars. I bet if I had said I wanted a card collection, no one would have associate my goal career with such a hobby of collecting cards. What is so different with cars?
I have seen one baseball card cause over the same price as careera gt.
Have you ever heard of the young man who stole a baseball card and sold it for about 100 usd. He went to prison for many of years because he realized later that the one card was worth over one million dollars.
My goal career is neurosurgeon. I am a car enthusiast. I want a car collection and my car collection never had anything to do with me choosing my career. I have a passion for medicine.

Thanks. I do not think I would sell it though. They would just remain family car for the future generation. You know something that we could just send through, generations by generations. I promise to stick to my dream and make sure that I succeed.

I see what you are saying. That is why I always break up my dreams in smaller steps. It makes me see that I am progressing. I have mini goals that will lead to my ultimate too good to be true goal. There has been only 2 neeurosurgeons I think from Jamaica. So when people hear I want to become a neurosurgeon they are amaze. Some are just curious how will I manage to study for so many years. But I sat and thought about it. Where would you be when I am in school. If you are so eager to leave school when you start work, how would I feel to be in an unsatisfying job. I have seen so many people over 40 years old crying for jobs, and others dying to leave their horrible jobs. I do not mind waiting until age 35 or so to leave school, because I know after so long I will be happy in the end because I am doing something I really love. Just another 15 years to go.

I honestly think that if your career choice has nothing to do with your collection and the passion fro medicine is there then that is great! If that is your goal, and your dream then by all means go for it. Some people are always going to have their opinions, negativity, and jealousy even maybe. You know what path you want your life to go in, and your the one who has to live your life so do what you see fit my friend! That is the best advice I can give to you! Best of luck!

Thank you. I am trying to do just that. All my life I had tried to accomplish things to get me my career because that is my main goal now. A neurosurgeon is hard to become and I promised my self that it is just another challenge to surpass. I have studied hard and tried to stay on top of my game so I can reach that goal. I have gotten my first car. I will never sell it, it will be the first car of my collection. It is a very old and cheap car but that doesn't matter. A lot of people laugh after it because the car is so old but I love it just because I love cars on a whole. Well to be specific only manual transmission cars.

Their is no way that I could drive a manual, I can only drive automatics! I have a Dodge Caliber right now, but my dream is to get a truck! A Dodge Ram 1500 with crew cab so that my 2 girls won't be squished in the back seat!

Sometimes you sound so blond..lol
Anyway...there is nothing wrong with car collection but it does not really make sense. I mean, this is a class of asset that will increase in value over a period, right? And it is not a class of asset you can sell in pieces...like Rolls Royce Engine..or Ford Bonnet, or Chevy tyres..right? You need to sell it in its complete shape..in working condition. You need
a. Money to buy it..
b. Place to keep it
c. Professionals to maintain them (after sometime people forget the technology and you wont find many people able to repair it)
d. Ready market (this is impossible...how many rich people can afford it, and worse, how many of them would car enthusiasts...you limit your market indeed)
Unlike cars, cards are available in lower denominations, so people can invest in them. But you wont find right customer at the right time...you may need the monies, and being left with cars nobody wants as of now would be a sad state of affairs indeed...these cant even be mortgaged for loans and Christies and Shothebys wont give any value to them...so...certainly not an asset class that I would favor.

There is a guy in my town who builds cars including their parts...he custom makes cars...and has a collection of such cars...including one shaped like a shoe...kids love such things na..:)
You should make friends with him...I will try to get his name and address for you..then you can order the parts from him. He uses a lot of old vehicles..cannibalizes them.

Because you are not a car enthusiasts. The only way to me a car collection wont work is if you are planning to resell it or something. This is my valuable item. I WONT EVER RESELL IT IN ANY WAY. Now the only concern I have is parts relating to the old cars. Some might be hard to find but not impossible to find. I repair my own cars vandana, that is how I am. I will sit whole day or one hour a day for over a year until the car is ready. So I am not worried too much about professional garage men. I was grown in a society where you learn to do everything for yourself. I love cars, as long as they are of manual transmissions though. I do not like automatic car, old or new car it doesn't matter.

The object is his enjoyment, not the money. He could enter his cars in car shows if they are vintage or antique. My brother bought a Corvette just for the fun of having it. He entered it in car shows. He didn't drive it regularly but did take it out for a spin once in awhile. He finally sold it to a collector.

Your passion for cars has nothing to do with your passion with medicine. People just like different things. It's not hard to understand at all. Who are those people who criticize you, anyway? Maybe they are just envious of you.

Well a lot of people always just think I want to be a neurosurgeon for the money so I can buy a car collection. It isn't like that though. My favourite car is a Lamborghini though, but I know when I get older that can change. What I do know I wont ever change is I want a car collection. And what I am absolutely sure I would put out my best to achieve, is to become a neurosurgeon.

Honestly sometimes people are so skeptical and negative. I honestly wish you the best and hope your dreams come true, you simply enjoy cars, there is no big deal with that and the fact that you love medicine and your ideal career can help you to achieve you dream of owning a car collection is just a bonus of the job. It's your dream, you aren't hurting anyone and you have the right to have that drema nd fulfill it.

First of all welcome to mylot. I really hope you enjoy your stay, if you need help you can private message me.
I know people at times can be skeptical and negative, and it might just ruin your chances of reaching your goal if you listen to them. That is why sometimes I ignore people in that regards or just don't mention my goals. If I keep certain things to myself I am better off.

Interesting thoughts here, because even though my Dream Job and career is to have my own successful little shop where I would sell hand crafted (crocheted items), and sell Jerky. I am really hoping in time, this one could come true. Or even better yet, I was thinking about eventually getting a bigger spot for like a Crafters mall, and let people rent out spaces as well. I collect Bears, (mostly Beanie ones or Winnie The Pooh, Angels and Snowmen.) Does this have anything with my Dream job? Not sure, but these are what you will find around in my collection.

As you know the differences, all things are ok.
Here in many country, people love money so much. No matter what I want to do, they will think that how much money I can make from it. I love research so I choose the job as a college teachers, I think college is a good place for doing research work. I just want to do something i love and I can focus on. While people here thinks I am trying to have patents which I can use to make money.

I guess everybody nowadays just want to relate everything to money. There is nothing such as a hobby any more. If the hobby isn't making you money then people thing it is just not worth wasting the time. I want to be a neurosurgeon, I want to collect cars and I have always wanted to make a go-kart from scratch with my child in the future. That is if I even have a child. I really hope I have one though.

You remembered that? I have been on this site for a while now then. I will make sure to reach the position of a neurosurgeon. I don't want to let any one down either. You just have to try your best to hold on for about 15 more years. I planned out what I am going to do to reach it, and try to find plans to pass any problems in the way such as financial problems. I have talked to many people and counsellors, so as to know what exactly to do. By the end of march I will know what next to do towards my goal. But at the moment all I am doing is just killing time so I can hear how I am set for that goal. Just a couple days really, a little less than 60 days.

Yeah it can be annoying when others have the wrong impression of us or have the way we feel mixed up. But really it doesn't matter. Your career will be your career and whatever career you choose it would need to be something to collect all the cars you wanted. You have a passion for helping others and learning how to do that, this is a great thing. We all have goals, passions, and things we may want to collect, but in reality we may need to have more income to do that.

Go for it. Don't worry what others think. One thing has nothing to do with the other. I will be happy when I get one car. I can use a car here, but it's not mine. My brother used to have a Corvette. It wasn't for driving. He just wanted it for car shows. He loves going to car shows. I am a retired nurse. I always wanted to be a veterinarian, but I was always discouraged by family. If I could do a do-over I would either become a family doctor or a vet. I regret that I never realized my dream. Don't let anyone stand in your way.
