What is the barometer for a Politician to be re-elected?

Some Politicians are re-elected for several times on their District even if their performance are at the bottom meaning their districts remains as one of the poorest in the Republic, countrywide development funds hard to account, poor implementation of local projects, rampant illegal loggings, drugs, gambling's, peace and order is very poor and the standard of living of the constituents is at medieval period. The opposing candidates came from a degnified family workaholic and peace loving individual but after the Election, his number of votes garnered is at the bottom not even a half of his opponent. Some are already ex-convict as against a clean politicians, but amazing the fight for a Post on an elected position is still neck to neck. In your opinion what will be your barometer in electing Elected Officials.

They way I see it, as cynical as I am, there's only three reasons a politician is elected in any circumstance. Popularity, promises and putdowns.
You can lie, cheat and steal, but as long as you promise to give someone something, you'll probably have a leg up on the person promising less. You can be an outright divisive, dirty SOB, but as long as you're willing to blame everything on an enemy, someone's always going to buy it. And you can do whatever the hell you want as long you're Joe Cool and have media and the masses fawning over you.
You don't have to be a good person to be a politician. You just have to appeal to someone while convincing them that the the other party on the ticket is a worse choice.
You're set for life if you sell your soul.
If politics were a private business, I'm willing to bet that 95% of all politicians at every level would be fired for ethical violations, poor production, or just being too inept to fill the position.

This is very comprehensive and these are realities , 200% very very true ! So sad but it is true , you don't have to be righteous to be chosen in your community . All you need are plenty of money , connections and confidence then that it ! Moral aspect , intellectual aspect is not a thing to be considered for one to be a politician.
This is how dirty our politics and we kept on shouting why so many poor people , why so many are starving , why heinous crimes goes up when the blame is in us . They are there to do all personal interest and not really to serve hence good services would never reach to the taxpayer and to the most needy.

I agree to both of you. Wolves in sheep's clothing are many in politics. Will they want to serve the people? of course not they want to corrupt the money and put themselves in pedestal and to enjoy power and social prestige. Few of them are dedicated.

Thank you very much what a nice discussion and very enticing. Sometimes i described a politician to be a good actor and the people are unmindful of what is really happening of her surroundings what is important to them are their survival at the moment, nearsighted, less conscious of what will happened in the future. The problem is they will only realized their mistake is when they will be a part of the sufferings caused by the misdemeanor of the person they voted. I think the main factor is the cost of living as compared to the economic status of the people. The eagerness to survive with the hope to be a part of the popularity of the Politician she voted for her to earn more with minimal labor.

Firstly, the elected representative out to have an agile body, so that he can move about swiftly at people's beck and call. He must be trusted by one and by all. He must have a sense of justice and fair play. He must be forever ready to help anyone who comes his way, without caring what he gets in return.

I think there should be term limits on politician's reign! THese guys have been on the hill for 30 plus years, they haven't a single clue about how the average american lives and what is needed to live and be a citizen and how the laws they make up and vote on effect the regular person. Not a single one of them could live in the "common world" after being on the hill for so long. Yet there they are..telling us how we will live and making rules/laws for us to follow, when most of the time, the rule/law doesn't even apply to them or their lives. I guarentee you those like Diane Finestein, Barbara Boxer and others of extremely long term political life on the hill, couldn't last 6 months out here in the "real" world. And actual JOB with specific rules to follow and low pay and high taxes and crappy health insurance...and no business expense report.
I think most are "re-elected" simply cause people just don't vote. Or they just mark for D or R...simply cause that is what they are so they vote the party, not the person.
I think they should have term limits...4 years... then they can be re-elected for 4 more but after that, they can't run for re=election until 4 years later...let them live the laws/rules they themselves made and see how they like it. IF they want to run again, fine, but they should at least know the results of what they are creating and implementing. These long term 30 plus politicians are just a joke these days. They make laws that don't effect or include themselves. But I guess it is the people's fault. People dont' pay any attention to politics...granted it is mainly cause it is so complicated and misleading and all, but still... at least find out how long someone has been making life so complicated and vote them out and try someone new!

In my country, an elected official can serve for three terms only and he has to be replaced. However, my country also has another politician tradition - political dynasty. This means that the position is clear but any relatives of the former occupant can run for the position. That includes wives, sons, sisters, brothers, daughters, in-laws and so forth. Even the mistress. There are even times when two political dynasties clash together.

What a wonderful views to hear from both of you and thanks for the knowledged you shared, one is the term of office in your country. Well, for me I think the problems in my country is the auditing of our Politician's expenses. In our country we have a very poor cash control. We are also very lenient in counter checking the spending of the Politician as compared to what is allowed. This is one reason why many Politicians run for a Government Office. They want power for them to acquire more money and become rich than to serve thier constituents. It is also the reason why Politician kill the opponent thru hired killers to assure success. Because of poor cash control most of the voters don't really know what is happenning and for that, our people usually vote for a popular candidate.

In the US, many election districts are designed to favor one party's candidate over another. It's a common occurrence after the census is done to re-draw the districts and the party that's won the election for a state gets design districts to favor their candidates. Unless a new candidate from the same party comes in to challenge an existing candidate, the office holder usually keeps his position.

Wow, nice within before election there is already unity. Anyway the system in the US election is already tested for century and people are much mature when it comes to Politics. Reason maybe why they are at the top. In my country,..no, it is not that way. One reason I consider is economic and the standard of living. People who knew much and want to excel in a short span of time, is to used the ignorant of another.
