Not everything is good about cellphones

I dread the thought of our maids owning cellphones. Without the cellphone they are not ready to work anywhere. It is quite unnerving when they talk for hours late into the night. They can plot anything through the use of cellphones. What would be your worst fear of cellphones. How damaging are they?

Can you dock the maids' pay, or do you have a contract with them? Do the cell-phones cause them to FAIL to hold up their end of the contract?

There is nothing in writing but cellphones play havoc in that their work gets neglected and there is also the safety angle since it is possible that they could pass on secrets.

We need to handle this category with kid gloves. One harsh word and out they go!

Then why can't you just tell them you're docking their pay (paying them less) for every time you catch them using the phone without permission?

Being a maid is just like any other job... If you go to your job, you just don't randomly starting talking on your cell phone for hours, do you? I'm pretty sure your work place has some rules against that... Maid is a job... Why would you allow them to talk on their cell phone for hours on end when it has nothing to do with their work? Set some guide lines... Do some back ground check before hiring them... Having a cell phone is like anything else... Maid has an access to kitchen utensils, right? How weird does that sound if I were to tell you that I'm really concerned about my maid coming after me with a kitchen knife? Leaving a gas stove on & blowing my house up? My point is, if you're gonna worry about a maid doing something wrong, it's not limited to plotting to rob your house by using a cell phone... I do believe prevention is the key...

No. they don't talk for hours during working hours but getting calls at times they need to concentrate is not called for. They are not much educated and for them this recent possession is like a toy and no matter how vigilant one is it cannot be kept in check. Those who are used to keeping maids sometimes have to tolerate this which is a new development but an irritant all the same and it is risky as they can pass on information. Being careless in areas as you have put it is not something that happens on a daily basis and not all maids are that careless. As for them coming after with a knife it is as risky for the maid as it is for the employers!

That is also one of my concerns as well as my sister in law's concern. The maids now have their own cellphones. And taking it away from them is not possible since they would say that it is their connection to their homes. FINE! But even if you have told them that there are only certain times during the day that they are allowed to use it, still they cling on that phone 24/7. I once saw my sister in law's maid ironing clothes. If I were to do it, i think an hour would be enough. But this maid took more than 3 hours! Why? because for every shirt she irons, she makes a call or sends text messages.
Also there was an incident that a new maid arrived in the morning. I have noticed that she was holding her cellphone the whole time my sister in law was telling her the do's and don'ts. So what I did was, I told that maid the her cellphone should be kept away and only during after lunch and when she is about to go to sleep at night will she be allowed to use it. You know what happened next? She cried and said that she can't work if she would not be working with another helper in the house! Grrrr! If I was just a wicked witch, could have turned her into a frog that instant!

There should be a restriction when it comes to using cellphones. It's a distraction and at the same time the maids can be unproductive. There should be a specific time of the day when they can use it. And there should be time when they are restricted to use it. It's also discipline that you are going to teach them. :)

It is difficult to get maids these days. With restrictions it will make it worse. We have to live with it hoping all will be well. But it is not like the good old days any more when they had no contact with any one excepting when they used our home phone which we have always allowed.

Hello allknowing
Your concern about maids is genuine. The abuse of cellphones are upsetting the society. This very problem has started in the most households. Recently in a house of our area, a gang of miscreants has robbed of valuable belongings with the help of maid. I like to say more that effect of the cellphone on the students is negative. It is damaging their spirit of studies. They prefer to gossip with their dear one for hours. Sometimes cellphone is used as a great weapon of black mail by taking the unwanted pictures of someone.

But the powers that be will only wait for major disasters to happen in order to look at this gigantic problem. I have my cellphone which is basic with no added features. I use it only when needed but it is not so with most. You have brought up other issues that are serious. There is yet another annoying thing that happens with these cellphones. When we have visitors they will have their cellphones on and invariably there will be countless calls. I get the urge to tell the guests to leave! Grrrrrr.....
