it might help to re-install although it's also possible that if your pc is updating (windows for example) etc it's not able to read it anymore. I had that with mine so in the end I bought an extern one wich I also can connect to my laptop. To be honest I never use it anymore, nor the dvd player in my laptop.

you need a perfect or a exact driver to use in your hardware, dont use other installer.

thanks WakeUpKitty,
i also tried to update the driver manually but i received the following message "the wizard couldn't find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed"

yes try re-installing it. some reasons why is the hardware function unproperly is because its because maybe its software is being damge. If it resolve your problem inserting a cd cleaner to perform a good reading.

there is a cleaning cd for dvd's, or in cd rom. You can buy it in the mall. All you have to do is rent a computer in the computer shop then insert the installation cd. Copy it to your usb then install it to the computer.

Hi,
You don't need an installer for a CD-ROM drive for it is a plug and play device. The operating system automatically installs the driver right from the BIOS system so if it can' read anymore, there's a good chance that its laser eye may have been blinded or damaged altogether. I have some of it here on the shelf quite useless, even dismantling and cleaning the lens won't do any good. It is easy to dismantle the casing but no matter how hard I try, there's no way to revive a blinded optical drive short of changing the laser eye.

you have right, the operating system automatically installed the device, this is what happened.but still the cd-rom isn't reading any cd.i think that is a problem with the laser eye like you said.

So I think its time that you find a new one or try to remove your CD rom player and go to repair shop or just call your nearby computer tehci shop

It is giving problem because of being old item.
Instantly you have to change a new one for your better reading of cd's.
If you or your neighbor having similar system to you, you can insert your drive into another system to check out it's functionality.
Otherwise you would have to take it to any nearby repair shop.
It may be a damage of laser lens in that device.
Check it out for inner belt for cd rotating.
If you have any screw set to open the drive, you can open it and clean the lense using a clean stuff.
In other way you can use cd cleaning solution along with a certain cd's that are having slight and smooth bristles to clean lenses.

My first suggestion would be to clean the drive to ensure that the problem is not simply accumulated dirt blocking the laser. Cleaning disks are readily available and should be used frequently, depending on how much use the drive actually gets. All CD or DVD drives will struggle to read the disk if they are not kept clean.
If cleaning the drive does not work, then the problem is likely that the drive is not working anymore, which does happen in time. Usually the laser is the first to cease working. In this case you need to replace the drive.

they tend to do that after awhile.the laser malfunctions.
same with tv dvd players.
i'm surprised yours lasted that long.but i do use mine a lot.
all you should have to do is remove and replace the unit.the computer will recognize it.
