I don't really read dictionaries but yes I do refer to them in case I want to know the meaning of a word. I generally use 2-3 different dictionaries. Some have detailed explanation about words, others have good thesaurus, so I refer to all the ones I have.

Hi,I like to read the explanation of the meaning of a word, and this helps me improve my knowledge of English.Thesaurus actually gives the words that are nearest to the meaning of a given word.It does not have explanation of the word.Explanation helps us to understand minute differences in the meaning of synonyms.

Of course, it's a great way to remember special words and to learn many new ones. I've bought recently a dictionary (Czech-German).During my childhood, I spoke both languages but with the time I lost big part of the first one. So I try to recover it reading the dictionary and online and I am also near to buy some books written in that language, because I don't want to loose it.

Of course. Even if we think we already know the one or the other word, if we take a dictionary to read about that word, we always learn another meaning or its origin.

I am from India and my mother tongue is Hindi.I love reading both Hindi and English dictionaries in which the meaning and usages of words are properly explained in detail. If you read such a dictionary,I am sure you'll find it extremely interesting.Do try once,if possible.

Yes,if we make it a habit to learn new words and start using them in sentences, our vocabulary gets improved. If you have any dictionary having the detail explanation of the meanings of words, you will come to know minute differences between a word and its synonym.Learning these differences is a pleasant experience.

I read my dictionary some time, but most often I check the dictionary when I come across new words. I had a friend who had a pocket dictionary and sometime all you find him doing is reading it. Well, it is good, but I don't read it as I do my Textbooks and School Note.

I know there are many here, including me who would never think about reading something like a Dictionary probably but it is interesting when you look up a word to see what it means, you can learn a lot about it. Maybe even find new meanings and thoughts you would have never considered, and I am sure many writers have done this and it becomes something they end up wanting to write about.

You have rightly dubbed reading dictionaries 'adventure of language.'It is nice to know that you know a lot of words and like to read famous people. That's a very good habit.I too read about wild life, politics, history, religion and adventures, but often I prefer to read dictionaries that take me to the world of words that is really so wonderful. If possible, try it just for a change.

No I don't read the dictionary I find it to be a bit on the boring side. The only time I read it is when I need to know what a word means.

It's your choice. You feel bored.I love it.I love words. It is the words that convey our thoughts and feelings to others. For me it's very pleasing to know how words are used to express our thoughts. If I have been able to improve my knowledge of Hindi and English, the credit goes to my habit of reading dictionaries.

Oh I used to read the dictionary too but now I'm using it just when I need to find a meaning for a certain word. My mother's language is Indonesian (now we call it Bahasa Indonesia, even in English). I still like reading the dictionary when I have time and still feel amazed by the words that I'm never familiar with in daily life.

If you like it,you can redevelope the habit of reading dictionaries.I don't mean, you should read English dictionary only. You may as well read a dictionary of Bhasa Indonasia.I read both Hindi and English dictionaries.Reading dictionaries shows to us how words are used to give vent to some particular feelings.A dictionary is the world of words. And this world is so exciting.

That's exactly what I want to say.Dictionaries take us to the wonderful world of words and we learn how we can express ourselves by using different words. And I am sure, kokomo, you will agree with me if I say that words are one of the greatest inventions of human race.We learn a lot from them.I had adopted the habit of reading dictionaries years ago and now it has become a part of my daily routine. If now I can write and speak Hindi impressively and my knowledge of English is improved, the credit goes to my habit of reading dictionaries.I fully agree with you.

Yes,technology has made it easy.My son has installed the application to his smartphone and it helps me a lot. However all the words are not in it.Sometimes I have to consult the bulky, offline dictionary I had bought in a book fare at throwaway prics. It's a Collins Coubild dictionary.

That's exactly what I do while writing articles for online article writing sites. My mother tongue is Hindi and before using any word to give vent to my feelings,I have to know its definition and usage. But even when I am not writing articles,I read dictionaries only for entertainment.I have found the world of words extremely amazing.
Thanks a lot for your encouragement.

Hi,
My mother tongue is Marathi. I use English into Marathi dictionary and Marathi into English dictionary when I want to find the meaning of some hard words. Marathi into English dictionary is useful when I can't find any English word for some Marathi word. But I never used dictionary as reading like story book with interest. But I would like to try it as you said.
