So how confident are you?
For me i have been learning, studying the language for more than 25 years as English is our second language here in my country and its the basic form of instruction in our school. If i will have to rate myself, in the range of 1-10 i give myself an 8. That is for writing and verbal speaking, i am pretty good with English spelling and i am comfortable using the language in my line of work and can communicate well with others using it.
As for being a writer, no i sucked at this. I mean, i have been wanting to be a writer, or illusioned to be somehow(sigh!). Been reading self-help books on how to improve on my writing skills but for now i can only come up with diary entries(somewhat similar to that) and it is so plain English(no style at all!) and very self-centered.
What about you? any suggestions you can partake?

Hello
Well, when I joined mylot, I wasn't good at English, but after spending lots of time here I guess I have improved. After joining mylot I have also started writing articles on my blog and on few other sites. So I feel that my writing in English is improving. But I can't say same about my speech. As here people don't use English for speaking, I really don't have any habit for it. So I am still not that good with Speaking English.

I am also confident with my English skills. My accent is fine I rate myself 9/10, But my spelling is not so perfect so I rate myself 7/10 in spelling and in writing I think I get 8/10. My accent is what I am very confident about. I love speaking in English if it's necessary.

accent is very useful when you want to work in call center companies, i used to train with Excel asia just to enhance my accent and the t and th sound which is not really present in our Filipino language and it takes practice and use to acquire accents...good for you.

in writing, yup that would be a no confidence for me - when we talk about literature and novel kind of quality writings. but of course when it comes to documentation and technical relating to my job - i am pretty confident with what my output is and i know it is very easy to be understood by my users and customers or clients.
When it comes to speaking the language, i can say i am very adept at speaking it, i am conversant and i can talk in english with our clients in meetings and see no problem explaining and expressing myself when it comes to the language. some issues would just arise if i need to explain in technical and i could not find best or the most suitable description.
when you do want to be well versed, you have got to be a reader - when youu read a lot of english books, you get to pick up the words, and you will also be learning and widening your vocabulary.

it is good that you are confident in both written and verbal, i used to love to reading when i was younger but then somehow stopped because of change priorities like the kids, the house, and now the work that i have...for me reading a book is a luxury and i have been missing that a lot.

I have been learning English since i am born. So this is my second mother tongue. I can speak, write well. It is very rare where i stammer these days. That is because i hardly interact with anyone now days as staying at home. I don't talk to anyone and just type type and type. I have both the accent skills English(US) and English(UK) i think i don't find any problem with it. I also love other languages i know very little German and Portuguese(Brazil i am still learning them, i am going to complete my German. I love learning different languages. Well i think i would scale myself as 8.5/10. I am also very well in my Native languages.

Confident enough to express myself. I don't see the need to rate myself. To whom I should compare myself if I would do so? There are Always people who are way better speaking/writing/expressing themselves in English as I can/am/wil be able too. Which is the same with you.

Well, lucky for me, English is my native language so it is the main language I speak and almost the only one I can read and understand. I know a lot of people who come here to the US and can speak great english and read and understand it, and others that struggle. If you are not used to it, it would be harder to use. Send me to some of the foreign countries and make me learn your language and I would struggle as well.

hi andak,
I can relate with you. Sometimes I can speak English continuously but there are times that I am bothered whenever someone interrupt me and I become very conscious with my grammar. I find it hard to look for ideas too whenever I want to put my hands on writing. Just like you, I hope I can find a solution for this one. As of now, I still continue practicing my English as I know there is more to learn on this language.

yeah, even my country English is the second language.Even though I had my schooling and graduation all in an English medium school but I have to say that I am still not comfortable with English. I have tried so many things to improve my English, but no use. I started reading English newspaper also and also English is mainly used for communication where I work. And finally I am here with a mind set to improve my English vocab and all.

I think you just need to read other books as well. Read books written by different writers. Each writer has his own way of expressing himself. And make it a habit to jot down unfamiliar words and look for its meaning in the dictionary. Making use of this uncommon words can make your work look fancy.

I think I can rate myself like you. When I write for others, i usually do it two forms of style - formal and technical or conversational. If you want to publish, you have to very adept. I can't say how much plain or self0centered your style is. But usually, people (even businesses prefer plain English. My one employer once thought that I was schooled in etiquette school because of my use of word choice. But at least, I'm flexible. But it depends on what kind of materials that people want to read. The question is - what kind of writer do you want to be?

I am also willing to improve my English and I find MyLot as a platform that lets us earn while learning different things including English as well. I am sure I would be able to write good one day soon like others. I am not sure if I would do it as good as natives do but as they say 'some thing is better than nothing'

I have learned English for 12+ years, but I still feel my ability not equal to my ambition, and when I want to express something in very accurate and proper English words, I often feel powerless/helpless. That's frustrating. But as for formal English writing, that's fine. If you need help, I can Email you my Advanced English Writing materials. Try to contact Sarahliuliwen@gmail.com if you like:)

Hi andak2007, my mother tongue is Marathi, spoken in the state of Maharashtra, India. I have been learning English since 40 years when I was first introduced to this language in Pre-school. Even after so many years, I am not sure whether I can consider myself well-conversant with the language. This is probably because it is not my mother tongue. I think it is very difficult to gain same confidence in other languages as your mother tongue.
