Litter Box Disaster Area!

My daughter's kitten is wonderful about going to her litterbox- never an accident. However, she is destructive as all get out in there! I swear there must be a six foot area around her box of litter she's tracked out, spilled out, kicked out.... Don't know what I need to do to prevent that. I can't afford a covered box or mat right now, so anything I do has to be DIY-style.

Get a cardboard carton which is somewhat bigger than the litter tray and gives the kitten some head room. Cut a hole in the side so that she can get in and out and place the litter tray inside. She won't mind that it's dark inside and, in fact, cats actually LIKE privacy when they are using the litter tray.

i'm convinced you could put 1 inch of litter in a bathtub, and they'd still manage to fling it. i know my 6 make a huge mess.compounded by one who sits on the edge of the catbox and occasionally showers himself. i have an old yoga mat under ours.it doesn't stop it,but it does cut it down quite a bit.
