I don't know about other countries but here in the USA today is groundhog day. There is one groundhog in Pennsylvania and one in MA that I know of. The story is if they come out of their den and see their shadow we will have 6 more weeks of winter. If they don't see their shadow then spring is very close. In PA they make a huge party where Pete their groundhog is. I don't think MA is making such a big thing about it but they are monitoring her. Do you have groundhog day where you live? If you do do you believe in the groundhog and what it means?

Hi ctryhnny, The groundhog story is just a bit of fun for everyone and is never meant to be taken seriously. I don't suppose anyone ever does. Anyway we do have a groundhog here in Canada and I believe it's been reported that he saw his shadow. I guess that means another six weeks of winter lol! Blessings.

We don't celebrate it here in the UK, but in my diary I knew about it, it says Groundhog day and in brackets USA and Canada so I guess only these two countries celebrate it, I watched the film Groundhog Day and I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was comical too. Imagine having to relive the same day over and over and over again! Like you were stuck in a time loop.

It's just a fun thing. As the other responder said, it is not meant for anyone to take seriously.
Punxsutawney has managed to turn it into a nice boost for tourism to that little town. I've been through there before, and there really isn't much to draw one there except for the Groundhog Day festivities.

The people in PA take it very seriously! They get dressed in turn of the century (I think) clothes and all stand around the cage he is in. At a certain time they take him out of the cage and make a big deal out of him. I think your right about it being good for tourism since there are a lot of people who go to the 'event'.

I don't know what that means. It's like some indication? That would be funny.

Personally I have always wondered about this really. I think anymore, it really depends on where you live, and how Global warming is effecting the area. Here in WA state they talk about something called Ground Frog day, and even do some activities and celebrations on Feb 2nd for that. So what the big deal about all this is, I have never really understood.
