Is this drinking?

I saw a short comment on TV in which a reforming alcoholic who has not drunk in 24 years asked whether his acceptance of Communion wine is compromising his sobriety. If the wine becomes the Blood of Christ then presumably he's OK. But if it only represents the Blood then is he on thin ice?
