Manila, the only elephant in the philippines which stays in manila zoo, has been granted the permission to leave to transfer to the elephant sanctuary in thailand. i'm thinking Mali is already 38 years old and the life expectancy of that certain kind of elephant is 42 years which means he still has 4 years to live. do you think it will be good for the elephant to transfer in thailand? i mean he's been domesticated for years here and if he will be brought to the forest, do you think he can survive? will the other elephants be accommodating to accept him to their group?

I think Mali should spend the rest of his short remaining life in Thailand... it is the best place for him... with other elephants in the forest... he would not be living in the wild because it is a sanctuary where food is provided for them... they have have people who will take care of them... Manila Zoo is not really the best place for an Elephant because the space provided for him is so small... I have been to a sanctuary in Kota Kinabalu... and the Elephants there are well taken cared of... Thailand is a country that values Elephants... it is a country where they are considered as sacred... so i think Mali is better off there...

i also heard that elephants are well taken care of in thailand. but my worry is won't mali be an outcast since he's already old and the elephants there would have been friends all their lives?

i think its a bad decision to bring mali back to thaland.at his old age it is dangerous for him to travel and might even risk his life for that.

true.and instead of transporting mali to thailand why not pamper him with what he needs.im sure the transfer would cost so much.why not use the money for funding the zoo.

that's a good idea. i think they will be able to save the money for other purposes.

that's actually my worry. with this transfer, it may actually be for the bad and not for the good. i just wish that those who suggested it have actually consulted knowledgeable people before doing such.

So sad to see him go since he has indeed survived living here for a long time. But I guess it is a good effort to have him to his own kind and maybe feel some comfort being with his own kind in his last few years of his life. I know they will know how to approach this when he is introduced with other elephants and hopefully they would be accommodating since he is an elephant after all. I do not know if there are other elephants around here in the Philippine Zoos anymore.

From what I read from Bangkok Post it was even approved by our Philippine Legislative for it to be taken out of the country. And from what I know this elephant was a Sri Lankan Elephant gift from Sri Lankan Government to the late Ferdinand Marcos. I did not know that trivia until I read this news post from Bangkok news. http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/333763/philippines-parliament-votes-on-elephant

Naturally its the best way for him, let him go to nature, I am sure he can adapt to the changes.. Even he is old, i'm sure his instincts will surely dominate and we will be a good addition to the group of elephants..

I watch the news last night, and now I fully understand the situation. I guess you are right, its much better for him to just stay here in the country rather than to be fly abroad, we don't really know what will happen to him in such a long way flight. From what I have seen, the elephant is doing well and there is nothing to worry about his health.

that's really my concern. the travel will be stressful for him and the new environment would be really challenging especially since she is old.

don't you think it will be too late? can't we just pamper her here with medicine and food?

When does this Mali will go to Thailand? I hope that is going to be on March so that we could see each other there again. I am sure Mali would be missed. I think it is time for Mali to go back to the right place if that is the case. I am wondering what could be the feeling after going to the new place since Mali used to live here for decades I guess! Seems that his departure will be special, I could imagine that. I could also imagine how the people will miss that elephants especially the ones who are taking care of this elephant.

i don't exactly when mali will be transported back to thailand but i advise you to go to the zoo as soon as possible so that you can have the last glimpse of mali. oh did you say you're going to thailand?

Yeah that will be on March though I doubt it if they will bring Mali there on that month right away. Of course that is going to be a long process. But if that is confirmed then I am sure this is going to be this year. I've seen that elephant before I think I was kindergarten and college.

I do not think that if he was transferred to Thailand, they would be leaving him to the forest to fend for himself. There are elephant sanctuaries in Thailand and to be honest, mali is really better off in Thailand because they would be able to care for her needs there better than what we were able to do for her here in manila zoo. Elephants are social animals, they are tamed too, but they probably are okay in groups (groups or family they grew up with). the concern is more for mali if she would be able to adjust because she was not used to being with her own kind for the longest time. I hope she would successfully cope with her elephant "family when she is transferred already. Just curious though, how or why did they think to send her to Thailand? This seemed odd and that we are too obvious in saying we could not help or care for Mali so wer are just sending her away!

yes, mali has been the only elephant here and i wonder how he would react when he's around with others of his race. maybe they just wanted mali to experience the normal life of an elephant just for the few years of his life trying to make up for the time he was caged.

I think the 4 years remaining for Maali will be further reduced if she'll be transferred to Thailand. She will have to endure the travel, the stress of transferring from one case to another, from being domesticated to surviving in the wild. I believe this is a pure business and politics issue at Manila Zoo not necessarily of Maali alone. They want the zoo to close down and be able to use the area for business. By the way Sir Maali is a female elephant.

i actually didn't know mali is a female. thanks fr the info. i've also read that news that there's a plan to close the zoo.

I am not aware of this news, but why did Manila Zoo only decided on it now? I have never been to Manila ZOO for more than 30 years, how has it become? Placing Mali in a different environment might be difficult , but then, I am really not sure how he could just be with other elephants who have have been together all their lives.

i think there was the same clamor last year. maybe the have finally studied and realized all options and finally decided this is the right thing to do. better late than never.

Man always would like to play gods over animals, probably siting scripture that he has been given dominion over them since the time of Adam, it was different then, no cages were yet invented

as much as possible i would like to see animals freely moving. like in the safari in africa. if not, maybe a bigger place where they can roam freely like the zoos in other countries.

Probably Mali can adapt there in Thailand. Certainly, there are zoologists studied the situation of Mali and decide Mali to be there for his own good. There are probably good reasons.

i really wish they considered all the possibilities. i think mali deserves the best in his remaining life after entertaining the kids who visited our zoo.
