Can chocolate cause depression?

As a girl, I love chocolates, especially the dark ones. There's not a week that I don't consume chocolates. Unfortunately, 1 week ago I had a weird experience w/ it. I wasn't sure about it until I realized it was the only new food I consumed. It was a dark chocolate with blueberries inside. I forgot the brand but it was the first time I tasted their chocolates. The following day, I was easily irritable and unusually in a very low mood for no reason at all. I would snap on my younger brother even if he didn't do anything wrong, and I felt very down and low on just about anything; mostly things that didn't use to bother me at all. I consumed the said chocolates for 3 days and it really worsened my state; but it was on the 3rd day I finally realized what's happening. I had to drink lots of glasses of water before I finally somehow recovered from the negative effects.
I'm wondering if someone else has experienced this?

Hi!
Welcome to mylot.
I have not heard that a dark chocolate (with black berries) could make us irritable or disturbed.
I understand instead eating chocolates could give us instant energy and it could brighten up our mood.
It is interesting that consuming chocolate produced some uncalled for results for you.
You could do some research on it through internet.
Also, if you can get hold of email of the Manufacturer, you could compalin to them. They would revert to you to expalin their position.

Unfortunately I really forgot the name of the manufacturer. My mom immediately threw away the container after all the chocolates were consumed. It was weird since I was the only one who felt that way, all the others in the house didn't.
Thank you for the welcome! :)

Next time if someone offers you such dark chocolates, you better avoid it.
Also do a test chech whether eating any other chocolate changes your mood or makes you feel weird.

Oh no ... this is the first time I heard the negative effect of chocolates
on human behaviour / mood. Normally I heard that chocolates help our body
to release an element that make us happy. Maybe because of the combination
of chocolates and blueberries ?? I hope more myLotters here
can share their experiences with chocolates.
Another story that I heard was that dogs can't tolerate chocolates, it
could be hazardous or poisoning them. That is really scary!

Yes I know about dogs not tolerating chocolates too! I really kept that in mind when I used to own a dog. Unfortunately, he passed away when he was just several months old. He caught some worms w/c are really hazardous for them; unlike for us humans.
I heard that not only dogs cannot tolerate chocolates. Cats and horses too! But I'm not so sure about that though :D

Huh? Really? Hmmm... well, it is so hard to believe. I love chocolates too, but I have not experienced depression after eating chocolates or it is because I just ate only one day. I don't know. It is just hard to believe. Maybe it is because its my first time to hear this.

I couldn't believe it myself as well. I eat a lot of chocolates and it was the first time I encountered it. I did do some research online and there has been a connection. But not much studies were done for it yet. I was just wondering if any of the users have experienced this one too..

In my case, chocolate has the other side effect and I also heard it from other people saying that chocolote is more consumed when you already have a depression. I even listened to some doctors saying that chocolate usually is an anti-depressive treatment, as its taste and flavour makes you feeling better. So I wonder if your negative effects are really based on the chocolate or you might have another reason for your feelings. Of course, not everybody reacts on the same way. Personally, I love chocolate and never had such a negative experience.

I think that somehow, chocolate has been the companion of the depressed. It has become sort of a "comfort food". There has been studies that show that depression could stimulate chocolate cravings as ‘self-treatment’ if chocolate confers mood benefits.
But further studies should be done to know if chocolate is indeed a cure or a cause of depression.

Hi amemarie, I am not a fan of chocolates, and sweets but i do eat them occasionally. I prefer dark chocolate too because i like the strong taste and its less sweet so i like it. :D
but I have NEVER heard of chocolates causing depressions and mood swings. Are you sure it is not yet the time of the month for you( period, i mean?) he he Just kidding. Chocolates are even supposed to help you feel better, not bitter or irritated. mostly people would even feel happier, lighter, and moods changing to being happy because it is actually a food that is for that purpose... :D

Quite the opposite. Chocolate is a natural mood elevator. Something else made you sad.It could be the sugar high then the drop in blood sugar.

good day amemarie,
i do loved chocolates. and whenever i feel stressed, i do eat a lot of chocolates as my desserts. hence, according to the content that i have read, desserts are the antidote for our stressed. thus when you read it backwards, stressed can be read desserts. and with your concern, it is my first time to encounter a chocolate will be the cause of a depression.
