Hello fellow mylotters. I've been given this wonderful chance by my cousin to use a portion of the land they are buying in the province. My cousin said I can do pretty much whatever I want with it. I'm thinking of raising pigs and then selling them when they grow up. What do you guys think? Any other suggestions? Pointers?

Well if you have the skill to raise hogs then why not. Raising hogs is not an easy tasks since you have to build the cages. You also have to consider your neighbors since it will definitely smell in the surrounding area so you also need to see if there are neighbors that will be affected. It is best that you research and learn from other hog raisers if there is an association it is best that you build a good network so that you will not be left alone in running your piggery.

Thank you for the advice. I'm set to attend a seminar from DTI and I'm expecting to learn much from them. I think I won't have any problems with neighbors since the lot is very huge. Also, the surrounding area is also for agricultural purposes. I just hope I would get the hang of it once I've started it. Thanks again.

When I was young I used to see one piggery that what he did in his place was plant the surrounding area with fragrant flowers to dispel the foul odor. Somehow it worked for him and it served as another source of income since the waste coming from the pigs became the fertilizers for the sampaguita which bloomed heavily because of its enriched soil and sold its flowers as well. Maybe you can do that as well.

Good for you that you are able to get a piece of land at your disposal. Take advantage of it to make money out of it. Maybe if there are more spaces left you can also try planting different plants like veggies and fruit bearing ones so you can really take advantage of the space and somehow make good use of the manure it will produce.
Another suggestion is using the manure as a source of methane gas to produce a fuel which can in turn power your place and be independent from using the commercial electricity. But I think this one needs more study since it is more techie in approach.

This business requires a lot of planning, resources, huge area and work/dedication too. My mother owns a backyard hog raising too but she is now of age and it really takes a lot of hardwork when you have no help. You will also need seminars and proper trainings to understand the trend of this business, But we all know this is very good business so i wish you goodluck in this new venture. I am envious.

Yes, I also believe that this line of business requires dedication, proper training, and lots of hard work. I just hope I would be able to do all of those in order for this business to succeed. I plan to go on seminars organized by DTI. Thank you for the information.

Before setting your heart on a hog farm... be sure to check if the area has a zonal permit for that kind of business... or else your neighbors might complain... check the quality of soil... for the type of cash crops that you can plant there... or if you are the patient kind... a Mango farm would be a great way to go... everybody loves mangoes... and i know of some farmers who really are earning a lot from this... especially during the season...

Yep, I've also set my eyes on mango farming. I guess I'll go plant some mango trees on our first site visit. I've heard from my cousin that there are already trees in the area. My cousin on the other hand is planning to set up poultry there. Thanks for the advice.

Hog raising is a business. Business must have enough capital. Some are right you have to have the skills in hog raising. It is better to raise hog and sell than to produce piglets to sell. It is hard to take care a female pig to be a mother since time consuming and high risk of the mortality of the piglets.

Hi,
Good for you to have a relative that let you share what he had. Make good use of the land, everybody doesn't have one. Hog raising can be rewarding if you get the hang of it, it not an easy undertaking to start with. Be careful to know every trick in the book for if you don't take it seriously, you end up like a pig in a sty, broke and only good for slaughter. Don't forget to plant too. Fruit trees especially, and vegetables. They're good sidelines, but as I've said, be prepared to break your back. Farm work don't come that easy, but it pays eventually.

Any business that will deal with the production of goods or planting is good as it will contribute to the economy of the country.
Just see to it that the place can be reached by vehicles and with enough water supply.
Have a nice day!
