Last week I had an appointment with a Vascular Surgeon and I got so upset over what he told me that I didn't think to ask him the questions that I should have and he wasn't very open about my problem. I might go for a second opinion but today I have an appointment with my psychiatrist and am hoping she can answer a couple of questions for me. I have asked her questions about problems other than psych and she seem very informative and had some good answers for me. Do you think she'll be able to give me some advice on my cardio problem? Do you think psychiatrists know a bit about medical problems other than just psych?

Hi! I think your psychiatrist may give you some answers, because everyone who studies psychology and psychiatry is obliged to study biological, medical and anatomy sciences, too. I have studied this object and it was part of the obligatory program. But yet I think you should seek for a second opinion from a medic in the cardio-vascular speciality, because in essense psychiatrists are not medical experts, they just study medicine as part of the program and yet this part of the education is quite more superficial than the education that medical doctors go through. I hope you will find your answers soon, as well as a proper treatment.

I guess it depends on the pyschiatrist, I have seen quite a few I have to admit and only one of them have been a positive influence on me, the others well to be blatantly frank have been charlatans and I would have got more sense out of the cat! You have nothing to lose but to sound her out, if she doesn't know then fair enough.

A psychiatrist may give you feedback when you ask her questions regarding your physical health; however, there are limits to what she can advise you on. Those things are simply beyond her scope of expertise and practice, and she would not risk her license by stepping beyond what she is licensed to do.
For instance, you may want to know if a psych med could interact with a med prescribed by a medical doctor. That she would be able to answer.
If you need a second opinion on a vascular issue, you need to get that second opinion from someone who works within that specialty. You wouldn't go to your dentist for a broken leg, so why would you turn to your psychiatrist for information on your vascular issues?

Most of the psychiatrists are well informed. It is their job to get you thinking right. If information is what you want to be reassured, they will have it or in case they are not so well informed, they will source it for you. Please keep in mind that what the psychiatrist has to say is not in the domain of her expertise.
In any case, your Vascular surgeon is still a better source for advice for your condition. It is normal to be upset on hearing that one suffers from a particular serious condition, but, have faith and talk to your Vascular surgeon once more. you will benefit from it.
I do not know what your condition is, but I have a cardiac condition called Diastolic dysfunction and am on medication for it. This came as a complication from prolonged Diabetes. However, just to reassure you, I am functional and so will you be.
Good Luck!

No, she can't go consult a cardio specialist. In your cardio problem you need a doctor. Psychiatric concentraions is on behavior and has no relation with cardio problem.
