Why so many people adore cats?

I mean cats don't do much to get this type of adoration. Dogs are good at barking at strangers, cows at giving milk to make you stronger, horses are good at taking you places with less time than when you try by yourself, pigs taste good even when they are no more (sorry fellas, they really do), birds and fishes have the visual effect by their side and I can go on and on. But all a cat ever does is nap.
They look cute while napping, they look cute while eating, they look cute while doing nothing much at all. And that cute-ness kills us all, making us fall in love with them.
What about you fellas? What do you think cats have that makes them the most popular in the pet kingdom?

Maybe we just want to surround ourselves with creatures that are infinitely lovable, but do not and will never feel an ounce of love for us as a proxy for society. Maybe we don't want the easy automatic loyalty of a dog. Maybe we want a pet whose default expression is a supercilious glare.

Thanks for your comment, Nursefrai06. You have summed up pretty well. There are lots of maybes but this is a topic we will always have to answer in maybes.

I dont know why people like cats so much without doing anything at all. Maybe we should ask them for dating advice.

besides being cute and having a nice fur to stroke cats truckle (not as much as dogs but they do): they behave like children if you care for them and they meow if they feel cold outside and thereby submissively ask you to let them in. They are masters in getting what they want because they know exactly what you like and if they give it to you they know they can expect something else in return. And since they truckle and people like to be in power we love them. Sometimes it's just love though, no wielding power.
Btw, there's something to the saying: people don't tame cats, it's vice versa

Thanks stk40m. You have been really thorough in analyzing the relationship between cats and us. I totally agree with you that they are the masters in getting what they want. My uncle has 17 cats in free roaming mode in his house, and I see them doing exactly that everyday. And they do deceptively make us think they are helpless and depend on us to survive, which, grants us a false power position with them. As you said, people don't tame cats, it's vice versa :D
