Very irritating--shopping in Big Bazaar

I stay just behind a very huge mall and can walk in and buy my regular stock of vegetables or other essentials without much trouble.
.It is Big Bazaar. But I do not like one thing here. They pack things in large quantities and sell them as tempting offers. But the offers are not that tempting at all. First of all, the package is a few months old.
Secondly, why should we be forced to buy four scrubbing pads for a meager saving of one rupee? They do not sell single items .No one kilogram flour is available but there are only five kilograms of wheat flour at times.
Many of the stock sold have dates that do not inspire confidence. They pack three large packs of biscuits with a saving of five or ten rupees but the packed biscuits are crumbled and broken. The pack is old too. They rely on the busy or careless customer who would overlook these things ; the shop is just business oriented..
Should they not be more customer friendly? How long can such business thrive?
Your views please.

I too frequent Big Bazaar but not regularly as I have my grocer here who I have patronised since many years. He has packed items from good companies. But there are some things I like to buy from Big Bazaar. I like their plastic-ware such as buckets. I also like the bed linen, bath mats, door mats, aprons and such. I picked up some footwear for home use which I liked very much. Then they have the paratas. I like the jeera paratas which could be frozen and used by just heating them as per instructions. I picked up some olive oil the other day. Even red chilies are available in good quality.I have gone in for so many other things too. What you can do is spend a little time and go through the shop leisurely, when you will get to know the shop better. All what you have mentioned you need not buy. Others perhaps go for them as the prices are less than the market price. They may not mind broken biscuits.
I do not buy vegetables and fruits from there. I have all that available next door.

I agree with you. There are some items that suit me too and I buy them ; now I am slightly disillusioned with vegetables there because they are from the deep freeze and sometimes some of them are not great. And onions are sold in five kg packs and potatoes too in two kilogram packs. We are unable to look inside the pack. So, I choose not to buy these.

Most Big Bazaar outlets have common features but I do not know whether you have a place where they sell only chocolates and dry fruits. I visit that corner. Some time back they were selling some brand known as Choco Pearls. I got hold of the person whose product is was and directly bought some but they closed 'shop' in a short while. These chocolates compared well with any imported variety.
To each their own as they say.

Is there another place where you can buy things or is this your only option?

Thanks for sharing Kala
I have the same complaint about the BigBazzar/Kolkata Bazzar i mean the big malls, but the one here in Hyderabad looked better, recently in last week of January, the had the 'sab se sata pach din' offer; Kalyani bought so many things
But as you say this way they clear off old stocks like atta, haldi powder, mirch powder etc, they might be manipulating the expiry dates.

That is what usually happens when food are stuffed in bulk- crumpled biscuits, cookies, etc. But I think that you just need to be more vigilant in looking for the best buy. That kind of supermarket is best if you have a small store that is far from the city.

Hello Kalav
That's sounds really careless. I mean broken biscuits and no small packing available, can be really irritating. They should surely try to think about it,otherwise they will surely lose customers in near future.
In my city, I have also noticed few things you have mentioned. I mean big packages are available but not the small one, so in the end we forced for purchasing more quantity, as sometime we don't have time to go for another store. But I have never experience broken biscuits and other item in Big Bazzar in my city. You should have complain about it... Well, I guess they are lacking the management.

Hi,
You can actually write it in a piece of paper and put in their suggestion box / or email to their customer service. Usually Big Bazar is targeting those who do heavy purchases for a large joint family where 'buy 1, get 1 free' for a bathing soap or a scrubber may be of use. But i find Realince much better than other such marts as they too sell the product at half price (almost) well before the expiry dates.

My first inclination would be simply, not to shop there.
An easy decision because buying in huge quantities is out for me. There are some things that are OK, things like meat that I use regularly but sauces and condiments, herbs and spices and goods used for baking take me a long time to use so I buy the smallest amount available.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to have shoddy, damaged or broken items unless they are heavily reduced then I could understand people maybe taking advantage of the saving but you say this is not the case. Too weird.

Dear Kalav
Their catchline (err... tagline - Isse Sasta Aur Kahan) is simply because of this reason that they buy everything which is either at the near of its expiry date or even damaged... the seconds shops if any are still better as you know that they sell seconds stuff... but this retail chain makes brisk business only by selling such items. forget the grocery, even the clothing range with them is worst. When they opened their first outlet here at Bhubaneswar, I got a saree for my mom and after the first wash, it was all messed up and in threads. On trying to return in exchange, they said that they have no such policy.
Many still visit such malls just because they think, saving a rupee here will go a long way with them and in this they dont do any much of calculations that such stuff which is near expiry or even not good in quality might make things complicated in the near future.

They just want to get rid of old items. So they sell any outdated or old items and said that it’s discounted and you are saving your money more. Although I think some careless customers who bought them maybe will not use entirely of them since they are sold in big package and since the items are not fresh or old, they ended up throw them up. That’s because of the temptation to save more money. But sometimes I did find some great items which is suitable and useful for me, so that’s just depend.

This is good if you are using the products right away and not stock it just for a reserve. Maybe when you have an occassion and your cooking for many people, it saves a little. If they don't do this, their products will be wasted, it's up to customers like you who are wise enough when and what to buy.
