Sick time

Does your job give you sick time? Here a few years back they tried to make it a law in the next county over that people have a right to sick pay... it hasn't passed though they bring it up time to time. My hubby doesn't have sick time, if he's sick he has to burn vacation days. I have a friend who's hubby is in the same situation if he's ill it's burn a vacation day. I don't get sick time either though I'm only part time. But I do get a few hours vacation a year so burning those or just going with out hours is the choice I have to make.
Does your job give you sick time? Do you think it should be required of companies to provide it?

We have to use vacation days where I work too unless we get put out by a doctor or our family needs our care. If we get the FMLA paperwork filled out, we accumulate 2 days per year that we can only use for FMLA or bereavement purposes. If it is just an illness..no. I do think that people should have "sick" days allowed. Even if we bring in doctor excuses where I work we still get an absence with a note to the side Dr.excuse unless we get that FMLA paperwork filled out.

That's a whole lot of paperwork! I know even at the school the older two are at if they miss more than 2-3 days I think I have to have a Dr excuse. I may have to check into it as I believe she's got the flu.
Even if you get a Dr's excuse you still have to burn vacation as there's no sick time. Hubby had been home with shingles and whatnot for a bit over a week and we had to burn vacation or we were SOL!

In big companies here in my country If we are regular employee of the company we are entitled to have a sick leave. I think it is required in any company policy here.

I wish it was universal here too! But the small business owners fight such things and I understand as neither can afford to lose pay or pay someone who is not at their job. I feel guilty if I have to call in sick plus I can't afford to since I'm only part time so I do my best to make a go of it unless I'm very very ill like with the flu.

Our company gives Sick leave benefits and vacation leave. all are 30 days in total, 15 days for each leave type. Sick leaves are the kind of leaves you can use when you fell ill or is sick a day ot two. when you are able to consume your sick leave, our company will already deduct your absence as absence without leave. However there are instances that some of the employees would use vacation leaves as absence type. :D

Where I work we don't get sick time. If you are sick you either take a vacation day or go without pay...I do think they should pay part of your wages if you are sick....of couse some people abuse it and that is why we don't have it....it was abused in the past!

Yeah we both get sick time. I forget how much hubby gets per year.. I think maybe a week, possibly 2. I know I got 40 hours of sick time at my job.. and being a 20 hour a week teller it was equivalent to 2 weeks of sick time. Last year I only used 13 hours of it though.

I work in IT industry and luckily we do have sick leaves. Not sure, if that is a company thing.I did not see sick leave while i was in US, though the organization i worked provided other options. So this could be country specific as well. The amount of sick leaves provided to an employee differs from organization to organization. One of them provided only 7 in an year.My current one provides me 15 in an year.I like to burn my leaves as sick than burning the vacation or annual leaves.Annual leaves could be compensated for cash later on.And sick leaves could be taken without asking much. You can report sick when and where needed.Of course, many misuse it.And some do it wisely. Thats a thin line of things there. But sick leaves does not have that privilege. The only unlucky thing about sick leaves is that its not carry forwarded to next year. You need to finish the amount of sick leave provided to you in a calendar year, that year itself.Hopefully things will become better for your husband.Good to know your things. Thanks!

Hello again Snuggle, I´m happy to read you again. I decided to be a stay at home mother, and I run an eshop with the help of my family since 6 years ago. So I don´t have sick time. Last week I broke my nose, I went to social security because my hubby has the right of using it and his family. But I was at bed full time for 4 days, and I had to work as soon as I had the chance to do it.
I did the pc work from my laptop at bed, and my mother and my daughter, helped me attend clients. I have to work hard. That´s the way I choosed.
Blessings Snuggle... dainy

All the companies I worked for provides sick leaves on top of vacation leaves and the rest of other leaves. It really depends on the country where the company is situated. It also depends on the no. of days for vacation leaves and sick leaves. If for example your company provides for 30 days vacation leaves then it's basically just having 15 days VL and 15 days SL. Makes me wonder how many days your hubby's company provides?

For all I know, in each company there are two(2) regular type of leave. One is a VACATION LEAVE - which is of course use for vacation purposes or any type of activities that can be planned ahead. The other one is SICK LEAVE - this is use for instances when the employee gets sick unexpectedly or expected sickness. I think this is required on all countries because its the most basic need of an employee, everyone needs a vacation and a time to rest if you are sick. So if you're company doesn't allow this, then its time you ask the higher authorities or your government about this.

Wow snuggle I had to check your profile to see where you were
located...In all my years of working I have never had a job
that did not offer sick time...
When I went left my last job because of the cancer I had so
much sick time there I had to use the sick time, a months
and 1/2, before by disibility would kick in...
I hope they get sick time on the books before long especially
on your husbands job....
