It was announced today that the United States Postal Service will be going to five days giving up delivery on Saturdays. They will continue to deliver packages, medicine and express mail but no first class mail delivery. I feel bad for the postal workers who undoubtely will lose their jobs over this. Like there are not enough people out of work already. They are blaming it on email. The USPS are losing alot of money each and everyday due to the internet, they claim. What are your thoughts on us losing a day of mail service?

I think it's a great idea. It relieves people of worrying about someone getting into their mail if they are away for the weekend and honestly, most people I know don't look at the mail on Saturday anyway, they are too busy.
I'm sorry if people lose their jobs over this but it's the Post Office's fault. They've wasted money sponsoring athletes and all sorts of other stupid things. They've made deals with unions that are bankrupting them. They've wasted money on so many things that this is a drastic measure they need to stay in business. Also, it's a privately owned business now, not a government agency as far as I know, so they have the right to do as they wish.

You are correct, I looked it up just now:
"..it is owned entirely by the United States Government, the USPS functions as if it were a private corporation. It is run by an 11-member Board of Governors appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, with one member -- the Postmaster General -- acting as the Chief Executive Officer."
Now I understand why it is such a mess even though it is supposed to be run as a private corporation--the government board calls the shots. I think we have to do something to save the USPS and if that means no Saturday deliveries, so be it.
Jobs might be lost over this small sacrifice but what if the USPS goes under completely? Think of all the jobs lost then in every industry. UPS and other services will, of course, expand to fill that gap in service but many occupations will be destroyed--kind of like what happened to answering services and courier services before cell phones, the internet, fax machines and other services.

No its not a privately owned business. The government is their bosses. If congress decides not to let this happen it won't. We shall see if this passes. It looks like it will but time will tell. It suppose to start in August.

I can only say that USPS is losing a lot of money not because of email or any Internet technology, it is because Postal Service is a highly inefficiently run semi government entity, and has poor management style back by the full force of US federal government, it is not just my personal opinion, you can see by yourself over the past few decades, with or without the ease of email technology in this couple of years back, this government agency is always making losses instead of a profit year compare to privately run courier and delivery services. Even though it is a regular loss generating government agency in providing delivery service to the public, it still will get funding from the federal government years in and out without much of the accountability demanded from congress. May be they need to begin to think how to manage this postal service more efficiently and cut down on their huge expenses by operate only five days a week, it sure will make their overhead cost much lower annually judging at the low quality of services they provide compare to the private sector.

A government run business, that has a monopoly on certain services, and a strong public union and it is losing big money every year What is wrong with this picture? The government runs a business the Union contribute to the election of the politicians who make the rules and negotiate the contract. The problem with the USPS is the same city and state governments are having financial problems in part it is due to the demands of the Public Unions.

My personal past experience of paying ten dollar for just a 'registered' normal size letter and using their package delivery service to a foreign country from going no where to the fact that the manager of the USPS station in my area has no clue where they are after several week of delivery given me an impression that Postal service is so inefficiently run that the management is not quite sure how to manage the basic package delivery and mail service at all except survive from constantly raising their fare and postage charges regardless of upgrading their customer service annually to the public, this agency indeed depend a lot on the mandated federal funding to continue their operation without any fear of going bankrupt at all.

That is true but of course the USPS is not going to admit to inefficiently running the service. They have to blame someone for losing money every year. The USPS needs an overhaul from top to bottom. The way they run it is just not working for us the customers or the postal workers themselves. I know because my sister is a postal carrier.

I think we'll adjust to it, just like we do everything else. Things change. There have been rumors for years that the post office was going to stop Saturday delivery and I'm really surprised that they waited so long. It will save them quite a bit of money. I don't know if it will get them out of the red, though.

Yes, I have heard about this for a few years now but we still have to see what Congress says. I believe it will go through though because the USPS is financially in alot of trouble.

The post offices in my area are open until noon on Saturdays at the latest.
There are some post offices in other places that are open a couple of hours later.
However, it's already a short day.
People doing window service will get an extra day off--which might cut their pay by some but not a whole lot, and it will save them gas getting to and from work on a short day.
People taking care of packages--whether delivering them or getting them ready to be delivered--will still have the same length of hours.
Since there are surely several postal workers nearing retirement age, they will probably just work until they retire, and their positions won't be replaced.
This is how I would hope that things would be handled, anyway.
Even though email is very handy, I believe there will still be several of us who still like to hold snail mail in our hands, so the postal service won't go totally out of business.
If Congress and The Postal Union would quit putting their agendas first and think about the people they're supposed to be serving, this would make a very big difference in the future of snail mail.

I believe the story stated that the post office will remain open on Saturdays. However, the first class mail will not be delivered on Saturdays. I'm sure however, there will be some more closing of certain post offices with slow business.

Hiya lelin,
Me I have not got three Christmas Cards because we are so far out and the very small post office closes very early due to cuts if you are prepared to walk 7 miles there and 7 miles back and to get there before half past ten you will get your cards and letters if not.
Because of the cuts I am losing letters and business we do not even have a post man here at all.
If before 15 days you have not collected your letters they are sent back to their destination.
They have cut right back on postal workers here as you can see we do have UPS though and if you send for anything through them they are very efficient.
Saturday delivery here is out altogether.xxx

I can't believe that is the type of mail service you get. I can't imagine living somewhere where you can't get your mail everyday. That is crazy. So for us missing Saturday deliveries shouldn't be a big deal. We should be grateful for 5 days of deliveries.

Hiya lelin,
Hand on my heart that this is true its mainly because we live in a very small place with only a few houses you see so seven miles is seven miles there and seven miles
back.
Its okay if you have a Car and even if you had a particular post box you still have to be there before half past ten.
However this seems to be that he is closed for some and not for others lol.
Because of the cuts here this is the way things are going if you live in the main cities things are better but still bad.
I feel and truly feel for the South American people here that have to send money home as Western Union is used but for some reason Moneygram is used more by these people probably cheaper fees but then they have to travel miles to find the nearest bank that does use it or any post office.xxx
This also goes for the people from the Dominicans and Cuba. Its a real pain for them and I think it should be made easier for them.xxx

I heard that this was going to happen a while ago but I did not think it really would I guess, or at least not so soon...
Like you, I feel bad for the people that are going to get less hours now. Jobs are hard enough to find and keep right now, I hate that more people are going through it! =(
I don't really have a problem with it, unless I am waiting for something to come. If I'm not then it's not a huge deal for me. Sometimes, when we are waiting for something really important to show up then it might bug me a little bit! Lol.

Personally, I know people who have lost their jobs recently because of the Post Office problems. Maybe they can blame it on the internet and everyone now doing online banking, but if you do not buy a roll of Forever stamps as often as the price keeps on going up, it gets quite expensive to mail something. And then if it is a package, you are really talking some money.
I would think it is due to Email, Online Banking and Facebook that less mailing is done, but for me, this or the phone is always the Best and cheapest way to go when keeping in touch.

Exactly, everytime you turn around they are raising the stamps and mailing of packages. If they were not so expensive people would be using them more often I believe. So to go cheaper I use email, mylot, skype and facebook for my communication. If their stamps were still a quarter I'm sure more people would be using them, but 46 cents for one letter is crazy. I mailed Christmas cards but limited my amount that means crossing some people off the list because I couldn't afford it.

Most Saturdays I don't get to the Post Office to get my mail. I live too close to the PO to have my mail delivered so I have to rent a box at the PO to receive my mail. It will not effect most people and few postal workers. The positions that should be lost would be positions that will not be filled. A survey of business showed that they could easily change to see that bills and checks are deliverer M-F. I don't see this a a big problem.

In Canada we only have Saturday delivery the week before Christmas. That's it. As far back as I can remember we haven't had Saturday delivery other than that one time a year. I don't understand why so many Americans are up in arms about this. Frankly, I was surprised when I heard that was Saturday delivery all year round.

I'm also ok with it! I'm surprised that Canada only has delivery five times a week, I didn't know that. I thought everyone had delivery six days a week. I just feel bad for the workers who will lose overtime or their jobs over this.

I'm sure train people were having fits back in the day when automobiles started to make them obsolete.
There's still a train niche, but not nearly as big.
Sorry, Postal Service, but you're becoming obsolete.
Shame that the men and women there will eventually lose their jobs. I'm hoping they have job skills and didn't plunk into federal employment as a career with no backup.
When you exist on the taxpayer dime, there's no guarantee that dimes can continue to be thrown into the wishing well.
The mail is mismanaged completely. The fact that private companies and Internet connections are more convenient just adds to the issue.
It won't be long until they completely change.

I think it's kind of stupid to lose a day of shipping because a lot of things already only ship on business days and now that they are taking away saturdays all shipping can be considered business days. It's unfortunate for buying supplements and medicine that isn't prescribed because it will just be considered regular mail now and people like me will have to wait two extra days if we don't get our order done in time.

So many post offices have closed already. I guess that it was inevitable that a five day delivery week would eventually arrive. I am certain that there will be some people who will be aggravated by this postal decision. Yet again, there will be those who will not be bothered in the slightest by it. I guess we should feel lucky that we have postal service at all. There may come a day when we will have to go somewhere to get our mail for ourselves.

Definitely inconvenient, but we have to respect that decision by the USPS though, since they don't have enough dough to keep the operation going. I felt the same, over the past decade, the internet and the convenient of world wide web indeed change the landscape of message sending and the requirement of paying bill through postal mail. When you gain some, you will definitely lose some.

I don't remember the last time I paid a bill by mail. Everything is done online. Its also their fault because they keep raising the stamps plus service has gone done the tubes. When you mail a birthday card from Puerto Rico to Florida and it takes five days to get there that is a problem to me. Even with putting two stamps on it. We are a hop, skip and jump from each other whats the problem?

Scary stuff when there is lack of service with no money. Which then results with no pay. Then you have people with no jobs, no food, no money to pay bills.

I know I just read earlier from another person in Canada that your mail is only delivered five times a week. I really don't see the big deal because I don't get alot of mail. My concern is more for the postal workers who will be losing either their job or overtime pay.

I don't mind at all. Email is more efficient. It will be one less day I have to walk out to the mailbox. The price of stamps is getting ridiculous. I knew this was coming because my adopted brother works at the post office.

I have heard that a major expense for the postal service is the very generous retirement packages the retirees get. These big companies were not thinking through the whole process of who was going to be paying for these big retirement packages when they offered them years ago. We the customers are paying for retirements, instead of for the just the products and services the big companies are providing. They are cutting back on their services and raising our prices so in order to pay people who are no longer working for them.

That is ridulous in my opinion. I don't use the postal service as much as I use to due to the cost. Everything is going up and its not right for us the customers to be paying for their big retirement packages. What on earth were they thinking. Now I hear Congress has blocked them from not working on Saturdays.
