Call of Greed

Philippines
February 8, 2013 2:34am CST
I found this purse in our classroom which I believed left by someone in the class before us. I intentionally hid the purse in my bag and checked how much money does it contain. And to my surprise, it had P550 in there which is quite a lot already. Then my conscience and heart was really pounding and undecided on what to do. I ended up returning that purse in the Office of student affairs catering lost and found items. It was really a call of greed!

It's a good thing you avoided the temptation. Always bear in mind the Golden Rule, do not do unto others what you don't want others do unto you. What goes around really come around. Trust me. :)

I really did keep my mind on that particular rule. I keep telling myself that, "this will just be a one-time gratification compared to a lifetime struggle of conscience"

That was a good call you made - but it doesn't always have happy endings like that. Years ago - my husband was teaching in a University in our city, and I went to pick him up from work. I was early, and wandered in to his computer lab to help him shut the computers down and all. I found a purse on one of the chairs. When I checked - inside was over one thousand dollars in cash! All in twenties, tens, etc. We debated about taking it to security - and my husband said when something gets sent to security, the owner never ends up getting it back. There was a lot of corruption at the time in their security department. Students who had been told a lost item was sent to security found they never got the item back - security would deny having it, or having seen it, etc. So, my husband locked the purse and money up inside a strong box in his office and left a note on the door of the computer lab. The note said Lost Purse Found. We figured anyone claiming it could describe the purse and say what was inside. There was no wallet in there, by the way - the cash was literally all inside - loose. No keys, nothing. A few students tried to claim it, but no one got the description of the purse correct - and because the purse was a geometric designed - with different colors - it wouldn't have been difficult to describe it correctly. Three months went by. Six months. Two years. No one came back for it. We decided to then take the sign down and donate the cash. We gave it to a cat rescue organization.

Sure - if no one claims it within a certain amount of time, I believe the finder has every right to then claim the money/purse. It's not thousands of dollars - and if someone is that desperate for that money back, they would retrace their steps and know where to look. So if it's not claimed, go for it.

I was telling myself that too. That the purse may not get back in the hands of the owner. Anyhow, maybe few weeks from now, I would claim it myself . What do you think of claiming it back? :)

It was very nice of you to return the purse. It shows your not greedy. Most people now a days probably wouldn't have returned it or would have but taken the money from it. I once found a purse in a bathroom full of money but i turned it in to the lost and found myself. See if my purse or wallet went missing or something i'd want someone to return it to me or lost and found so i don't take from what i find. You are a good person to take the purse to lost and found without taking anything from it.

I was thinking the same too because I once lost something important to me. I know the feeling of that and I do not want for other people to experience such just because of the evil lurking in some people.

I'm perplexed by the fact that you state you were undecided on what to do. I don't know what P550 is in terms of the USD but to me no matter what amount is in that purse I would have gone straight to the office immediately without thinking twice.

Thats roughly around $13.75 anyhow. Thanks for the idea you gave me there, maybe the next time I encounter such, I would not think twice to give it to the owner or someone in authority.

I am pretty confident that he/she will look in the office. Also, the office have other means for students to be aware that a purse had been given there.

If identification is in the purse, the office is able to contact the owner should they not go looking for it.

Hats off, buddy!!!! Great work, you manage to resist the temptation of money and you have done a big help to the owner. If imagine you have lost that amount of money somewhere and someone else take your money by granted, you will be hurt for sure. When the owner knows his money is save, a big relief for him and a big satisfaction will appear within us to see a person is happy because of you. Good job friend.

Its really a relief to my conscience because before submitting it in the office, my heart seems to stop beating and I really feel very nervous. But after handing it in, I feel way better.

It is already a form of stealing if you haven't decided to return or even bring it to the Office of the student. Of course we must really return the things that we have seen and honest with it.

I think for me you still have a good heart. Good thing you have changed your mind. Hope that the other teens like you will do the same knowing that schooling needs a lot of finances from everyday allowances to random projects.

But you refused and listened to your conscience instead so kudos for you. For a student, that money is already a big amount and the owner is very lucky that it's you who found it because the story might be different instead. Everyone have the experience of being tempted but only few refuse and this makes you a strong person.

Ha ha !! You mada a good choice but that you will be thinking if you would not have returned that all will be yours. But if you would not have given that puse then you would also have been thinking about that.Actually you did a gopd job and nothing else you will be blessed by that person if he get that. But that happens now with you and it will happen again at some point of time and you just have to maintain the same nature which you maintain right now. They are just the right test for us to see our nature and our thinking towards life and other personnels.

Your act was not only greed, but you would have also been stealing. I am glad you returned that purse, as that is the proper thing to do as that is the right thing! Good on you!

HI! By overcoming your greed and checking your emotions, you did the right thing by returning the lost purse. It would help you feel better and your conscious would be clear now, which would have been the case, had you kept the purse with you without returning it. Keep it up.

There has always been a fight between once conscious and greed. Greed as such is not a bad thing as greed can make you go for big things and work hard, Like in case of someone who is greedy for fame and he work hard to invent things but in this case , you did the right thing and showed not only to others but most importantly to yourself that your conscious is way above then your needs.
