Why would you leave such a mess?

My husband does some maintenance for some apartment buildings and houses owned by a friend of ours. He cleans up after people move out and fixes the places up so that they can be rented again. Some people just moved out of one of the houses and he went in to clean and see what had to be done. Walking in he noticed that there was garbage everywhere. He removed 20 bags of garbage from the house yesterday and he is still is not finished. Why would someone leave a place in such a condition, and this is not the first time he has had to do something like this. Do people not care because it is not their property? Do they not realize that it is their responsibility to pay for the clean up if it is not left in proper condition? Do people not have any respect? I just wonder why an adult would be so irresponsible and uncaring to others property!

While signing the rent contract the landlord could put a clause where the tenant should vacate the place leaving it in the condition that it was when they walked in. Then it will be an onus on the tenants to clean up the place. Else why would anyone bother. Cleaning a place costs money and a conscience too which does not exist these days unless it is included in the contract.

That also happens here at my in law's apartments. So what my in laws would do is hold on to the remaining rent deposit until everything is cleared and cleaned up from the vacated space. Then anything that my mother had to pay or fix just to make the space livable again, she deducts it from the rent deposit.

My brother-in-law is an property manager who sees this all the time. Sometimes its because the tenant is leaving on bad terms and recks the apartment. Other times its just people are slobs and they don't really care about someone elses apartment. When I use to rent I cleaned every apartment I ever lived in spotless upon leaving. Even when selling my homes I have made sure it is cleaned, dusted, vacuumed and mopped. I have even helped my daughters who have moved out of apartments clean their place that they are moving out of and also the new place they are moving into. I believe in general if it a low-income type dwelling people don't care about how they leave a place that is why alot of people don't want to rent.

Sometimes I suppose that it's because the tenants are elderly or have some other condition and so can't really keep up with it anymore, or maybe someone who works 24/7 and just gives up on the household chores, but really I think these kinds of reasons are few and far between. I think many people just don't have any respect for property, either their own or someone else's, and they feel like they can leave a place anyway they like. I wonder if they ever give a thought to how it makes them look in the eyes of others?

Some people are just plain lazy, or inconsiderate, or they think since they paid for it they can whatever they want with the place. And that includes leaving it in such a sorry state. Some people would even destroy stuff and would be so mad after they were asked to pay for it.
