OK so I am in the midst of having my first bout with shingles and it is a b****...but I think I am seeing the end..I didn't get the vaccine because i didn't want the live virus...so I took my chances and lost..
I have never ever had the flu and never ever received a flu shot. So now I am wondering..do I chance getting the flu or do my usual skipping the flu shot.
I know the shot does not cover all the flus out there and wonder if I should chance it..plus could the flu be any worse than these friggin shingles...
I wonder if others have this conversation with themselves??

I have this insane fear of needles, so I've refused all of these shots. I have suffered through the flu a few times (I used to get it once every seven years, but the last time I had it, was when the Swine Flu was going around), but have never had the shot.
I think this is a call you have to make on your own, especially since you're still sick with shingles. Maybe you should ask your physician what their opinion is at this time.

TY..you are not alone with fear of needles..I don't mind them..I even watch while they take blood from my arm vein, but then I have great veins so they never miss. I find it interesting that some tehs are so good you can't even feel the needle...
Yeah it's because of the shingles I am thinking about the flu shot ..I have no doubt my doc would say get the shot..she says that every year..maybe I will ask..I am seeing her next week.

Before I started having shots for my MS, I was fine with needles. Getting my blood drawn, or giving blood didn't bother me, but after having to get intramuscular shots once a week for my MS medicine (and later a subcu shot 3x a week), I really got turned off from it. I also have great veins, but I've never watched.
Good luck with your doctor's visit next week though.

Oh I am sorry..must be very tiring getting shots once a week.
Thanks for the good luck wishes..I think she just wants/needs to see me because she perscribed medication over the phone..I think it's in their rules to have a follow up apt since I have not seen her in awhile...

Nope, I get the flu shot. I have had the flu, I can remember almost every time I have had it, except the most recent time, which was the year I did not get the flu shot, but I had had it for several years running. The case was milder than I ever had. . . and I attribute that to having had the flu shot pretty consistently for about fifteen years. I remember how it felt when I was a teenager, and as a young mom and the best I can say is it is better than shingles because it does not last as long, but you can get a secondary infection like pneumonia, that can kill you.

this is a conversation that i don't have with myself, because i am NOT taking the chance with the flu shot. it is too risky. there is this guy on CNN, called piers morgan. he took the flu shot on his show to show that there is nothing to the flu shot. a couple of days later, he was stricken with the flu virus. he said he never had the flu before either. the flu feels bad, but you don't have to die from the flu. you can take care of it and your body can take care of it. people have been doing it like that for years before the flu shot and all these other kinds of experimental things have existed.

Hatley I can understand why you received a flu shot. Bronchitis and pneumonia are serious conditions.
LOL zapping is a good description ..I can feel nothing, then out of the blue an electric shock..it's maddening...and it's almost as if a reminder.."hey I am still here'..
The nurse practitioner recommended not getting acyclovir saying it wasn't really effective..even though I saw her within 72 hours of the start of the rash..
LOL I do find a certain comfort in posting about this condition..not sure why
Did you ever need or get a shingles shot after your bout with shingles??

I never have this argument with myself and I really hope I don't get shingles. I have had chicken pox before and I refuse to take the shingles shot.
The flu shot isn't safe in my opinion. I knew someone who was in a coma because of this shot. This shot contains well over the legal limit of Mercury you should be exposed to and much more. Honestly, the flu sucks if you get it. However, it changes from person to person and your flu might not be the flu in the shot and so on. If I want common cold medicine I will just go buy it.

I don't remember having chicken pox but since I have shingles I guess I must have. I refused the shot too..and now regret it...but many are in your position and avoid the shot.
I don't know about the mercury angle, but I share your opinion about the flu shot..plus it does not protect from all strains of the flu so I don't think it's of much use..
The flu couldn't possibly suck more than shingles

I always ask myself the same question before the winter starts, but I have yet to get a vaccine, as I am trusting my immune system!

Thank you I hope you don't get the flu either I do listen to experts but have found one has to weigh the pros and cons and not take their word for everyting without questioning what they say.
The previuos generation treated doctors like gods who could do no wrong..times have changed as we became more educated mainly thorough the internet..

What if you get the flu while still having this horrible shingle on set? If you are out around other people alot then I would get the shot. If you aren't then I wouldn't worry about it.

Up to you. I just get mine every year regardless. I have had the flu too many times and sure don't want it again.

Sounds like it's exactly the right thing to do for you..since you have had no ill effects..and especially since you have experienced the flu.
I think after my shingles experience, if the doc says it will help I will get the shingles vaccine.
AND if I ever experience the flu I will probably get the flu shot from then on....

It's been 4 weeks now and I am gettng better..though I still have zaps and itching that come and go...
I agree the flu would be no fun on top of this but again..that's my dilemma..I could give myself the flu by getting a shot..so do I take my chances...

Once you are well again, it would be good for you to get the flu vaccine. Your body has already gone through a lot due to you having refused to get the shingles vaccine. While the flu vaccine is only 62% effective, that improves your odds of not getting the flu.
Regarding the shingles vaccine, it is not too late to get the vaccine. Some people develop shingles multiple times. That is why it is important to still get the vaccination so that you do not have to suffer through that again.

Given the potential for developing shingles again, it is worth a conversation with your doctor.
I don't advocate blanket vaccination for the flu. I recognize that the efficacy rate is not as high as we would like. However, your situation is such that--once you have recovered from the shingles--getting vaccinated is the sensible thing to do.
I am a tree-hugging sort who loves natural remedies and believes in the power of food as medicine. However, that does not completely eliminate the need for medicine as medicine.
The fact is, vaccines have saved many lives. They have helped to all but eradicate certain diseases. Are they completely without risks? No. However, the risks are generally far less likely and far less serious than what happens if one is not vaccinated against the illness.

TY.. I share your respect for natural verses chemical prescriptions but agree they certainly have their place. My hubby is really into natural and while that is great, I see a need for doctors opinions too.
I think the net has helped and hurt us. I fnd natural remedies on line, but also find conflicting reports on medicine...plus the side effects at times are worse than the original need for the med.

Thank you..isn't it interesting how divided people are on this issue?? Some say absolutely not ...others say absolutely do it..
I will be seeing my doc this week so I will ask about the shingles shot..but shouldn't I have built up some immunity from this round at least for awhile???
My 'jury' is still out on the flu shot...

Absolutely not.
Do not get a shot for anything right now. Vaccines work by injecting you with weakened strains of a virus. Your immune system can easily defeat weak strains, and in the process it builds up defenses that work if the virus really shows up.
The problem is, your immune system is already fighting an illness, and it's not winning yet. You give yourself a douse of a flu shot, you may end up giving yourself the flu because your immune system is already weak fighting the shingles.
Absolutely not. Do not get a shot. Bad plan. Wait until you are fully well.
I personally have never had a flu shot, and I wouldn't get one for that reason. But even if I were to consider, not when I'm already sick.

I have flu occasionally. Not often. A couple of months ago, I was in a shopping complex and there I met a friend who was involved in state government-run free flu vaccine clinic. I was given a free flu vaccine shot. It was okay, no side-effect. God bless.

But I am worried the shot can make me sick..that's what my debate with myself is all about.....
I am careful with what I eat and I USED to exercise everyday .....except now it hurts to do the stretching and movements since I have shingles..
oh well this too shall pass...and better sooner than later

No i don't have this conversation with myself. I go and get the flu shot because of my kids. I've never had the flu either and for long time I never got the flu shot but after having my daughter I got my flu shot since then. The flu shot's I've gotten also have the booster in it for the whooping cough.

Having children at home would make a huge difference in my deciding about the flu vaccine. I can't imagine having to take care of children now with the shingles..so for the childrens health and my abilitiy to care for them, I would probably get the flu shot too...

My kids around really around other kids nor are they in school so them getting something they would have to come in contact with and adult that has something or is carrying it on them.
Even if I didn't have kids and I was around just my nephews I would still get one.

Consult a doctor do what it may take, modern medicine are very effective. Doing what you think is right is out of topic, for your not a doctor.

I am asked at the doctor office and I think I received a letter too. Everywhere one goes in stores there are signs saying ----get your flu shot here.
I don't like the idea of getting a flu shot anywhere but a clinic or medical facility but maybe that is wrong thinking....
It's typical of men to avoid flu shots I think..certainly my hubby won't get one..
