Does kicking falling items help relieve the damage sustained from falling?

I would like to hear about your experiences on this one. It might look like a really weird question, but I had this situation happening yesterday: I was texting my friend when my phone slipped from my hands and started speeding towards ground. My first reaction was to try to intercept it with my foot, so I did hit it partially and it got the phone spinning. The phone did finally hit the ground and rolled a few meters away from me. I can tell that phone received some minor scratches on the corners, but in general it survived the crash well.
It's hard to say, what would've happen if the plane would just fall on the ground, it has this Gorilla Glass on it, but I heard stories about it breaking too. Do you have any similar experiences from past and how did hitting the item mid-air affect the result in your case?

Maybe it's just a "lucky kick"? I would rather try and save the item from hitting the ground with my hands than with my foot because I know I will end up just kicking it and making a mess of it. I cannot be certain as to how the projectile of my kick will set my phone sailing or "break" the fall, so I will just be on the safe.

When my phone fell it got minor scratches without me having to kick it. The ground was slanted causing it to slide instead of bounce.

I've caught items from falling, but never hit or kicked. I'd think it would cause a lot more damage unless you kicking that sucker int a circus net er something.
