but it was a breach in delicadeza, so says the commission on elections commisioner about senatorial candidates who are having their biopics shown in television. of course, the two senatorial candidates are grace poe and alan peter cayetano. both will have their life stories shown at maalaala mo kaya? (for the non-tagalog speaking mylotters it literally means 'will you remember?' and it is a popular drama anthology in the country) in successive weeks.
i'm in agreement with the commissioner here. no rules were violated but please do not insult the thinking public that this does not pass as electioneering. hopefully, the other shows showing at the same timeslot trumps these two episodes!!! lol!
so my fellow mylotters, what's your take on the matter? feel free to chime in.
cheers and happy mylotting!!!

yes, it's not illegal because of some technicalities in our laws. but there's some hidden/sacred law that it certainly violates: delicadeza. i agree with you 150% on this. who knows they may be the ones selling their stories on these tv shows. i guess we really need major amendments with our election laws so that some "intelligent" politicians won't use these loopholes just to take advantage of the other candidates.

One more questions, is that really their story or did they add some fictional dramatic stuff so well; will feel sorry for their sob story and give them our sympathy and make us dumb enough to give them out coveted votes. you know what is sad, Lots of people are going to be dumb enough to buy it and vote for them because of some touching biopic on tv.

@CaptAlbertWhisker: MMK is known to exaggerate stories a bit, be it a running candidate's story or just some ordinary story letter sender's.

@ iluvusabado, i think using the word 'intelligent' is giving these politicians too much credit. 'unscrupulous' seems to be the more appropriate word to use.
@captalbertwhisker, the show definitely added more drama to these stories. these politicians might be thinking that more sobs will translate into more votes for them. hahahahahahaha!
@joliefille, mmk isn't off the hook as well. they clearly made themselves an accessory to this crime.. the dumbing down of the filipino electorate.
thanks for particiapating everyone!!!

I also agree there is some kind of malice in the way the show was used. The timing was campaign period already. It is a shortcut to reach many people in intriducing themselves. It was very clever way that they have used this show to present themselves indirectly to their voters. Since the law is silent about this kinds of show it could not be declared said to be violating electioneering law . Wow it seems these two have taken advantage of the absence of a law that would prohibit presenting themselves in the public.
Sen Chiz Escudero is also taking advantage of this by trying to be a co host in Kris Aquino's show from time to time where he does not campaign but his presence there could really bring up vote and sympathy somehow but no one in Comelec is able to do anything to stop him from showing himself in the show.

Well since the traditional campaigning nowadays are quite stiff since there are many laws that prohibit just posting their banners around they have to find ways to circumvent things and finds ways to present themselves to the public and I think they find creative ways to make them known to many. I think for them, this was a loophole in the law that is why they have taken advantage of it as a way to campaign indirectly to the voters.
I heard there is this Fred Lim Movie going on and I think this one is also malicious enough as a form of indirect campaigning.

your raised good points rsa101.
there are definitely loopholes in the current laws that we have hence the candidates find ways to bypass these laws. also, and let's be honest here, these laws aren't strictly imposed so candidates violate these laws with impunity.
i've heard about the alfredo lim movie that is being shot right now with cesar montano as the lead actor. i don't think that it will be shown during the campaign or even during the election period. however, when the press talks about the movie, it will definitely pass as free publicity for the dirty harry of manila.

hi there rsa101.
how are you man? hope that you are fine. malice is definitely a word that comes to mind when taking about politics here in the country. we see that everyday and it is magnified now that the campaign period is underway.
about the point that you mentioned, definitely agree with that as well. any opportunity when these candidates get themselves shown on tv or heard on radio, is a plus for them and free publicity for them.
thanks for participating and happy mylotting!!!

This move by both Cayetano and Poe may have backfired and it might hurt them in the process. They thought that people will vote for them just because they've seen their "moving" life stories. If these politicians can bend rules, imagine what they can do or are already doing while in office. It's a good thing I'm not voting for them.

hi there xtedaxcvg.
i think these episodes showing their lives is meant to make them more 'accessible' to the public. anyway, i do hope that our legislators can make changes in our election laws so things like this don't happen. i doubt that this happens though.

The mere fact that they are their biopics at this point in time is certainly a clear manifestation that they are electioneering. Indeed, they are up to getting noticed and winning the interest of the voting public. Certainly, they are not violating any rule and just violating breach of delicadeza. Ohhhh, almost all if not all politicians have actually forgotten delicadeza for the sake of winning. They would do just about anything to win.
Grace Poe is using her Dad whether she admits or not and should she wins, she owes it all to her Dad. I just hope she will prove herself worthy because if not, FPJ's name will be just put into shame.
Allan Peter Cayetano is also using biopic to promote himself? Hahaha. I bet many politicians will follow through. ![](/Content/images/emotes/lol.gif)

hi there salonga.
well said there, politicians have forgotten delicadeza to get the almighty win in this year's midterm elections.
about candidates using the names of their more famous parents to elicit name recall, i read an article about this and clearly these candidates are using their more familiar names to their advantage. nothing wrong with this per se but what is important is that once they are already in position they shoudl ensure that they will do well and truly serve the people for the good of the country.
lol about your last statement... if politicians do decide to have their biopics shown on television series, i think we will have a bunch of horror stories in our primetime programs!!!

They should have shown their life stories not when the campaign period for the coming election is nearing. Yes, indeed it's a breach of delicadeza.
Maybe they need the money paid for it for the campaign?

hi there simplyd.
i think both alan peter cayetano and grace poe were the ones who paid maala-ala mo kaya to have their lives featured in the program and not the other way around.
plus, i'm sure they have built up their funds to cover their expenses for the campaign.
thanks for participating and happy mylotting!!!

It isn't illegal but it is unfair for other candidates who might not get the chance to have their life stories on air. Allan Cayetano and Grace Poe did enjoy an edge over candidates since many people are watching MMK. it seems unfair for those candidates who won't enjoy the same honors of having their life stories on MMK. I would have preferred in-depth interviews considering that there are lots of candidates we still have to be familiar with.

hi yahnee.
such is the inequality in the world of politics. the rich politicians get their way with regards to media exposure and those that have no funds have to resort to social media to get their share of exposure. tsk!tsk!tsk!
agree with your point about having in-depth interviews. a couple of programs have this type of interviews. i try to watch these interviews so i get to know the candidates and their platform as well as their advocacies.
thanks for participating and happy mylotting!!!

Hello there! =) I would say that is correct, i mean yes, there are no election rules breached, but come on, they should probably just not show it. Are they all taking us for idiots? when their faces are seen in tv shows, it is similar to campaigning!

hello chiyosan!
well, they already did. the network that showed it has a hand on this as well. clearly, they were paid a handsome sum to go along with this. otherwise, they wouldn't give these people the time of the day to have their lives shown on their show.

They did not break any election rule but they sure found a loophole that gave them a great advantage... weeks ago... i decided that i will not vote for those candidates who are using loopholes for early campaign... i was suppose to vote for Grace Poe... but now, i won't... as for AP Cayetano... i never liked him... he is very arrogant and this MMK episode further strengthened my decision not to vote for him...

that loophole certainly was something that these two candidates too advantage. premature campaigning seems to be something that we should get used to until our current election laws are amended.

Yeah I found it suspect when their lives were shown in MMK. Another noticeable thing is it's in a tv station where the Aquinos are very well supported. As we already know from the campaign, the lineup includes Grace Poe and Alan Cayetano.

good point here joliefille.
tv stations should try to be non-partisan when it comes to covering the elections. i'm not so sure about this tv station supporting the incumbent president, i have my doubs about that. i only see thought that this tv station supports those that give thme favors as well.

It's all about money, money, money
, richer candidates seem to always have a huge edge in our country that "delicadeza" seem to take a back seat
, not to mention stations that most of the unthinking public patronize, that's my opinion only![](/Content/images/emotes/devil.gif)

you hit it right in the head louievill.
money, money, and more money dictates the outcome of elections here in the country. richer candidates get more media coverage and more media coverage translates to more votes from the public. the deserving candidates who are short on campaign funds and those that do not have a political party's machinery to back them out are left out to fend for themselves. these deserving candidates do not even get a second look from voters. so sad!!!
agree as well with the comment about tv stations taking advantage of the situation and making this campaign period an all out bidding war

Electioneering? Of course, it is! What is my basis for my opinion? Considering the timing of the show, the atmosphere throughout the country is almost at the campaign period. It is a subtle strategy of campaign. Whoever is the person behind the show sees to it that is goes without violation. But using the 'theology of suspicion' the goes to incite the people to put these person in the office allegedly suitable for them. hopefully! God be good to them.

back to the discussion, yes it is a clear case of electioneering. it was a sneaky attempt to show these episodes a few week before the campaign period officially starts.
'theology of suspicion'... curious term you used here. can you kindly explain it further?
