surely there is a "Java for Dummies" book. Although I have done a bit of Java and it takes a good bit of time to get to grips with.

Actually the world of JAVA programming is very large. You must target your self what you want to learn. For basic you will start with J2SE or Java Standard Edition which includes the core programming of Java. Later on you can proceed to J2EE if you want to creates app for the Enterprise based. Of course if you want to learn to develop apps for mobile apps you still can use the mobile-web based apps version combined with the HTML 5 and CSS 3 knowledge. If you need to go further with native Android development then you must then learn the Android SDK API. Of course there will be more deeper level such as using C++ for NDK development in Android but well that's a different story I guess.

My opinion to you is for learning Java, there is no need to buy a book. You can have the full version of Java learning programs are there in the Internet itself. There will be so many websites dedicated to to Java as it is an open source. Also you can download the IDEs necessary for doing Java on your machine. All these stuffs will help you to learn Java from the basics.
