Watching movies in a theatre-Are you still doing it?

In my young days this was an event, a grand occasion and we would all look forward to our cousins coming home for vacation. Then the planning would start. “What movies can we watch?”
My aunt will tell us stories of films which she had watched recently and adding her own touches she would make it such a colorful time. We will all sing and dance and play games too guessing names of films etc..,
Watching movies was very inexpensive. There were no multiplexes and we would see films only in some theatres where there were no air conditioners too. We would sweat like pigs but I remember only the positive enjoyment this ritual afforded us. Later, after I grew up and got married it was still an event and one to look forward to
Now it is a different experience and though I do not watch movies in a theatre frequently, the odd occasion is an important one. I do enjoy it.But I am quite choosy these days. Earlier, if a movie was bad we won’t regret it so much but now I would rather choose mine and if need be watch many of them on television.
Do you like watching movies in a theatre?

I do, i like watching movies in the theater but then life is so hard nowadays and money is so hard. The movie theaters have alrdy raised their prices that sometimes it seems impractical to watch something in the theater when you can watch it on DVD cheaper and at the own comfort of your homes. You can even rewind it if you missed anything and can watch the movie as many times as you want. I know that it is bad and selfish and i should be supporting the movie industry by going to the theater but we've all got to be practical sometimes. Sometimes you have to save yourself first before you save your country's economy.

This word has another meaning "A building, especially a movie theater or dwelling, with multiple separate units.".
In our city there are quite a few big malls and there are restaurants, different kinds of shops, and also a movie hall within a mall compound.there would be many buildings in the same compound and one wing can hold a theatre too. This is a multiplex.

Sorry for this question, but i dont know what a multiplex is. Incorrect me if I'm wrong but i think it is a music tape where in you can modify the way the song is being played. It can be converted to a minus 1 but i am not sure. I am not techy.

Hi Kala!
We (me and my better half) are like you . We do not feel like going to theatre specially to watch a movie.
You are very right that now a days it has become a costly affair to watch a movie in multiplex. We have dish antennae with set top box and we could record movies and we could see those movies in 'High Definition' mode, as per our convenience and even in parts.
Now a days a new movie is aired just after 2-3 months on one or other TV channel, so we get to see movies of our choice.
Recently, on our anniversary we (me and my wife only) went for a movie after a long long time and we saw 'Vishwaroop' by Kamal Hassan. I liked the movie but she did not like it as the subject matter of the movie was 'terrorism'. However, we had to part with nearly Rs.1000/- for lunch + movie.
Moreover, there are limited number of movies which are worth watching in a multiplex spending such a hefty amount so we skip this mode of entertainment.
Have a great day!

Haa! Who do we see here after a long time! Belated wishes for a happy anniversary Deepak! I must see" Viswaroopam. "
I would , of course, prefer to see it in Tamil. In olden days this was one sure way of entertaining our guests and spending vacation. There was no television then.
As you said there are a very few movies that are worth watching in a theatre. When it is an 'anniversary special' then the occasion warrants it and even if the movie is not up to the mark, the outing serves the purpose and makes it a celebration.

I love to watch movies at the theaters. But you know, I am ill and dont have enough funds most of the days. So I am forced to watch them on the Computer. Thanks to my DVD provider and also YouTube. But that doesnt mean, I dont wait and dont go to see any in the theaters. I am an SRK fan and make it a point to watch his movies in the theaters at least once (I mention this once because during college and good days - when the tickets here were really affordable and economical - I have watched some movies more than 10 times at the theaters).
The last that we saw at the theaters was Barfi and I was so much in love with it, that I even planned to go to Kolkata (500 Kilometers away from here) just because they were showing it on the INOX. (We didnt have an INOX that time here, but today we have one). And I plan to go to see Chennai Express next - again starring SRK and Deepika.

That was an interesting response.Watching movies in multiplexes is an expensive thing and we definitely think twice but if it is for a particular actor or director then we don't mind. Hope the new film Chennai express comes up to your expectations.

Hi kala, how are you? Yeah i still love to watch movies in theatres, it is something thrill to watch in cinema hall. I really enjoy watching movies with my family members, whenever festivals comes especially pongal and dassara we have many holidays so we all family members including my brother and sister family members all together we plan to for a movie any family type movie we like to watch and we spend that day happily outside.
When i am in college days we used to go to morning show movies since we are in Hyderabad always we will have some or the political issues and they used to call for bandh then what we can do. But enjoying a movie with family members and friends is little bit different.
Have a nice day.

Movies get to greater taste when they are watched in theater. Perhaps , what I think is some movies are only tasty when seen in theater.. like KING KONG. Three years ago, when I used to live in a good city that had theaters, I along with family used to visit a theater at least per month to catch the fantastic movies and this was our regular routine as long as we stayed in that city. That was of course great moment of enjoyment together as a family. But now we are shifted to another town which has no theaters around it and hence we are bound to satisfy our thirst of movies only by watching movies in television or computer. But , I am sure soon I will be settled in a city where I will be again able to enjoy the moments of theater.

Yes. Watching movie in a theater is such a wonderful experience for me in childhood and
also now. The ambiance of the hall, the sound effect and the big screen, oh! it is
superb to have that kind of experience. The most important time is the interval time,
Children asking what I want and with chocolate popcorn (only time allowed in theater as
I am diabetic) which is added preference to go to theater, samosa and soft drink (though
only little is allowed as the quota of sweet is taken by chocolate popcorn), I love watching
movies in Theater. But the number is limited to two per year for very good movies like
HARRY POTTER, Avatar, a 3D movie which you can enjoy most only in the theater and Dan Brown
movies like Da Vinci Code and Angel and Demon.

I honestly haven't seen a movie in a theater since I was pregnant with my son (he is two now so it's probably been about 2 and a half years). I just haven't had the time or opportunity to. Now we just get Netflix and watch them at home. I would like to eventually go see one in theater. Our movie theater is a small one but it's fairly cheap and plays newer movies. The only downside is that they only play the bigger movies that come out like twilight or harry potter type of stuff. If it's not going to be a huge blockbuster we pretty much have to go to one of the bigger theaters that charge more. We have been talking about going to see one sometime soon and leaving our son with my mom. Other wise I have a feeling the next movie I see in the theater will be kid oriented when my son is older. I like the feeling of seeing a movie in a theater. The bigger theaters have the stadium seating, but the theater where I live just has the normal seating they had before the stadium seating. We used to have a really old movie place that only showed one movie but it had an old time feel to it and I liked it. They closed it down though and they ended up turning it into a bar. Basically I watch movies at home because of convenience, but I like the theater. I used to go see a movie almost every weekend at one point.

I really can't. He doesn't sleep well half the time. He will only sleep well in his crib. He is also extremely unpredictable and and temperamental and I never know when he is going to start screaming. It's a nice idea though but one that probably wouldn't work in my situation.

I too feel that watching movies in the theater is a thing in the past and not just because it is getting more and more expensive but also because I think the quality of movies that have been coming out has been declining. There just really hasn't been too many movies that have come out recently that have really motivated me to want to pay so much to watch them.
Another thing I don't like about movie theaters today is the fact that some movies only come in 3-D now. Just because they are 3-d we have to pay a lot more money and most of the time the 3-d in the movie isn't even worth it. I had to pay like twenty seven dollars just for tickets alone to go and see Hansel and Gretel in 3-d and it definitely wasn't worth it.
Pretty much the only time I go to the movie theater now is when there is a movie that looks good enough for me to want to see it on a huge screen. Other than that I just don't really think that it is that worth it to go the movie theaters anymore.

When it gets more and more expensive then we naturally prioritize our list and this takes a back seat.Entertainment cannot gain precedence over essentials. On the other hand if it were a relatively simpler thing then we would not even mind it if the movie were not that good.

The last movie I saw in a theater...Kaho Na Pyaar hai...lol. So that you know how long ago I saw a movie in a theater..lol
And before that...Swathimuthyam...and before that Shankarabharanam.
I was never great fan for going out for movies. I am basically sit at home type of person. But in the hostel, girls would boast how many movies they saw in their vacations, and I would have no list to mention. So it was mandatory to watch a few. But I hated that getting ready in a hurry, waiting for rickshaws, getting tense whether we will get the tickets, and rushing to the theater before others to stand in the queue so that we could get tickets in time...it used to be hot...standing in that queue for 3 to six show..I remember watching Deewar, and Zameer after standing for more than an hour in the hot sun...for something as dumb as tickets..lol
No...I am happy with my television. I dont like movies that are not realistic. So I am getting my share of English movies, and crime profiles.

Hi Vandana! I am writing this comment very late. One thing that I have noticed is that when there is good company, we like the movie itself more than what it calls for..Otherwise, it is a hassle to go and watch a movie standing in queues for hours or coming back with the 'Houseful' board thrust on our faces.

In my school days, i used to bunk classes and used to go to watch movies in theater's. I still remember those days, how i run after buses and climb upto roof tops of them in the summer days. It was great fun going with friends. So was it in college days and university days. But now a days techonology is so advanced with the help of internet and latest cellphones. One can watch movies on their cellphones. Then why to waste money in theaters.
What are your views.

In college things are totally different and you would have loved the company.THings are different when you grow up.Nowadays it is very expensive but there are some films which are specially meant to be seen in theatres. So, I feel once in a while we can indulge in it.

I don't know when was the last time when I had watched a movie in a theatre. Now I see the theatres in my hometown are experiencing a falldown in their business. Most of us like to watch movies on the internet or tv without going to a theatre and standing there in a queau waiting for their turn.I too now watch movies either either on the internet or tv.

I have not been to a theatre in years. The last movie I watched was in a multiplex and I vouched never more to watch any movies in a multiplex. We had a little kid with us. We were all excited with popcorn and cola. The sound was too much for my liking. It pounded exactly where my heart was. I decided to leave but that little fellow reprimanded me saying now that I have come I cannot leave
So much for watching a movie in a theatre. As a matter of fact I hardly watch movies and for that I blame myLot!

It is not the case with me.I would definitely watch a Rajinikant film in a theatre.I like the stereo sound and effect also.It actually adds to my enjoyment; in olden days this sound , especially the violent fights and that too in a sweaty theatre would give me a headache. Now, I choose my films and it is not too bad.
look at the little brat!he should have allowed you to leave.

I bet you too would have wanted to leave kala. The sound was much too much.Knowing you I don't think you would have tolerated that sound.
My proper movie experience in theatres was after I got married. As a kid we were not allowed to watch movies. The only thing we watched were documentaries in our school.

I stopped watching movies on movie houses or theater 13 years ago. I do love watching quality and well-plotted movies but I do it at home. I have now so many options to choose from. I get to see free full movies via YouTube using my 31 inches tv and a HDMI connector. Also, I have a DVD player so I can just buy a DVD, but that too is expensive so I just borrow. My sister also loves downloading most recent movies so I just ask her for a copy. Sometimes, when I don't feel like opening my computer or playing the DVD, I just look at HBO or through other TV channels.
I have limited free time and I unwind by watching. But most of the time, I get to sleep at the middle of the movie and would just have to turn-off the tv set when I wake up.
The reason why I don't watch in movie theaters? Well, one is the exorbitant cost of the ticket. Two, I don't like what I see in the dark. Three, I don't have the time to do so and I don't like spending time on lining up for a ticket. Four, expense pile up when you watch in theater -- you have to buy popcorns or drinks or anything. Five, I want to watch with our children around us.
So many reasons eh?

Thanks for this discussion, kala
you reminded me of old days, i was in Matriculation in 1962, there was film Jhomroo by Kisore kumar in one of the 3 talkies, i went and saw this film though Matric exam was going on, for balcony class fare was 1.25 only
Now all the halls are closed and converted to wedding and reception halls.
During our recent stay we planned to go for 3D movie in Hyderabad, but could not go.

Hi,
I can no longer remember the time what was the last time I went to the cinema but I do remember the last film I saw there was The Scorpion King starring The Rock. In the advent of the DVD player, watching a movie was as easy as sitting down in the living room or bedroom and popping in the disk. I don't mind if it is only on a 24-inch screen with a sound that can hardly be heard but it is still a movie all the same. It is more convenient than traveling 25 kilometers to the city, spend for the fare, the ticket and the snacks, not to mention the traffic, pickpockets and all the inconveniences in between.

I still go to movie theaters to watch films. In fact, it was just last night when me and my friends watch a movie. Sometimes it can be relaxing going there. We are also watching at home. But we see to it that we would sometimes go and see a film in the cinema, with nachos and popcorns with us.

I've been watching a lot of movies but not in theatre anymore because my husband downloads a lot of movie and tv series so we're having a movie marathon on weekends.
It's so much fun than sitting in theatre since we can choose to stay in bed or on the floor if we have foods inside the room. We can pause it if we want to go to toilet or do something for a moment. Besides, there are movies that you thought are really good but at the end you will realize they're not worth the money you are paying.
