I love being an independent traveler

I like to book a flight to somewhere in the world then travel around that region. Typically I stay in a number of different places like in cities, near beaches and in the countryside. I like self catering accommodation and then I can shop at the local supermarkets. I enjoy staying in low cost guest houses that are clean and simple. I love it when I can stay in unusual accommodation like a tree house in Belize. How independent are your travels? Which accommodations have you enjoyed staying in most? Have you eaten out or shopped at local supermarket?

I admire your independence. I can never travel like you do just because I am very terrible in directions. I do want to be able to do something like that someday, that would be an adventure. I guess I need to muster enough courage to be able to do that. Whenever I travel, it is always with my husband or friends. I do have fun and I enjoy it anyway so I guess it's not too bad.

Thanks for your wonderful response. It is lovely that you have done some trips with your husband and friends. I think you might be able to find your way better if you get a detailed map. Maybe try borrowing some travel guide books from your local library with decent maps inside them. Good luck with your future travels.

I am also an independent traveler and I love to plan my own trips. I make my own decisions about transportation, accomodation, sightseeing etc. I also decide how much time I want to spend at each place. If I buy a package tour I don't have the same kind of freedom because other people have already made most of those decisions. At first I decide which places I want to visit and what time I want to travel and then I book my transportation and my accomodation. I love unusual accomodation and I last time I travelled I got the chance to stay in a very unusual hotel in Vietnam. The hotel is called Crazy House. The buildings look like a fairytale and it is was a fascinating experience to visit the different parts of the hotel. We stayed in a room called Land Eagle room and the main decoration in the room was a huge eagle. When I travel I eat out and I also shop at the local supermarkets, I usually combine both things. I think it is interesting to visit the local supermarkets and it gives me the chance to taste some of things that we can't buy in my own country.

Thanks for your excellent response. I have very much enjoyed reading your discussions in which you describe your travel experiences. I love the sound of Crazy House in Vietnam. In South America I had trouble reading ingredients labels. I ended up buying almond nuts with garlic. I eat a vegan diet and have to be careful when buying in a supermarket overseas. I like to be able to buy soya drink.

The wonders of travelling alone, you can go where you want, do what you want, stay where you want and the list goes on, I much prefer to travel alone. It is also far more adventurous as I found out when I boarded a plane on my own for the first time, I am not a keen flier and had never flown on my own, so it was a courageous thing for me to do. I flew to Rhodes, I had never been there before, it was easy to get around and they were English speaking, so I had no trouble there, The accommodation was satisfactory, even better they had a swimming pool. I took myself on a few trips by bus and coach which I thoroughly enjoyed. The only thing I have to say that I don't like when travelling alone, is eating alone, I don't like dining out or eating in the hotel on my own, guess I am a bit self conscious about that.

I wish I could be like you. But unfortunately, I can never be an independent traveller. My parents will never let me to travel alone and I am not allowed to go out with my friends also. I am only allowed to go with family and my family does not have anyone who is interested in travelling and exploring new lives and lives out of our place. I always feel like travelling alone to places and explore everything about the place and live among the people over there. But it has never happened at all and I don't think that it will even happen.
