I was watching this movie (Love it) earlier with my 9 year old daughter and my wife when my daughter asked me, "Papa, if ever this happens to us, who will you save, me or Mama?" I was thinking for like 15 minutes when she again asked me the question. I told her that I will try to save the both of them. But she said the wooden door can only hold one person. I was undecided... then she said that I don't know if it makes sense. She Told me, "Papa, I think you will choose me." I asked back, "Why?" And she said, "You can always look for a new wife." We laughed but her Mama asked her, "and who will you choose between me and you father in case we be placed in the same situation in the ?" My daughter then replied, "None." We asked why. She said, "I cannot swim so I will not be able to save either of you." Out of the mouth of a child, always the truth. But after the movie, I came to ponder... what if? I probably will be saving my daughter for it will be the wish of my wife... but, then again, the possibility of saving both of them is..... my head is spinning! Hard choice to make!

What a discussion you had.Talking about the law of nature, the young life is seen as more valuable than the old one. From the religious point of view, both lives are equal. What would happen in real life?I believe you two would try to save your child and you would lose your lives because this is what usually happens in wartime.Parents lose their lives while saving their kids. As for the part of finding a new wife and mom, same for the little girl: I can have other children , can't I?That part sounds a bit egocentric by the way.

You are practically right. That is why at the time my daughter asked me, the first thing that came to mind was saving both of them but as the question asked only for one, then the choice must be made. I cannot choose for I love both of them and to lose any of them will be like dying too... in reality, especially in wars, protecting them I think is the main priority. Saving all of them and not only one is the objective.... the choices we make, even just the words we speak makes a big impact on children and that is a fact!

I will tell you from reading this, you have one heck of an awesome and intelligent daughter. This is really head spinning, as others have noted. I think that you can be proud of your daughter for being very astute and curious enough to ask such a mature question. Kids do seem to know how to ask questions that can toss us off our guard, alright.

I really love the movie too. Your daughter is really smart, and funny and its a very nice thought that she loves spending with her parents. I also have a 4 month old baby girl now, I'm very excited by the time that she could probably talk soon. It's really hard to choose between the two, you love both of them and they are both important. But you know what, I agree with you that your wife would probably wish to save your daughter, most of us mothers are really wiling to sacrifice just to save our children's life. That's the unconditional love of the parents.
