I keep seeing articles on face book and click like if your against horse meat in food. What i'd like to know is do restaurants and people really use horse meat in food? Is this true and if so who found and how they did they find out? If a place is using horse meat they wont tell you. One article Said Mcdonald's was using horse meat and i'm not sure if that's even true. Who even thought this could be happening in order to investigate and report on it? I don't believe everything i read or see on the internet so i was wondering if anyone else had heard about this like on the news or something. Is this true and if so who thought there could be horse meat in anything and decided to find out and report it since the people that could be using it wouldn't tell anyone.

I live in England and there is news horse meat has been found in some foods sold in supermarkets. Meat eaters in my home country do not choose to eat horse meat and would imagine they would be horrified to find out they ate horse meat instead of cow (beef). I am glad to say that I eat a vegan diet. I check ingredients to make sure the food is suitable for me. Dog and cat food is worryingly unregulated. I have two dogs.

I wouldn't eat horse meat because it sounds disgusting and the horse is such a friendly animal and cute. I couldn't eat an animal like that. Just like i couldn't eat dog or cat like they do in some countries. Tho if i were starving like some people are in the world maybe i'd eat it then because when you are starving you will eat anything to live.

In our place, it is said that it is mixed in canned corned beef but what difference does it make? It is meaty and edible.

Actually I think the question is more when did it become wrong to eat horse meat? I mean people in countries all over the world eat horse meat it's not that big of a deal except to Americans who seem to have become squeamish to EVERYTHING! It's embarrassing really. I think it is wrong for companies to pass off one meat as another I can see people being mad at that but as for what kind of meat it is that's just silly. I know in the past it was wrong to eat a young working horse for the reasons of needing the animal for work but now unless your Amish I don't think that applies to most Americans, or Europeans.

eating horse meat is a big deal in Britain to eat horse meat as well, i think you have to look at it from the idea that horses are like pets. this means that really you only eat them as a last resort such as an army running out of food would eat their horses to keep them going. i think horses are seen as being intelligent, generally the biggest problem with horse meat showing up in products might not be the company who sells it but he supplier looking to cut down on costs.

@ gifts I think mos Americans don't even realize that horse meat is an option to eat unless they have been abroad. @ Greaper and Mike, the labeling and lying by companies at all stages of the game are a big problem here not just in what but how the what was raised or what was shot into it. Not to mention not telling people about spliced genes and what not.

Well supposedly the meat was genetically tested, so yeah, it appears to be a genuine story. what I'd like to know is what's so sacred about horse meat? Why can we eat cows and sheep, but not horses?

That's it. The uproar here is kind of about the wrong thing. Horse meat! how awful! When the real issue is food standards. things should be labelled, and if a person has an objection to horse meat, at least they'd know and be able to avoid it.

In my country there are butcher shops that sell horse meat. It is cheaper than veal and as full of proteins as the other. Many people prefer it. I don`t like it or haven`t eaten it many times except as dry meat. THere, I`d rahter have salted horse meat as a snack. It is a cultural thing, I suppose, as you talk about it as if it were something terrible.

Horse not too impressed by the horsemeat rumours - Norwegian fjord horse sticking its tongue out
I suppose that's exactly what happened since you posted this, some decided to check :-) Scandals all over Europe about horse-meat in lasagne, pizza and even meat-balls from IKEA! I'm not too bothered that it is horse-meat, I think it's more worrying that it's meat that they don't know the origin of. It can be nasty stuff in veal or mutton too.

I haven't heard that news. If that were true I think it's not right. Horse must not be eaten. I think that is not their purpose. They are used for transportation, chivalry, and sports. It's kind of cruelty when one kills a horse for its meat.:-(

It depends on the culture, edvc. In my country, there are people who eat horse meat. And I have eaten Guinea pigs and they are yummy. Cruelty is ppresent when you kill an animal just for the sport. It is more cruel when you kill a human being.

Horsemeat is eaten all over the world, as you can see in the graphic in this article: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/horse-meat-lasagne-factory-revealed-1595234 Here in Italy there are butchers who deal soley with horsemeat. It is reccomended for those with lw blood pressure. The problem arises when certain firms do not give the correct description of the ingredients in certain dishes, either omitting horsemeat or calling it something else. That is what is wrong. There is absolutely nothing wrong with horsemeat if it has gone through the usual checks that all produce should go through before it becomes available for human consumption.

Hi Redredrose and welcome to my lot. I don't know of any restaurant that is serving horse meat if I did I would report them after all who wants to eat their best friend ? I did live in LA CA and this restaurant I ate at several times was closed doen for serving cat and rat meat........YUK........................ I don't know if I ever ate cat or rat meat but I did eat at that restaurant several times before it was caught with cat and rat meat in their kitchen. I wouldn't tell that to anyone but I was so disgusted that I haven't eaten at any restaurant since then. That was in the early 90's.

I've heard similar stories, but I have not read any good proof the support this issue. If it was at all true, then it should have been really in the headlines, right? I think this is just another dirty scheme of competitors.
