Did anyone else happen to catch this? It was a bit frightening, considering we were told that the asteroid making a close flyby would not be dangerous to us here below.

Saw the headline, but I was busy doing something else, so didn't read the story. Yup, a bit scary. Saw one on Facebook today, something about a big asteroid being nature inquiring as to the state of the space program.

I saw a video of it hitting that someone posted on FB. If you have my posts turned on you should have the video on your timeline, as I reposted it.

From the Daily Mail Sonic Boom Caused By Meteorite Hurtling Above Russian Town At 33,00 MPH Smashes Buildings And Injures 1,00 People Before The Space Rock Crashes Into Frozen Lake - A terrifying meteorite shower left 1,000 people injured, buildings devastated and the mobile network wiped out when it hit Russia. Brightly burning rocks could be seen for miles as they crashed and one bystander described it 'like a scene from the Armageddon movie.' The meteorite landed in a lake near Chebarkul, a town in the neighbouring Chelyabinsk region. The city of Chelyabinsk, 900 miles east of Moscow and close to the Kazakhstan border, took the brunt of the super sonic impact.

I saw that this morning. They said it didn't have anything to do with the asteroid today. I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or a good thing. If it's a part of the asteroid, then we can breathe a sigh of relief when it's past, but if it really isn't... what else will the sky throw at us? Signs of the times...

Yeah, here's the kicker, they didn't know about this one. Scientists knew about the asteroid, but this one surprised them.

The best photos & videos are here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2279020/Russian-meteor-shower-Sonic-boom-caused-meteorite-hurtling-Chebarkul-injures-1-000-people.html It is emphasised that there was no connection between the close approach of the asteroid and this meteor. The asteroid is moving from south to north and the meteor approached from the east and, in any case, the meteor strike occurred 12 hours earlier.

Ten tons of rock (which is the estimate of the size of the thing) seems quite large when it hits you but it's actually just a speck of dust in terms of what is randomly circling the sun. Even if one were looking in that direction with a powerful telescope, you probably wouldn't see it until it were too late!

Thanks for the link. Kinda nerve wracking that they knew about the one, and were taken by surprise by this one that hit.

The key is they didn't know about this one. The one they know about, likely won't even skim the atmosphere. They don't know. G-d is in control, not us humans. We are so arrogant in our feeling of control, and oh we have government to protect us. Whatever! If G-d so desires he can wipe out any one of us, or all of us, and leave nothing but a greasy spot where we used to be.

I think I may have been wrong about that. I thought there was two, but it appears I am mistaken.

See that's what I was thinking. I can't seem to find a conclusive answer, but I thought I was reading they were watching one, and this other one just surprised them. We humans think we are just so smart, and oh how great government will protect us. Such a joke. If G-d wants to flatten our planet, he could do so with not even a flick from his pinky finger. "We have to save the Earth!" Bull crap... we couldn't save an Ant short of G-d allowing us to do so.

Yes, there was the asteroid science has been watching, that skimmed our atmosphere at about 17,000 miles up, and this one they did NOT anticipate that came from a different direction. They were caught off guard with this one. There is a prophecy in Revelation that states in the last days a mountain will fall into the sea. I've always wondered if that was a meteor strike.

Yes I watched this new from TV,it is very horrible, but we all know that Russia is a country who very good at in the missile field,so why not they just hit that meteorite by their missile?

In astronomical terms, it was a bit to close for comfort, it you know what I mean. Our western coast is, by space standards...only a hop, skip and jump from Sibera. But nonetheless, I feel horrible for the people affected by this, ANYWHERE. If there is a huge belt of them out there close, this may be only the beginning?

They didn't expect that meteorite at all and weren't able to detect it until the meteorite entered the atmosphere. I doubt that even a missile would've been able to hit it and if it did, it would've caused a public controversy, seeing how Russia was a leader in nuclear weapons. It would've been worse, seeing how the meteorite thankfully landed in a sparsely populated area and not in New York or any other large cities and didn't cause that many severe injuries.

Yeah i heard about it last night. The thing that bothers me about it is what if on one of these meteorites that breaks through our atmosphere has some sort of element in it that humans have never been exposed to before, and now its in our air!

I do believe that the elements that make up the universe are pretty uniform, what we have here is close to what is out there. I may be wrong.

At least it's not radioactive - researchers announced that there was no change in nuclear radiation levels nearby the place where the meteorite exploded.

I just saw this in the news, and well honestly speaking it was scary and for a time i did even question mysellf and the whole "world" as to the validity of the claims, and thought, maybe it is really coming soon - the end that is. haha that was just some silly thought actually.

Of course the asteroid and the meteor were totally unrelated; it was just a coincidence that a meteor of that size impacted the Earth around the time of the asteroid flyby. Many meteors enter the Earth's atmosphere every day but most are small and burn up in the atmosphere or may be a little larger and make it through but come down over the ocean or uninhabited areas or are small enough or slow enough to not cause damage. If I am recalling right there are two regularly meteor events that occur every year in the skies of Earth and most of the meteors in those showers burn up in the atmosphere even though there are hundreds of them. Of course there was another large one in Siberia around 1908 in an unpopulated area that did a lot of damage to forest, etc. Also, there is a large meteor crater in Arizona from about a thousand years ago; if memory serves me right. I have visited that crater in Arizona. Of course the Moon is covered with meteor craters since there is no atmosphere to burn them up before they hit.

I saw footage of this on the news. It was unbelievable. Something so huge and so immense passing over the earth so closely. I can only imagine how people were affected whenthey saw this. The aftershocks did their own damage as well. I hope there are no repeats of this kind of incident.

From what others have said about a documentary they've seen, there are LOTS of asteroids out there. I'm with you though, sure do pray none find their way here!

It seems very strange that the biggest meteorite in 100 years fell on the same that that biggest asteroid ever known to do so came between Earth and the Moon. Signs in the sky are one of the signs of the apocalypse. Things happen in the sky all the time so this presumably means something exceptional and I think this counts. Also the Pope had announced his resignation a few days earlier and there's a prophecy that the next pope will be the last. And we thought we didn't have anything to worry about after that Mayan thing didn't happen! I really think we should be on the look out for other things. Of course the best place to look for signs of the apocalypse in the Middle East. Arab spring! Civil war in Syria! Iran threatening to get nuclear weapons. That doesn't look good either!

For those of us who pay attention to such things it is ominous. For the rest of the world content to be blissfully ignorant of such things...not so much. They will find a psychological way to make it not matter.

I think that GOD is trying to tell scientists something. That they can watch all they want, and do all the tests they want, and still they will be set at awe. This really is sad, and funny at the same time. Scientists really think that they know so much. GOD is great, and they would do well to remember that, or at least acknowledge it.

I saw the news about a little after the lunch hour. The impact was captured by CCTV cameras from inside certain establishment. The people inside are obviously shocked with the impact. It was really a close call for some. I even saw one steel door getting blown off the frames and inside the warehouse or building. It was pretty scary and I can't imagine the bang it created upon contact on earth.

I saw videos taken from what appeared to be traffic cameras and police car cameras. Also, a pic of a building in smoking ruins. I'm so thankful no one was killed.

I have watched the video on cbsnews, and I show the meteorite falls clearly. It is a very rare phenomenon. I think there would be one or some meteorite falls aftershock. I also have read a topic that described the research of NASA about meteorite that said there will be meteorite falls to the earth in the near future, because there are hundreds or thousands meteorites orbiting near the earth and getting closer to earth. Probably there would be some aftershock meteorite falls, but in other areas of the earth. But I hope it to not occur. What we can do is only praying. It is a horrible phenomenon.

My saw the news first and I thought she was putting me on at first. What scares me is that we don't have the capability of tracking pieces of space junk like this at this point. Had it entered the atmosphere at a steeper angle it would have been a lot closer to the ground before exploding and the damage would have been substantially worse.
