Car repairs are so much money!

When it rains, it pours. I took the car to a garage around the corner to be inspected and to get an oil change. Well, it turns out that the front sway bar is cracked, grease is spraying all over the front left wheel, the rear brakes are metal on metal and we have to have the broken driver's window motor replaced before it can be inspected! So I got the oil changed, and we're bringing the car in late Sunday to be repaired on Monday. Funny thing is that what we thought was bad (the mass intake airflow sensor) WASN'T bad, just the gasket for it was loose! They fixed that for free, but everything is going to cost $900! Glad that we have the money to have the car repaired-and the garage is only a block away!

Scorpiobabes, I do not know which country are you from but this is too much cost for car to get repaired. In This much money out here in India we could get the engine work done and got probably got major engine problems in many cars. I have often seen that once you take the car to garage then only you get to know how many things are bad in the car.

I'm in the United States, and this is quite reasonable, especially when you consider all of the problems that are wrong with the car. The car is from 2000, and emission requirements here in the US require strict requirements that are not seen in your country.

Ok we do not see that old cars here in Delhi city. Some may be but not many. And as far as pollution is concerned we have same as in Europe at present. So I think it is same here too.

That's big money. My husband and I were thinking of buying a car but because of the maintenance issue, we are still thinking about it. If the maintenance thing will give us debts we would rather take the public transportation. I am glad you have a budget for maintenance and repair.

Actually, we didn't have a budget for this; this is money that my boyfriend received from an insurance settlement. But we'll be definitely be putting some money aside after this!

I always experience a sense of impending doom when I take the car in for servicing. Something that works fine is always 'dangerous' and will require the exchange of a substantial sum of money to rectify. Said item usually is very nondescript too. When I fork out hundreds I want to see bling! Lots of it! LOL. Enjoy your roadworthy car.

I feel better than usual about this guy-the price was mostly for parts! But this scares me because the car isn't getting everything necessary done, just what had to absolutely be done for inspection and to prevent the front end from locking up. I detest older vehicles, but this is worse because the entire brand was retired by General Motors. I agree with you-if I'm spending this kind of money, I want bling-or a monster truck that I can jump curbs in!

I hear you!! My car is having issues with the radiator and keeping fluid in it. It needs to pass inspection before the end of the month! Now my truck has decided to do the same thing!! I just had her radiator and hoses changed two years ago!!!! Normally this would be the month that I would have extra money, but now.....instead of having extra money, I OWE money!! :'( stupid government!

I have gone through such a situation last year when my car just stopped without any sign and I had to spend a few dollars extra to repair my vehicle by mechanic. But after my friends suggestion to learn some DIY to make most general engine repair by myself, my maintenance budget have eventually gone down. I usually prefer to read some engine repair tips from which have helped me a lot in maintaining and repairing my car by myself.

My boyfriend has requested I find a Chilton's repair manual-I hope I can find one that's affordable. I think that's what we're going to do-my SO used to fix jet engines in the USAF years ago; surely a car from 2000 will be easier!

That sounds quite high for the things you mentioned. I am glad that we have a good mechanic that fixes ours for a reasonable price.

The parts were what cost so much-the labor was very reasonable. But having a 12-year-old car makes parts cost that much more too. He did show me the old parts, so I know that he did actually replace them. I DETEST this car, but this was my boyfriend's choice. Next time, I'm getting to pick it.

Hubby does most of the labor on the cars himself, so we are fortunate. However, parts are still expensive. He tries to get suppliers into parts wars with each other.

That's why I miss my dad-he always did my vehicle maintenance. And I had a friend who was a mechanic back in Jersey who always checked my car out for me. Most of my guy friends were mechanically inclined-but it's been 20 years since I was involved with someone who could fix my car!

car is a luxury item,so we really have to keep it, because the price is expensive sparepart past

I have a medical condition that prevents me from walking long distances, especially carrying something, so a car is more of a necessity than a luxury item. And my boyfriend works many miles away, where taking public transportation would require a three hour ride-and he works the time that it isn't available anyway.
