What is the best way to handle a Black-mailer?

Hi friends. i was watching a movie just a couple of hours ago and saw a guy blackmail an old woman for money because he knows one of her secrets. Come to think of it, it happens in every other story too. More often than not, the film's director usually kills the blackmailer character which leads to the following question. Is killing the black-mailer the only option in real life? Is there no way around? Is the secret is so twisted up that murdering sounds a much better option than coming clean?

I am not sure if there is a secret code among directors/writers about certain issues but I have also noticed that this specific story ends the same. Maybe because they would want to tell the people that an evil act can never win over a good one. You will also notice movies whose story revolves around a couple wherein one of them falls in love with another person. And eventhough that the other person would show such kindness and good character, the story always end up as the woman either going back to the husband or just remains single. Never did it happen that a married woman would end up with the lover.
