I just read this crap from the news today
http://www.asianscientist.com/academia/philippine-deped-removes-science-and-health-in-grade1-2-classes-2012/
it talked about abolishing SCIENCE in Grades 1 and 2. I believe this is crap, i believe it is essential to teach Science as early as grades 1 and 2 to nurture further their minds, to have this curiosity factor in kids, for them to yearn more knowledge. The one who did this is quite stupid i believe, he might have hated science while he was still in school. Plus they are underestimating the minds of little children.

It will be popular among children : it does not seems that Science will be replaced by another subject, so they will have more time for playtime. Taken from another point of view, to play the devil's advocate, it is not because a child will not learn science very young that he will not be a scientist. What do you remember of your first class of science ? It was an early learning class not very useful in my mind. The truth is that many subjects are only taught at college, like laws, medicine, and several scientific domains, and that starting something new when you are more mature is not a handicap...

well i guess i have to be quite different about this one, the moment i learned the parts of plants and the different planets when i was in grade 1 sparked that love of reading more about it for me.. me and well most of my friends would often go to the library at that age and we would look at pictures of the planets and animals.. i could even remember us reading about those stuff rather than playing. Yes it might sound nerdy but somehow we are nerds or geeks lol but it did nurture us patience, diligence to learn.. and that drive to learn more. Somehow it was a great factor for us growing up and for one of my friend it was the reason why is a doctor now too.

You learned the name of planets and it was just an initiation to astronomy, but after this initiation astronomy is only taught in college today, at least here. In the 18th century it was taught to kids, and I don't think it created many professional vocations due to the way it was taught : a succession of annoying abstract formulas. I don't doubt that an initiation to science has to be done, but starting it at 6 or at 8 does not make a big difference for me. Anyways, parents have more influence than teachers in the choice of a profession by their children (35% vs only 20%).

i guess we do look at things differently On our part there were no more of those astronomy stuff in college though.. college is more like on what you want to major and nothing of those other stuff.
anyways, i still feel teaching kids science as early as grade 1 is important especially in a country like my country where books are not easily available to children especially in public schools.. kids in public schools have less access to the internet and even to the print media, imagine what would happen to them if teaching this stuff will lessen in school plus there are like a big majority of parents especially in the public schools who also barely know these information...

that will be terrible if they think about removing science. it's one of my daughter's favorite subjects. she is in third grade and has been liking science ever since kindergarten. i don't know what they are talking about, kids love to do all the little experiments.

The way that the article is worded certainly suggests that "Science" as a subject is not considered 'child-friendly'. Of course, this is complete rubbish. Children always have been and always will be intensely interested in how everyday things work and love learning about and practising experimental techniques to demonstrate this.
What the article actually says, however, is that Science as a separate subject will be dropped from Grades I and II. It is expected that the appropriate topics will be integrated into other subjects, for example, Geography, Maths, Art/Handicraft and many other subjects may be appropriate areas where scientific knowledge and principles can be introduced.
Whether this will actually happen, of course, is quite another matter! Unfortunately, it is more often than not the case that, when two subjects are combined in this way, effective education in one or both of them tends to suffer.
I am FAR more concerned that Music, Singing and Hygiene (?) - MSEP - has NO time allotted AT ALL until Grade IV and then only 20 minutes in brackets! Music and singing are extremely valuable in teaching children tangible things like breath control, self-confidence and the discipline of working as a team as well as the intangible effects of music on the body, mind and life in general. Being able to sing is equivalent in many ways to being able to smile.
Also, WHY, is it apparently thought that Grade III students apparently know all there is to know about "Civics and Culture"?

As a kid I always wanted every book and copy and pen to be abolished... and GOSH!!! look at today's kids... they carry more than their weights and lose out almost all of their childhood amidst books and studies... I would always wish the kids upto age of 5 never had to go to school and enjoy the best of their innocent days...
Anyways, on the track of the topic - there is no justified age to learn anything. In grades 1 and 2 some would find Science interesting and some would find literature more interesting and (many might never find Maths as interesting... - I say many as I was one on that segment)

Well, I do not know how it is structured the education system in the Philippines.
However, I, going back in time, if I remember correctly, in elementary school, did not study science. It was introduced when I arrived at middle school (it was the year 1987!).
Even the English language in my time in elementary school did not study, but my younger brother of 11 years, instead he had this subject already in primary schools.
What to say as a comment? Well, science suitable for elementary school children, in my opinion could be a subject of study education.
Meanwhile, then when get to the middle schools, must study it in every way!

You are correct! kids in their early age have many questions that usually science is the answer, but But as a teacher, I agree with that. In my personal opinion, grade 1 and 2 must focus on Reading and writing ( the basics) Those basic are very important to prepare the kids for more complicated one, science is good and enjoyable subject but it will be more enjoyable if the kids will able to read and understand science by themselves. If the child is completely done with the basics they are more inclined to read and will show more interest to the subject matter.
I remember the speaker in the seminar I attended that, Books are useless if the kids are not able to read it, so whats important is to master first the basic, to develop their interest to a more complicated subjects.

Hi there ! Who said so ? are they serious ? Come on like they are out of their mind. What would they wanted little kids would learn ? Science is so important because we get involved with Science everyday . Our human body is already a part of Science .
Children this era are so briliant , that to anything they see they wanted a rationale of it. They are very hungry of ideas and knowledge. So why hinder this thing to them. Let us support our little angels for they are our future scientist.
