The Harlem Shake is the latest craze among the young and old going by the number of hits. There is no end to the dance forms that get introduced and how they are picked up becoming popular overnight. I like the age old foxtrot and the waltz. Have any of you tried the Harlem Shake? What are the various dance forms that you have imbibed. Any professional dancers here? Do share your experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vJiSSAMNWw

What is spandex?

Spandex is the colorful fitted one-piece suit everyone was wearing in the video.

I think one has a choice what to wear. But if you have a good figure nothing like dancing with a spandex!

These vigorous dance forms could help one lose weight too I am sure. Have you had the occasion to watch a real group or have you done it yourself? Do the do these kind of dance forms at weddings too?

The class is forgotten at the tail end of the wedding reception. I have seen that happen here. They also do the birdie dance!

I dont think they do them at weddings allknowing. Maybe the bride and grok can do this in private. But I'm not sure about it being done in a wedding ceremony, weddings are usually classy.

I haven't viewed the video..and my dance moves are about as current as the jive! I'm from the old school, when dancing was with partners, and the two of you "cut a mean rug!" The focus was on how you danced as a pair..not your moves as a solo (amongst a pair)! Give me the Hesitation Waltz, the Polka, the Schotisse (sp)..Foxtrot and I'll dance thru the nite! NOt so, the twists and twirls, the gyrations today! And now, ringing thru my head..."slow down, you move to fast, time to make the moment last.....

Far too funny...my love of dancing, may have been the demise of my marraige...(NOT really) But, I too, chose a dance partner, that didn't want to "boogie" on the dance floor...nor waltz thru life with me. Good music, and my fingers, feet and I think even my toes are a twitter. An exhilerating feeling! Growing up, we had country dances, in community halls...each hall was built with bunk beds (manY)..all children went to Country Dances, and when Father's waltz put them to sleep in his arms...you were gently carried to a bunk bed, covered and kissed...Some of my greatest memories of childhood! A time when babysitter's were the whole community at the dance. A time when one could NOT wait to learn THE DANCE and participate...NOT wait for the legal drinking age! Different times...different aspirations!

There were/are certain communities here that have dancing in their blood such as Goans. They dance away their blues no matter when and where. Wanting to do things that were not normally done at a specific age was normal no matter where we came from. When I was little may be around 2, I would carry a bag, I believe, and say I was going to school. How old were you when you had the craving to dance and drink!

Wow! That is what I call dancing. We see none of that today. Solo is the order of the day. I remember we would just look around to see who would have the last dance with who! Here in India during my young days the number of couples who were seen on the floor were few. I have never danced in public as my husband never liked to do it in public!

After Gangnam Style....this will definitely be banging through my ears for the next several months! I wish I could dance but feel real awkward everytime. Well, not really wanting to dance ti this tune. But I have always wanted to learn how to dance the Swing. Back in High School, my group of friend and I would often join programs and have been cheerleaders our whole High school life, but I just feel so timid in front of an audience.

There is the Gangnam Style too. I don't think anyone with a weak spine will be able to do the Harlem Shake! I am totally banned from dancing after my accident anyway. You must be dancing at weddings surely?

I haven't made a harlem shake video but I do know how to do the actual harlem shake. The only reason these are called the harlem shake is because of the first 30 seconds of the song they are dancing to but the actual harlem shake is nowhere near that caliber. The harlem shake videos are just fun to watch and a bunch of my favorite youtubers have done harlem shake videos of their own.

There are countless videos on this dance form. It is nice to update on what is the latest not that I like this dance form. For me nothing like the good old graceful foxtrot and waltz. It is interesting to watch a group may be.Have you had the occasion to watch a group doing it and not just watching videos. If you say you know how to do the Harlem Shake may be you have taken part too?

I too think this dance form will not last unless they use it to exercise in order to lose weight. Youngsters get bored very easily and look around for anything that is new. There have been so many crazes. Michael Jackson I suppose was the pioneer?

I was in a dance group at my high school that had the harlem shake intergrated into a few of our dance routines; it was nothing like the youtube craze where noone is actually doing the harlem shake; its just like a fun thing to do when you get together with friends or something. I haven't partaken in this craze, its much like gangnam style and will fizzle out soon though.

That is the secret to youngsters not wanting to go for dances like the foxtrot and the waltz where every step has to go with the music beat!

I never heard of the Harlem Shake but i will listen to it on you tube. Now the gangnem style is a new dance or sort of new. I know how it's done but i cant really do it well lol. Now my niece whose 9 can do it. I don't know how new it is and it's a country dance to a country song called the Watermelon Crawl. Another dance i have done recently and is from 2007 is the Cupid Shuffle. So many different kinds of new and old dances. No i'm not a professional dancer by any means but i do like to dance.

Nothing great as far as I am concerned but today's youngsters are going gaga over it for reasons best known to them! You have introduced me to some new forms here. I never heard of them before. Is there a video you can post here?

When there are such graceful dance forms such as the foxtrot and waltz I fail to understand why such rough rides are called dance forms! Looks like they are into aerobics, fit for health seekers! Imagine someone dressed like that at wedding parties Ugh.....

Crazy. I don't like it. It can never replace the popularity of Gangnam because of the latter's powerful beat. What I saw is crazy. It has no direction and pointless.

I am with you on this. It is just their luck that it has become popular. But this dance form will not last. Or as I just said in the above box it is curiosity rather than popularity that these video clips get so many hits. I wonder if youngsters really go for it. At best it could be included in health clubs as part of the aerobics!

It looks like someone having muscle spasms. I don't understand how this is a new craze. At least you move more with gangnam style instead of trying to give yourself whip flash. This looks like a dance for people who don't know how to dance. Meh. My friend still dances like MC Hammer at times and I don't mind gangnam style at all. Dancing to that three times a day at least twice per session with a more balanced diet and I've lost 4 pounds which I should probably get back at some point before my clothes don't fit. I don't want to move from a size 5 to a size 3 again.

I thought of the same. This form of dance is ideally suited for those who are desperate to lose weight and not to be performed at parties or functions. If there is a dress code too all the more reason why this dance should not be performed for public viewing. Even the music is nothing to write home about! However the number of hits these video clips get could be more out of curiosity. Like I did!

I agree with you, I also find this harlem shake dance kind of like strange and weird. What I dont understand is where did this whole harlem shake dance came from?

I really don't know nor got idea. When I was young at age I used to danced all kind of dancing but when I reach the age of 12 to up, I lost interest on dancing but made myself busy of any kind of Martial Arts. There are times that I felt nasty to people engaged in dancing exercises. I don't know why? I prepare listening to music and enjoying Karate if not James Bond movies.

Age 12 is a pretty young age to give up on dancing! So you danced as a kid it seems to me. To make choices at an age as young as 12 surely you must have matured pretty fast. Not only do you don't dance now but you hate to see others dancing. What could have brought about this change in you?
