My doctor said to avoid using computer as it can harm baby..he also said that its effect and consequences are not confirmed yet but its sure the radiation can be harmful for the baby in formative stage (during pregnancy) in some way so why taking risk..I know their are ladies who have to work on computer more than 5-6 hrs daily and their kids are healthy and alright.I havn't found any article or confirmed information regarding this but my mom who was with me during visit is really worried now and dont want me to sit in front of computer ( and i want to do mylot).. what you say, have you ever heard or read any information regarding this or seen any complex case because of it?

Think the following is true and makes sense. Radiation is not healthy for anyone generally but it is good to understand what radiation is. High frequency emissions are everywhere so anything extreme should be avoided. A very big emitter is our sun. With all the devices we now use and are always increasing in power it is good to know that radiation drops off logarithmically which means if you are 10 inches away you have a certain dosage being applied but if you step back another 10 inches to 20 inches you now have not half the amount but one hundredth the amount. I think that is right. It means keep a safe distance. (that is why cell phones were considered a health risk because people keep them so close)

All electronic devices have the potential for leaking emissions. Microwave ovens are the worst. They try to contain it however. The power in a computer is shielded and I think it has a very low level compared to say old colour television sets and monitors but still there are greater offenders. I think it is great to show caution but perhaps also not be overly concerned. It is good you are thinking about your baby now for it shows you will be a careful mom.

Thank maurya for this discussion. I am 9 weeks pregnant and it caught my attention too. I will try to ask my OB about this. I never heard of this yet, but what I heard was the cellphone radiation can be harmful for the baby. I am a bit worried about it you know coz I am always on my celphone. I hope my baby is healthy.

In this modern life, there are many kinds of radiations. They can come from fax, microwave oven, computer, cellphone, TV and even the sun. Especially today there are also wifi, bluetooth etc. But you don't have to worry about it because these radiations are quite minor and they will not have a bad effect on us. When I was pregnant, I also used the computer quite a lot. And I can tell you there was nothing wrong with me and my baby anyway.

That comes from research done back in the 1970's. Since then they know that computers only produce non-ionising electromagnetic radiation....it's the same as getting from your television or your radio. The main concern with computers and pregnancy is if you are using a lap top and place it on your tummy. They overheat and THAT is bad for baby. Other than that all reports on miscarriage, low birth weights and birth defects in connection to using a computer are all False.

Since you are pregnant, it is better to take precaution. As the saying goes "Prevention is better than cure". In Malaysia, our television channel always inform us to try to minimise our exposure to computer and tv radiation. If you really need to do myLot, perhaps you plan in such a way that you are not exposed continuously for a long period of time.

absolutely, I avoid to sit in front of computer for so long because its also advised not to sit in one particular position for pregnant ladies, and also because i get tired and sleepy very often these days so it automatically breaks into small intervals. you know sometimes i leave a post incomplete while typing and get slept..Thankyou iriene :)

Hi Maurya! This one really caught my attention. I have not read nor heard about that issue but let me share my observation. My sister got pregnant last year (long awaited one) and her doctor advised her to rest. She stopped going to our store (family business) and just stayed home. She was hooked in playing Chefville(facebook game) and been playing for a total of 10-12 hours a day. She gave birth to a very healthy girl last Dec 8th (first child). All test was done to her baby plus weekly visit to Pedia. We do not see any effect on the baby as of this moment but we are praying there is none. My friends also got pregnant and been using computers at work but there has been no reported issues on child's health. Since this is your long awaited "blessing", I do not see anything wrong in following your doctor's advised for the sake of your baby :) Take care and drink a lot of water. Preggy ladies are very prone to Urinary Tract Infection.

I guess the concern is that if you spend hours and hours in front of the computer without a break, but then for anyone pregnant or otherwise you should always take regular breaks from using a computer, it's also your eyes that can suffer from too much exposure to the computer. Everything should be done in moderation, that doesn't mean NOT using a computer at all, but using it for small amounts of time during the day, of course if your job relies on you using the computer all day you should still be allowed to have regular breaks. I think the computer radiation problem is minimal, but not to rule out the dangers completely.

I think LED or LCD monitors are not so harmful. However, excess of everything is bad. If one sits for hours together in front of Computer screen or a laptop, its radiation may cause some harm. I think for a pregnant mother it would not be advisable to take undue risks for her baby.

Yeah, you could use the computer in breaks (if possible). Sitting for long hours in front of computer could cause strain. You are right that for your baby is more important than anything else.

The computer could somehow emit radiation. but I am not aware of how much radiation could actually cause any damage to an unborn child.

That's a bunch if bs. The radiation level for, things we use like computers are so little it hasn't affecting an unborn baby. I have two baby's and during both pregnancy I used a computer every day and have two very healthy and intelligent little babies on ,y hands. Things like that are just meant to scare you when it's not true.

Hi there ! There is a radiation even in LCD computer but very minimal but still risky for pregnant mothers. I am having business with Telecom company , then i observed that most men have problem in having kids. They are married for couple of years and still can hardly have a baby except for few who were blessed with one child but it really took long years to have that baby. I believed that has to do with the radiation in the computer hence everyday they faces it. It could never be a coincidence because its like 90 % of them experiencing it. Therefore i can say , there is really a minimal radiation in our computer.

Hi pink, yes no doubt computer have radiations and yes you are right infertility cases have increased among people who spend their most of the time on computer, infact its a proven thing that computer radiation can cause infertility, i have read it somewhere and also my doctor said this thing, he said that they dont release the actual data of infertility cases due to computer radiation because it will affect the whole work process..but no distinct harmful effects have been seen on unborn baby yet..I hope my baby will be alright..
