Dreaming and Doing Nothing

"You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present." - Looking For Alaska, John Green
Sometimes life could be so harsh on us that what keeps us going is the hope that tomorrow is another and it will all be better.
You failed the exam, and you tell yourself, "I will pass this exam next time. And I will make it on the top." Your plans and wishes for the future are too good, and inspiring but you never do anything about it to make it happen. You have big dreams but you remain to be a dreamer and not a doer of the dream. You motivate yourself to keep on going but you remain stuck because nothing is done. Everything is only happening inside your head. It's all fantasy.
My friend said, "You're not living the present anymore yet you're still afraid of doing what you want for your future
because you become hopelessly comfortable with the present. You're thinking of doing it but then you don't."
And I think there's truth in her words. We become too comfortable of dreaming, and just constantly dreaming. Is it because we don't have the confidence that these dreams can become reality? Or are we already convinced that dreams will remain as dreams? Are we already giving up our dreams because life seems not letting it happen?
I asked my friend again, "Why are they afraid to make things happen?". She said that some are afraid that after they reach their dreams they have nothing to dream of anymore. Nothing more to look forward. And that scares them because their driving force to live is pursuing their dreams. But it seems absurd to me--looking forward to a future that you won't let happen. It's a very complicated thing to comprehend but it somehow makes sense. Life becomes hard and imagining the future keeps us going, and is that already satisfying? Are we satisfied for merely survival? Is life not more than just survival? Is life more about reaching for our dreams, and serving our real purpose?
I believe that dreams should not remain as dreams. We have to work hard to make them come true. And when they do, we are always free to find and make another dream, aren't we?

Have faith... and maybe those dreams or part of those can come true for you someday. Good luck to you there...

Faith without doing anything could be very fatal. Do your best and God will do the rest. I believe in that saying. God wants us to work for our dreams and have faith in Him that He will bless and make it fruitful.

It is like saying: "the mind is willing but the flesh is weak". Dreaming to become someone important in the future and dreaming to have something should not remain just a dream but a goal that we should set in order to become a better person than we are today. It is useless to aspire such great dreams when all it can be are thoughts....

Yeah. It seems like our dream is too big for us to get up. We become so overwhelmed with the hugeness of our dream that we forget to rise and work for it. Thoughts will remains as thoughts unless put to actions, and so do with dreams. We have to work for it whether we like it or not. No one will make our dreams come true than us, ourselves. Others have their own dreams to work on. too.

Very true. Our dreams should not stop in our thoughts. We should make all things possible to make it happen. GAMe!

i think being in one's comfort zone produces that complacent character. there is just enough provision so why desire for more? that's one mindset that most of us have. why bother working hard for more?
i am glad that the notion of continually improving one's self in any aspect that he or she wishes to was passed on to my children. i think it's that goal of getting better at one's craft plus a noble purpose is more effective than purchasing a dream that would possibly provide us material things. it has to be about the purpose of why one is pursuing a dream not merely going for the 'sweet' tangibles.
nice discussion.

Hi, we must set an goal/aim and then we must try hard to reach the goal. If You sit idly and think the ways only, you will never touch the goal. Have a very nice day.

Yes, I agree. Being idle will really bring us to nowhere. If you have a dream, start working on it NOW!

Most people forget to work on their dreams. It's not enough to have them, it's not enough to plan, it is obligatory to take action.I believe that all dreamers need this kick to start acting, they need someone who would say them:wake up and do something!I have a friend who's dreaming about owning a small business, but he did nothing to make it happen.I know a girl who has design skills, but it too lazy to use her talent. What a shame.

Sometimes getting that first kick is the most difficult part. There is fear. There is laziness. And so many other excuses we make for not making that first step. Talents will really be put to waste if we are too lazy to use them. Dreaming is good but if you just simply dream and not take action, what good is that dream?

So why keep dreaming why not weak up and start working to pursue your dreams in life. Nobody can help except yourself to do it first.

i agree with you on this, you really should start with that life and follow your dreams. Words with no actions are meaningless. We can have so many dreams, we could always state what we want in life, what we want to have and what we want to be in our lives.. but if we never even manage to take the first step to make them reality - these dreams would just be meaningless.
If you do not help yourself, and you insist on waiting around for the right time, it probably won't even come, not even in a million years. Just take the first step and go from there.

In reality, taking the first step is the hardest part. But if you just take that first step, you are ready to go and chase your dreams. There are times that we can just lie around and daydream. And after that, get up, do something to fulfill those dreams. Nothing will ever happen if we just continue to daydream and just do only that. I believe in the right timing, but making it as an excuse for not doing anything is unacceptable.

Wow, I love everything that you say, and I totally agree of all the words that you uttered. Some people are really like that, they are just dreaming but not doing anything. I believe in the saying "in God's mercy, on the man's work". In life, there are so many things to look forward to, it isn't just survival, reaching for dreams and doing our purpose. Remember always who gave us this life, it is God, and we have the sole responsibility to live our life in accordance to his will. If you dreamed of something, don't be afraid, just lift it up to God and always take action. Dreams won't end, because Life is a Journey.:)

I think that is where goals come from. It might never come to fruition, but it was a lot of fun thinking about it.
