How do you utilize your home as an exercising place?

It's very costly going to the gym when you cannot maintain a routine exercise because of some works pending at your company. One thing that also hinders people from exercising and going to the gym is time. That's why I think exercising at home is most effective and time-saving. You can either buy exercising equipments at home or be creative at home. What household items do you use as substitute for exercising equipment?

My son actually has dumbells. So I sometimes make use of it. But most of the time, my work out would be cleaning the whole house as it would really make me sweat. I do the cleaning all by myself. I would sometimes be really feeling hyperactive that even if there are things that does not need cleaning or fixing, i re-do them! ahahah! weird, right?

Yup! It could be a bit expensive, too. But at least you can grab it anytime you want, right?

Yeah. I also would like to buy dumbells but the problem is that I need a variety of them because it might be too light for me when my strength improves.

That's good, working our and getting things done at the same time. cleaning doesn't make me sweat as much though but i sure hope it did. We have such a small place thats why.

I totally agree with you jvincent. I also face the same problem going to Gym. What I think is nowadays people (including me) don't have TIME & MONEY. And off-course there is reason for that. Its because life is becoming so busy these days that one cannot even think of having deep breath for a second. That's the reason i also did the same thing because i never like to compromise with my health. So i do regular basic exercises at my home like Stretching, running & light exercises. I go for jogging in the morning & do little stretch out & do basic regular exercises to be active all day & trust me it really works. One should definitely try it once at their home.

In my case, I am trying to gain muscles so I need weights. I only not need to jog and stretch, I also need to lift weights. I wonder what exercises I can do besides the one you have mentioned.

One doesn't really need to go to the gym to exercise! I might stay at home, but there are many things for me to do there that provide the exercise I need. I live on the bottom floor, so I must climb 17 steps before I can do any of these things I mention: - Throw rubbish away (paper, bottles and plastic needs to be thrown out on a daily basis). - Our laundry is also up those steps, so the washing must also be done. - Hanging clothes to dry is also up those steps. - Collecting clothes after they have dried also requires going up those same steps. - One must also go up those steps to go to the supermarket to buy milk, bread, or whatever else is needed. - The best place in our flat is the balcony outside, as the view of the bay and the sea is just fabulous, but it must be swept and cleaned with water to keep it reasonably clean. I don't really need to go to a gym really, I get enough exercise right here!

I do household chores like sweeping the floor while my speakers or ipod is on so that I can do some dance routines too.I wipe windows and climb the stairs and do it for two or three times.I walk with our dogs every morning since my dogs need extra exercise and walking too.I can't afford to buy gym or exercise equipments and do it at home I just watch what I eat and make it a point to do some household chores because you can sweat and burn calories too by doing those at a cheaper cost as well.

Yeah. It's easy for some people to have exercise because they are losing weight. Me, I need weights to gain muscles and weight. Basically, any exercise that involves movement and you sweating will make you lose weight.

I do stretching and yoga - it mostly does not need any equipment so it doesn't take up any space! I put on my favorite music and dance around too - that can work up a sweat. I come from a dance/figure skating background - and I never liked going to a gym to work out anyway - but figure skating on ice is a costly workout too (though I don't do much of that currently). So I try to do whatever I can that mimics it at home (there are off ice exercises we do to maintain jumping skills). Otherwise, running around with the kids all day can be a good workout too - ha ha.

I know stretching is important because once you are getting older, your joints tighten and will be prone to cramps. Stretch every to loosen the joints and muscles.

I actually do not have household equipments that I can substitute for gym equipments, but I think a small space in the house, a corner or a spot by the porch will do. Use an old mat or carpet for doing yoga or stretching. You can use dumbbells or water-filled plastic bottles instead when stretching for added cardio. Then we also have the jumping ropes that will also make for a good workout.

well, there is a number of ways where home is a better place for exercise. first, one protects and prevents the house from burglary and theft. second, it saves a lot of money if one exercises at home. third, one controls her/his own time while doing some routines inside the house. it only needs dedication and focus.

I am a very practical person. I always choose the economical way in every endeavor and that includes exercising. I don't spend money in the gym but I exercise regularly at home. I don't really need equipment such as those in the gym. I do jumping rope, air-boxing, jogging in place and lots of aerobics move alternately for at least 30 or 45 minutes to one hour. That way, I keep my body fit without spending any cent.

Yeah. Thanks for replying. But what I need is body building in lifting weights. I don't think I need further aerobic exercise because I am already slim. I only do basketball as my aerobic means of exercise by keeping myself perspirated.

A long time ago, when I was in high school, I utilize my books to do the exercise (instead of reading it ) I put it in my back pack, wear it, and do push up and pull up. Thick handbook of my father can be as heavy as 3 kg. Hold it and do sit-up. Wrap the book, tie it, and you can get some arm muscle exercise. Another extreme thing is roll up my carpet and I can practice weight lifting. A lot of thing we can do..

First, I need to do push ups without the weight because I need to improve my strength. Yeah. I probably get thick books and do arm exercises. Thanks.

Yes, I don't know why these gyms are so expensive. I just watch Tae Bo videos from youtube then connect it to my television. Voila! I already have an instructor. I bought 2 dumbells for my arms. I have a softdrink case and I use it for step up exercises.

Mineral water bottles can substitute as light weights. I think 1 liter is like 2.2 pounds, i know there is such weight in the gym, you can ask do mat exercises as they practically just need a flat space to be performed. You could even do it on your bed, but be careful not to let the laziness seep in. That's one of the good things about going to the gym, you get to be really serious with working out because everyone else is serious too,
• Philippines
21 Feb 13
I see. I have observed that when going to the gym you tend to be serious because you see other people being serious. At home, you can easily lose the urge to exercise. It's all about motivation.

Yeah. A lot of attractive people you can meet and make friends. But it is very costly.

I think that is what you pay for in the gym. The ambience and the environment of working out in a motivating area. there are a lot of attractive people there too.

hi jvincent I have five pound weights and three pound ones and exercise plastic rope to do all sorts of exercises with and a foot peddler to exercise my legs and feet and I can use these in my room here in Gold Crest. I do not do it as often as I probably should but for younger people its great to get these inexpensive items and use them for an exercise program right in your own home.

My brother-in-law and his wife are into exercising as well, they especially love biking. But since of course they could not go out all the time to bike, they got this stand for their bike. The bike now can be used at home for stationary biking, so good exercise for the legs too. They also got these weights you can attach to the legs for level up exercise. but i guess this still needs money lol as your question says what household item you can use.. and it got me thinking now i didn't answer your questions but i have been using a chair to aid me in exercises, sometimes here in the office i do that, there are chair exercise you can see online if you want.

Yeah. But it's really nice to own a stationary bike or bike. I am light on the calf area of my legs so I need leg exercises such as biking. Thanks for commenting.

The thing I utilize most at my house is the basketball hoop I have in my backyard. I love playing basketball and it's easy for me to get at least a half hour of exercise during the summer just shooting around. You can also exercise without any equipment by doing different calisthenic exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups, calf raises and so on. We can all run where every we live as well and I find running in the woods to be much less painful than running on cement.
• Philippines
21 Feb 13
Yeah. I am thinking also of going back to basketball because lately I haven't got much time due to my job. I know it can promote muscles buildup and they say basketball can make you taller.

Oh, you can use the chair. I use it a lot. You can do push ups with it, you can lift it, do stretches with it, and a lot, lot more. Fetching a gallon of water is also a form of exercise. My three pet dogs need 3 gallons of water everyday because we change their water 3x a day. So whenever I do this, I consider it as an exercise already.

Thanks for commenting. I can certainly use a chair as a prop in exercise.
