Needed to clean a closet out!

Full closet - now it's empty

My son and his little family live in a small apartment with very little closet space. Now that my grandson is growing so fast they don't have any space to put his old clothes and since their planning on having another child one day they want to keep most of his things. I have more closet space than one person needs and used every inch. I offered to clean out the biggest walk in closet I have which is really full of some clothes but mostly odds and ends that can be put elsewhere or even thrown out. I spent this afternoon cleaning out that closet and after throwing away what I didn't need I'm sitting here with my living room full of stuff I need to find a home for. I sent my d/i/l a message telling her the closet is empty and whenever she's ready to bring over what she needs to. How are you fixed for closet space? Do you have enough or would it be nice to have another one?

i agree with janey that it's very kind of you to offer your biggest closet for them to use. but then it's not really surprising because parents cannot not stop helping, right, especially as grandkids come along. my sister and nieces has managed to clean out a lot of stuff when we had a garage sale, but there are stuff that still needs to be sorted out here.

Don't you think I have an ulterior motive? lol.....they are going to have to come and visit me if they want to bring their things here!! I'll do anything to get them over here!

Your mother is a very smart woman. It's sad when we need to give our adult kids an incentive to visit us. I usually offer to cook him his favorite meal that his wife doesn't like and won't make for him.

that too! now that you mention it, when my mother wants my brother to come over to fix something, she mentions some treat or incentive.

Usually living in a suitcase means someone is traveling but there are some homeless people who go from relative to relative and virtually live out of their suitcase.

We have plenty of closet space in my house because i use mine and hubby's bedroom closet for my clothes and hubby uses spare bedroom and basement closets for his clothes. my closet is big enough for most mu clothes and what i cant hang up i fold and out n the shelves in there. I cleaned out my closet a couple months ago and found clothes i hadn't seen in ages or even remembered i had on the floor of the closet. It was like i found a new wardrobe lol and didn't have to go shopping for shirts like i thought i needed. So yes hubby and i have enough closet space i our house and what we cant fit in a closet we hang on a rack in the laundry room but that's not much because most everything is in closets.

I found some clothes I forgot about too. I now have a new terry cloth bathrobe that I put in there one day after putting laundry away and totally forgot about it.

I have plenty of closet space. I have a three bedroom home with three large closets. Each closet is the length of one wall in each room. They are sliding glass doors. I also have a linen closet and a pantry for foods. All this closet space for two people. When I lived with little closet space years ago what I would do is put my winter clothes in plastic containers in the summer and put them under the beds and visa versa when the winter came. That worked very good for many years.

My bedroom has a large walk in closet and I put both winter and summer clothes in it. I just use one side depending on the season.

Firstly, let me say how kind it is for you to offer your DIL closet space like that. As for us..well, we are short of storage space in general, actually. John likes to fold clothes, I like to hang mine up. Ideally, I'd love a sliding wardrobe that has a combination of both so we can keep all our stuff together, although I do have room for another wardrobe in my bedroom if I so wish. Currently, the bedroom furniture we have has been inherited from John's folks and not all of it is good! The wardrobe is more like a kids version as it doesn't look big enough for adult clothes, so that got full relatively quickly. The rest are drawers of some description. I do have a dressing table and another set of drawers in my room that I want to keep as they have plenty of room..one snag though...the chest of drawers has magazines (not dirty ones) in it. That annoys me no end as we cannot access the loft (long story) in order to put those and some video tapes in. I will have to buy some of those plastic storage boxes and stack them. It's the only thing I can think of at the moment!

It's really no big thing to clean out a closet for them. I have more closet space than I need. I actually use one of my big walk in closets with folding doors to keep my litter box in. I just keep the doors open and it's out of the way.

The house that we live in is not that big. And having 4 kids who has lots of clothes, I really have to discard some of it coz some are really tattered or some clothes just don't fit anymore. So my extended closet is my mom's house. She keeps all the good stuff so she can give it someday to someone who might need it. Most of the time she and my dad would give old clothes to children of househelps in our home in the province.

I remember when my 3 kids were small we never had enough room for anything including clothes. I had to buy one of those portable clothes things to put them in.

I also have one of those. But unfortunately, it has been full years ago. So the only thing left to do is really to give away the old clothes.

I would love a bigger closet, a nice big wardrobe would be ideal, but in my small bedroom, (you couldn't fit a double bed in) so you get the picture. I know it's strange for a guy but I have loads of clothes, and I have to hang them on the wall with hangers, which isn't ideal, I have an airing cupboard in my bedroom which is maxed out. Space is minimal, I have clothes everywhere, even my cupboards are full of clothes!

I've heard of guys hanging clothes on the wall when they don't have space. There's nothing wrong with that.

we get a lot of clothes given to us from friends so i am always cleaning out my closets and going through my clothes that i don't wear and today, an organization is coming to pick up my unwanted stuff, so that is good that i can get rid of stuff and know that it is going to do some good for someone.

I'm kinda happy that I got things put in better places. It got so I was just opening the door and throwing things in this closet because I didn't know what to do with them. It's nice to see the closet empty even if it's for just a little while.

I have 3 closets and I would still like one more. I have a lot of craft materials and art supplies, plus some Ebay items I'd like to sell someday. Then I have my sentimental items from my kids when they were little, and Christmas stuff. I also have a huge dollhouse and toys I keep for Lucy when she comes over, plus other small toys of hers. So, yes, I'd like one more closet....actually, I'd like an extra bedroom since I only have one. I'm trying to move this year and it would be just great if I could find a 2 bedroom that I can afford. That would give me all the space I would need.

yes, sometimes we just don't have enough closet space. The last apartment I lived in only had one tiny closet and it was in the living room. The good thing there though was we had basement space to store things in. I wish we had that here!

I have a big house. When we first moved in my older kids were living with us so we needed the extra space. Currently I have 4 bedrooms, a full basement (with a closet), an attic with a closet and a coat closet by the front door, a closet in the hall way where I keep the cleaning products and closets in both bathrooms. I am set for closet space. My problem is rotating things. My younger boys are ages 3 and twins that are 16 months. I am constantly changing out clothes and it gets rough trying to get the ones they have outgrown up to the closet in the attic. I just recently cleaned out my attic and found lots of things that I need to sell or give away. In my case it would be nice to have an extra pair of hands that could help me sort and situate things. :)

We could always use more closet space, but then again I think we have more then enough clothes for now. My husband and I both grew up only having a few outfits for school, so when we had kids we made sure they had tons to pick from.

I need another one :(. My closet is full and it is only a decent sized closet. But I have acquired different shoes and gears because of our travels and I cannot fit everything in it anymore. I would like another closet space that is the same size as the one that I currently have.

I know most people don't have the closet space that they need. I am lucky to have all the space I have in this small apt.

I love cleaning my closet and it makes me feel so refreshing when I see it perfectly arranged, well i have this obsession that i don't want to see messy place and ofcourse with my own stuff. Also its good to clean it and recycle some stuff like sell it on the garage sale or give it to others to lessen the clutter.

Yes, I have put bags aside....clothes to donate and junk to throw away. It's nice to see the closet finally taken care of and things put in other places.
