appendix horror..

As some of you might be aware, especially those who have me on facebook, my partner had to have her appendix removed in January of this year. That coupled with the fact my dog had pups just before Christmas, is why I have been absent lately.
The entire experience was horrific! My partner woke up with severe stomach pains, and had to be taken to hospital at 8.30am in the morning. After blood tests, scans, numerous doses of pain killers, and being attached to a drip most of the day, she was finally admitted to a ward at 4.30pm, with everyone stating she did NOT have anything wrong with her appendix but they wanted to keep her overnight anyway.
So off I went home at 5pm, to feed the dogs, see the puppies and make sure they were ok, and to pack her an overnight bag. Back up again at 6pm. It was at this point a surgeon came to see her, and the surgeon said that he thought it was her appendix, and even though the blood tests had showed no inflammation, so therefore, no appendicitis, he wanted to be sure.
He said he was going to operate, hopefully through the night if they had people available, but possibly in the morning, to check the appendix, remove it if needed, and if not, remove it anyway to see if he could see where the problem was.
By 10.30pm that night she was in surgery, and 2 hours later she was back in the ward, appendix removed. We then found out that it was actually close to bursting, and if she had had the operation in the morning, it could have burst by then!
She got out of hospital at 7.30pm the next night, after begging to come home (she doesn’t like being away from me. The first night she said in was only the 2nd night we have ever spent apart in our entire relationship)
The whole experience was insane!!
What do you think of this?

Didn't they take one of those tests? (I can't recall the exact name, but they can take pictures to see if the appendix was inflamed). Good thing the surgeon decided to go ahead with it, I also came close to my appendix bursting.
I remember it well too, it was Friday, because I made challa bread for Shabbat and I wasn't hungry. It wasn't that I was nauseous, I just wasn't hungry. The pain was not bad, it felt like it did when I had cysts on my ovaries, annoying but not extremely painful. Plus I heard that with appendicitis, that the pain gradually gets worse until it really hurts and with my low tolerance of pain, my appendix was not on my mind as to why I wasn't eating and had this pain.
Anyways, Sunday rolls around and I am still not doing well. My husband said he would have taken me to the hospital, but he really didn't say much about it, just in passing, so I thought it was not serious. Then evening came and I got to thinking...My daughter, who was in high school at the time, would not be home on Monday and my husband would be at work. The problem was, my youngest son was about 3 years old and if it wasn't for the fact that I was afraid something happened to me with only my son here and he would be alone. (No neighbors close by would be home either) So, I told my husband, about 6 that evening that maybe I should go to the hospital and it is a good thing I did.
Turns out that I was admitted at the "hour" when appendix usually burst after being infected. (I think it was like 72 hours or something) But they did an x-ray, and saw my appendix was inflamed, but all the operating rooms were full. So I was woken up at 3 AM, hours after my appendix should have been removed, to go in for the operation.
So, that is my story and I am glad your partner's story turned out good as well...:)

That's true, the problem with appendix is, "typical symptoms" are not for everyone. My husband also has a dramatic story. He went to the doctor because he thought he had bad indigestion, (or a problem with his heart since heart disease runs in the family) and no pain at all. His doctor somehow knew and told him he needs to to go the hospital right away. Sure enough, his appendix was inflamed..

good grief Carm! that story is horrific! what is it with appendix causing massive dramas? lol!
they did a blood test that showed no inflammation. they did a scam, taht showed no inflammation. an internal scan, that showed no inflammation. a urine test, that showed no inflammation, and another blood tests, that again, showed no inflammation. and the fact that she was really hungry also is a sign that it's nothing to do with your appendix apparently (which is true by your story) .. so nothing even pointed toward it!

That was really horrible. On December 13, 2012, my mom also had two surgeries. They took some stones from her gallbladder and her appendix was removed, too. Her doctor said it already burst when they had the operation. I don't want any of my family members undergo such operations. It's so heartbreaking. I hope your partner is already okay. It's hard to spend a day without our loved ones beside us in such situations.

I know, she was lucky to have me and her family round her, some poor people have to go through that alone!

Glad that the surgery went well.. hope for the fast recovery of your partner.. anyways appendicitis is really a dangerous condtion.. if the inflamed appendix burst it may spread infection throughout the abdomen... so let's all be aware of this and take care of our health..

Well, happy that she was brought to the hospital and was operated just in time...
I thought appendix happened only when you walked miles or run after meal becase this happened in one my friends he just wlaked after meal then he felt pain in the stomach and when he was brought to the hospital they had to remove his appendix,,, but in your partner's case it's different! so it can happen anytime...?

hi chicksdigscars wow at first they did not find anything was wrong and oh my were they ever wrong. Had they waited she would have not only had a ruptured appendix b ut peritonitis an infection of the insides of her body so I am glad they got it removed in time.
I had mine out many years back a d the surgeon did a poor job bo stitching and closing off bleeders so I woke with pain and was bleeding as my incison had ruptured so had to go back to surgery to have it closed up and get the bleeders stopped. So I was late for the start of my sophomore year in college.

All's well that ends well.It was a testing time, huh. I hope she is perfectly fine now, since this happened towards the end of January. I also hope that you both didn't have to spend much time (if any) apart after that.
It's a good thing your partner's appendix was removed in the nick of time. I say this because just a week ago, my hubby was visiting a friend's dad in the hospital and right next to him was a patient whose appendix had ruptured. Apparently, he was throwing up blood and stuff, and was in terrible pain. When my hubby came home, he happened to mention this to me. I didn't realize that appendicitis could get that bad and painful.
Personally, I have had to visit hospitals more often than I would like. But then, everything works out in the end.
Have a blessed life!

Yeah I didn't realise it could ever be that bad either until I read about it when my partner was in hospital. It's actually quite scary!
We only had to spend one night apart, and to be honest I wasn't home until like 3am and was with her again by lunchtime the next day so it was only like 10 hours apart haha!
aw that is bad. I'm sorry you have had to visit hospitals a lot!

I'm really glad they caught that in time. I went through the same thing years ago, they didn't know what was wrong with me and had to do exploratory surgery. Mine were twisted and they got them out in time. I wish your partner a speedy recovering and good luck with the pups.

Fortunately, you lost no time in getting her to hospital and the surgeon operated on her in time ,otherwise she would suffer from peritonitis ,if the appendix perforated. She certainly has had a hard time of it then.Hope she will soon be on her feet.

I must say that appendicitis is a horrible medical problem. My girlfriend had appendicitis just a few days ago. So she had this pain started last Sunday, initially we thought it was just a common stomachache, however the pain went more severe and by Tuesday, we went for a check at our campus clinic, she was diagnosed with appendicitis and referred to the hospital.
That Tuesday night, her surgery started around 11 30 at night and got out from the operation room by 2 am the next day. she did complaint about still having pain when she woke up in the morning. However the pain gradually reduced.
Yesterday, she was discharged and her roommate is now taking care of her as I am not allowed to enter girls dorms. I hope everything will be fine as I did found some side effects of the surgery.
