We call US the big brother

Everything is big in the US - The size of the onions in the US is almost 5 times that of what we get in India.

US is known as the big brother. Everything is big there. Coke is served in huge glasses. The Pizzas are gigantic in size. I had visited their vegetable market and was astonished to see that even vegetables are huge in size. I even picked up an onion to bring back home and show it to my folks. What contributes to the huge size of fruits and vegetables there? Could you throw some mlght? Have you found anything else that is huge in size too?

I am not sure, but maybe they do make use of some special fertilizers to make the fruits and vegetables gigantic or there are certain variants of these fruits and vegetables that can actually grow that big.

Every kind of fruit and vegetable I saw there was huge. If there are variants then they should be available in other countries too. We too have some that grow larger than the normal sizes where they use artificial fertilisers. I don't think US uses artificial fertilisers. Can you explain the logic of having giant sized pizzas!

You can see how big some Americans are. Most probably, the pizzas are made to satisfy their HUGE hunger? I am sure if I happen to go to the US, I'd be BIG myself in just a matter of a week! I love pizza!

Or is it the other way around. May be they have become that way by eating those pizzas or could it be because they are big they need big pizzas. I am confused!

I had worked on cruise ship restaurants in US, and yes you are right, they eat a lot. It's the part of culture, since not long ago (less than 200 years ago) it was mostly agricultural country, and people who work hard (physically) need to eat more than people who are less active. So tradition was formed, and kept to this days. On the other side, modern life, fast as it is, doesn't give a time to people to eat properly. So now, we have "fast food", which is cheap, easy to prepare and full of sugars and fats, which are creating some sort of addictions to them, and as result, there is obesity, diabetes, even some forms of mental disorders are connected to unhealthy food. About huge veggies and fruits, in US, there is no restriction of use GMO (genetically modified organisms), so that might be one reason, as well as excessive use of fertilizers, and growth hormones used in meat industry.

Probably the single-most truthful response here...WAY TO GO, mgzg11...you have put all in perspective. And yes, it is confirmed, fast foods do create addictions! For reference only; www.nutritionfacts.org is one of the sites that I read daily, but have to be careful of the frame of mind that I am in when I read it...as it is so depressing what GMO'ing is doing to consumptives!

I never thought of that even the cows there are huge. I could say everything is huge. Your explanation could have some logic surely.

THX pergammano for your kind comment. And you are so right about GMO and other modes of manipulation of nature (deliberate once like chem-trails, or just byproducts of our civilization). It's surely is depressing, but we should read about it, since only way to do something about it, is to learn and try to tell others about harms that it brings to us all. And all this is happening because someone wants to make some extra profit.

It's not everywhere. Yes, you can get Coke in huge glasses. And pizzas can be really big. But if you go to the market here, you really won't see huge vegetables and fruits. I mean besides watermelons which are naturally huge. My dad's favorite onions are pearl onions and they are tiny. Regular onions here are about baseball size. And you're talking bigger than that, right?

May be as you say one could find them in certain areas. I saw these onions in New Jersey - really huge. There must be small sizes too but this size which I saw was worth writing a topic on!

"Could you throw some might?" Typo OR..if not, very appropos! Living next door, I would say BIG "might and muscle!" Big Brother can be a big bully! About the fruit and veggies...not noticed! But I have REALLY noticed that HUGE portions are served by restaurants, diners and cafe's! Single portions that I think can serve TWO! ANd it is being reflected!

It's easy for you to say...living half-way round the world...maybe the $hit doesn't fly that far, but it certainly rolls down-hill! YOU didn't get to choose your neighbours...neither did I!!!!! Being little Brother/Sister...with one-tenth the population, U.S. 338 million and Canada...38 million, we FEEL the breath of Big Bro..all the time! And we are brow beaten into believing "might is right." Isn't brow beating..bullying???? The fruits and veggies are not uncommonly big, to me...and if it were JUST THOSE that were placed on the plate, the obesity problem would dissolve...BUT it's the SUPER-SIZING of servings, and indulgence, that's creating the epidemic. Heck...I have grown a 3 pound, two ounce tomato...that was simply by extreme TLC and MILK..(no artificial fertilizers)--the microbes in the milk break down the nutrition in the soil! Same as milk is a great additive to a septic tank...and a compost heap! Going on 33 years and "chemicals" of any form..have NOT EVER been applied in my soil! The antics of Big Bro' are like the annoyances of a mosquito..you have to learn to live with them!

I did not know I could learn a thing or two from you. Milk for tomatoes - never heard of it! So the US is also using milk! So you said bullying. I did not!

Where are you perga? The whole world recognises US as the big brother - neither muscle nor bullying but everything else. Look at the image I have provided. Perhaps you guys too may have stuff in such sizes.

I am not sure, may be they use special kind of fertilizers or some new kind of hybrid seeds (as i know, hybrid species of fruits and vegetables are generally huge in size) or it may be because of some new technology in their green-houses..

It could also be the weather and soil? Practically everything that grows there is larger than anything I have seen anywhere else. But what is amazing is that their servings in restaurants are also huge!
