Beware of Craigslist Scammers!

Last week my son told me he sold an old car to someone on Craigslist. As soon as he told me the guy was mailing him a check for TWICE THE AMOUNT of the car, I said "Oh No! It's a scam!" I remembered the same thing happening to my other son a couple years ago. The guy told him the check was for twice the amount and he wanted my son to mail the other half to another person. What happens is: The check is a fake. And if you send half of the money to someone, you are sending YOUR OWN MONEY. Don't EVER accept a check for twice the amount of money. After my son went to the bank and found out the check was actually a fake, he got a different offer from someone else. This guy said he could only pay through PayPal. My son did not have a PayPal account, but the guy told him he could open one in a few minutes. My son asked me if this would be safe. I thought it sounded safe, but just in case, I googled the words "Craigslist Paypal Scam." And I found a warning that some man put online. This man had tried to sell a boat on Craigslist and the scammer told him to open a PayPal account. The scammer said he put MORE than enough money in the account " by accident" And told the man that part was supposed to go to the person picking up the boat. So he asked him to send the money to the pick up guy. THESE SCAMMERS HAVE THE ABILITY TO SEND EMAILS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY ARE REALLY FROM PAYPAL! The fake PayPal email tells you that the person really deposited money into your PayPal account and that it is safe to send some back. My son thought that his case was different. He said this guy actually called him on the phone and he sounded really nice. My son wanted to trust him. So he opened a PayPal account like the scammer suggested. I asked my son to promise me that he will call it off if the guy pulls the next trick and says he put too much money in PayPal by accident. Sure enough, the next day, the guy said he accidentally put too much money in my sons PayPal account and he wanted my son to send some to the pick up person. The scammer even sent my son the fake email from PayPal that looked real. My son even got a text message on his phone that said it was from Paypal and it said it was ok for him to send funds through western union to the scammer! Meanwhile, there was never ANY money put into my son's paypal account! I am warning anyone who reads this that if you're going to sell anything on Craigslist, make sure you state that you ONLY accept cash in person. No exceptions!

Some people must still be falling for it if it's been going on so long. It made me so mad. When my son texted the guy and called him a scammer and a liar, the guy wrote back and said "Please don't call me those names. I work hard in construction work and I hate scammers and liars." Imagine that! Trying to make my son feel sorry for him! Some of my friends told me when they were trying to purchase a car on Craigslist, there were fake listings for cars that don't even exist! They list really nice cars at good prices and tell people to hurry and be the first to send the money, but there is no car. There sure are some awful people out there!

true, be glad he was told by you. Or maybe he would have been a victim as well. Glad you warned him....

I really hate these crooks and hope they get caught at it. I've gotten this screen as well and it does look real like it is from paypal except in the address bar at the top of the screen it does not say pay pal. I'm glad your son didn't loose money on this guy.

I know, It's a good thing my son didn't have any extra money. (That's one good thing about being poor, lol!) My son had no way of sending any money back to the guy if he didn't receive any from him. I feel bad for the rich people who might be able to send money back right away before realizing it's a scam:(

Though i hate being poor, but it's good thing he didn't have money to send that time although i would still prefer to be rich and still have lots of money left even after i got fooled of my money by other people

I posted about it and then I had a person email me with a question about something I said and when I asked on the email back he told me he had lost four thousand dollars.

Hey thanks momalisa. For people like us who do internet transactions, the increased craigslist activity can be a threat. Everyone should be careful.

Wow this is crazy that people are coming up with new and more new scams to scam people out of their money. I have been very wary to do anything any more on craigslist. Cause that place is full of nothing but a lot of scammers trying to scam people out of their money. Even for a job. I'm glad that your son listened to you though, and did not follow through with sending the other money to the other person. And I think that your advice is good that you only accept cash and nothing else. I wouldn't accept anything else either but cash. These scammers are starting to get out of hand.

Your son should be so thankful he has a mom like you on top of all of this stuff. It makes me sick how people have to ruin everything by their scams. I used to love craigslist but it seems no matter what I do on it these days I find it to be a scam. Heck did you know that you can be a personal assistant and get great money you just need to accept the check being sent to you and pay some things for them to start. It is crazy how they play that scam off and there are tons of them doing it too. I always hope that others don't fall for it. I guess I wonder actually how many do. I would think there should be a way to trace these things so they could stop it. I hadn't heard of the too much money in your paypal account scam so thanks for the heads up. I would only take cash from anyone I sold something to on craigslist and I would have to meet them face to face as well. I haven't bid on anything in a long time on ebay but I wonder if they are getting any of these scams as well. I wish your son the best of luck in selling his car and good job mom for helping him not make a huge mistake.
